As for how it stacks up against human podcasts? “I think that people who are still referring to all AI-generated content as AI slop are probably lazy luddites. Because there’s a lot of really good stuff out there,” Wright said.

I think that people who are impressed by AI slop are the dullest fucking idiots out there, go fuck yourself shithead

[-] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 49 points 4 months ago

the luddites were right though erm-this-you

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 33 points 4 months ago

most people don't know that the Luddites were making a pre-Marxist critique of early capitalism and assume they were just religiously motivated or something like that.

[-] Doubledee@hexbear.net 27 points 4 months ago

Between this and Teslas (lotta overlap on the Venn diagram there tho) it's really great to have these handy signals that you're dealing with a person you will want absolutely nothing more to do with.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 17 points 4 months ago

But also her example isn't even an example. It's just "sort through the shit pile until you finds diamonds. They're probably in there." She doesn't even listen to this crap herself, she knows it is crap, she just thinks the general public will fall for it.

Maybe they'll invent an AI that grades AI slop and filters out everything but the "good" episodes.

[-] piccolo@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

Currently there's a benchmark for creative writing where samples are produced by various AIs and then graded by one particular "judge" AI, so I'm sure they're working on this

"We're trying to make money in the laziest manner possible while also expediting a mass extinction event by consuming excessive amounts of energy, and fuck you for saying anything about it"

[-] LeZero@hexbear.net 8 points 4 months ago

I wonder how many of those good stuff podcast she listens to

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 68 points 4 months ago

Her calling people turned off by AI slop “lazy” is hilarious considering how she wants to mass produce content in the laziest way imaginable.

"I'm not lazy, I'm not lazy!" I insist as I instruct 3000 chatbots to reply to the haters for me

[-] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 30 points 4 months ago

Shes pre-empting the most obvious criticism.

[-] Chana@hexbear.net 28 points 4 months ago

Listen here, loser. It's hard work listening to these AI podcasts.

Hi! I'm BobCast Bob! Oh! I mean PodCast Bob! Dontcha hate it when you make a goof? Remember that the aiPeople Act of 2027 means that in effect that we - aiPeople - are people too! Anyways - I'm here - bad pun intended(!) - to remind you not to make defamatory statements about me or any of us on social media. You don't want us suing you, winning, getting a ginormous settlement you can never pay off, garnishing your wages for the rest of your natural born life, and turning the entire thing into weekly pods. Do ya?

Google Mitch Yabai if you don't believe me. Mr. Yabai is 29 years old. We sued him and won. He lost his job, his housing, and his car. His marriage seems rocky too. According to our best estimates - he'll be paying us for the next 61 years if he manages to live that long and not die from stress. The poor guy could have avoided all of that had he kept his big trap shut. But he had to go hurtful. And we got weekly content about his trials and tribulations forever.

To be absolutely safe - it's best to keep your piehole closed always on and off the net - everywhere basically - if you're gonna be negative about us. We got better intel than Santa. Privacy is dead and we know everything.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

Google Mitch Yabai if you don't believe me.

I believe you mean "Use Google's handy dandy AI bot to learn about him" there partner. We wouldn't want any misunderstandings about people thinking they shouldn't use a friendly and helpful companion who will give them the information they seek, would we?

"Some of these AI-generated podcasts, engineered to target the young 'dirtbag left', include shows with titles such as "TrueAnon", "Citations Needed", "RevLeft", and "Chapo Trap House"."

In-app podcast discovery lists were already worthless, so filling them up with garbage isn't going to hurt much.

I know some guy is going to get all their news by asking a computer to summarize the latest news and repackage it as a podcast on his commute. But I wasn't inviting that guy to my parties anyway.

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 26 points 4 months ago

filling them up with garbage isn't going to hurt much.

Imagine 1,000,000 mini Joe Rogans ceaselessly pumping unlimited bespoke brain poison into the minds of millions (if not 10s of millions) of Americans. Seems bad.

[-] LangleyDominos@hexbear.net 18 points 4 months ago

Flood the market with slop, make it harder for people to find real podcasts. People will eventually give up and just click on slop (so they think). They're trying to corner the market through attrition.

[-] prole@hexbear.net 35 points 4 months ago

“I think that people who are still referring to all AI-generated content as AI slop are probably lazy luddites."

Yeah, those people who want humans to make their own content instead of using the fancy autocomplete bot to do it for them are the lazy ones

[-] Ishmael@hexbear.net 33 points 4 months ago

"weather reports for various geographic areas or simple biographies" They somehow found a lower level than "YouTuber reads wikipedia"

[-] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 32 points 4 months ago

The episodes themselves are built using AI, powered by 184 custom AI agents, or autonomous software tools, who work with several large language models, including OpenAI, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and more to build out the content. The podcast voices for the AI hosts are being customized and designed by the team.

Sweet, can't wait for 3000 exactly 30 minutes long podcasts that sound like a generic long-form autogenerated email every week.

[-] LangleyDominos@hexbear.net 19 points 4 months ago

Strivers eyeballing that sweet paetron money they've been missing out on to Chapo and Cumtown. They want to capture that value by making up a horrible plan to capture that value and then selling that plan to investors.

The company produces different levels of podcasts. The lowest level involves weather reports for various geographic areas or simple biographies and higher levels involving subject-area podcasts hosted by one of about 50 AI personalities they’ve created, including food expert Claire Delish, gardener and nature expert Nigel Thistledown and Oly Bennet, who covers off-beat sports.

[...]

Wright says she could eventually imagine having hosts chat with listeners, or sing “Happy Birthday” to them, but there’s wariness about diving in too deep. “I am not going to create a personality that somebody has a deep relationship with,” said William Corbin, co-founder and CTO of the company. He added that the company does not do hard news at this point, but Wright says they might in the future.

[...]

They also have a plan to work with existing creators to help them scale their output. “I think it exists alongside it, and it can delve into areas where human hosts might not want to go that deep,” said Josh Taylor, co-founder and chief production officer.

Honestly if it encourages big companies to drop Joe Rogan and the like and replace them with AI that would be pretty funny because he commands a lot of money so obviously it would be preferable to replace him with something cheaper even if it has to be a dozen somethings.

Also the only group of people I could see this consistently working on would be reactionaries who just want to be spoon-fed rage bait and the same repetitious nonsense over and over again. You could probably make a bunch of reactionary political podcasts and get a ton of boomers and such subscribing to and paying for them. Might need to pay Twitter to license raw input content for the right amount of reactionary stuff but it seems totally doable. They all talk about the same thing and you could just have your hosts invent things to be outraged about and that would work too.

CEO of AI slop should stfu

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I mean, there's already way too much slop to sift through on the Internet, so this won't change much for me. I've pretty much cut every single algorithm out of my life because just my "subscribed" page is more than I could ever want to listen to/watch.

But for people who don't have a list they've curated for themselves, this will make things suck worse.

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

Nigel Thistledown

calling it now they wanted to name this character Nigel Thornberry but then they got told that that name was already copyrighted.
