Alphanumerical lists are sortable by alphabet and number, obviously, but if you have a list where each entry begins with a different punctuation mark (or any other kind of non-alphanumeric character), is there a similar standardised ordering method for them?

I imagine, for example, that a comma will come before whatever this is: ¦

I just tested an A-Z sort in Google Sheets where each cell was a different punctuation mark, and it seemed to rearrange what I'd entered into some sort of order, but is this order shared universally? Is there a global Unicode-compliant ordering method everyone uses?

Cheers!

I have old Facebook and Twitter accounts, maybe some others. I'm old so there's a MySpace account out there. But I've mostly been using reddit the last decade or so, and have migrated to Lemmy. Now, Lemmy is the only social media i use. Recent news got me thinking about this question.

I, am trying to understand if I have habits. My definition of a habit is: "Something that you do often and regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing it" from the Harvard Dictionary

And It might look weird written here, but, I am not certain I have Habits. The most classic example is "Brush your teeth every night and morning", but I don't see myself naturally going to do it and most of the time I forget this and can't seem to do it everytime a lot. So I can't take that as an example of a Habit.

I eat everyday. But I don't naturally go unconsciously eat every day. I forget every morning to eat, which makes me hungry at 12h, and at night I go est because I feel in my belly I need food, or because my Girlfriend is angry I didn't eat yet very late because she asks me almost daily.

Hell I adore coffe, but in the morning I can just fully not think about doing a coffee. And I do take a coffee almost daily but because I think about all my pack of coffees that I putted behind my monitor with my grinder. It's not a "natural thing I go do"? Because I can forget it if there is no joy stimuli for a coffee.

Ok last thing. I try to go swimming, but it's because my girlfriend reminds me I really wanted to delete my belly, or because I think about my ideal me being more in shape and less tired everyday (which I've seen results on that part before stopping for no reason 2 weeks). When I go to the swimming pool, I put my stuff in the same area of Lockers, not always the same but the same area because I won't forget. And I then go put my towel near the exit of the pool to dry myself when getting out of the water. Are those two things habits, or are those things logical choices that make sense in the current situation and I am overthinking this?

This is the longest question ever, but yeah, what's a Habit I think, I've been running the question in my head for a few weeks now

I read there were genetically modified mosquitoes that only bred males. Is that commercially available? What about that laser that zapped roaches, has it been improved to zap mosquitoes too? Maybe there is a guide somewhere on how to build a DIY Anti Mosquitoes Air Defense System?

Say there's a forest, but there's a small cleared area where a family can build a place to live. What's the geographical term for that?

Edit: The word I was looking for was a clearing. A glen was suggested as well, but that is a space between rolling hills, while the space I was thinking of was on flat land.

Thank you everyone!

example: a drug addict alcoholic who discovers god and turns a teetotaler gay bashing abortion hating new born Christian.

Is replacing addictions the rule or the exception?

I don't think lemmy has an equivalent /r/suggestalaptop community, but feel free to let me know if any.

I really like my acer Chromebook c720 because its easy to carry around and doesn't feel heavy when placed on my lap. Google no longer supports this model, so i turned it into a Linux machine via Arch Linux and Sway as the WM. This setup really fits my needs. However, it is underpowered with only 2G and old cpu. There is another model (4G + i3), but i cant find it anywhere in my area.

Is there a laptop you can suggest that has very similar dimensions, but higher specs (up to 8G ram if possible) and has good compatibility with Linux? I use my c720 for almost all stuff - watching movies, studying some web dev stuff, etc. but not gaming. I'm not really asking for any links on where to find them, but just a suggestion. Already tried 14-15in laptops, but i would still prefer around 11-12 (maybe because of small hands?).

I know the real answer is reddit but I really don't want to go back now that I've already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn't. I can see how this place is wonderful for the certain type of person but that person is not me. My experience during the past 6+ months has been a net negative and I'm pretty much ready to move on. I just don't know where else to go.

I'm bored of reading how Linux is better than windows, how matrix is better than discord, how foss is better than proprietary etc etc. I didn't even mind but it's always the same things everyone says... so anyway I want to hide comments that mention those words I already did it for posts but can't find an option for comments specifically (I'm using boost for lemmy, yeah yeah I know but I'm used to it I always used boost when I was on reddit and I feel right at home with it.) any suggestions?

Every time I see an ancient text translated, it always sounds like it was spoken by a classy Englishman from the 1800s. Is there a reason it's translated that way instead of modern English?

I swear to god, more and more I keep having 'clean' versions play on Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer - despite the song being marked as 'Explicit'.

And no, I definitely do not have the setting checked for only playing clean versions.

It's not just me - is it?

I'm missing something here. Admittedly, I'm making the assumption that blowing up hospitals is a bad thing to do.

M49, I tend to go a bit long between haircuts which is on me, but I seem to have a really hard time explaining that I want short hair, like 20mm / 3/4"

I usually ask for a #2 clipper on the back and sides, (which works fine), then take as much as they off the top so I can still brush it straight up, preferably too short to grab onto.

Basically a cigar butt with eyes, shut up it works for me.

Even indicating with thumb and finger, this somehow gets interpreted as just barely trimming the tips off and painstakingly shaping the surface, barely affecting the overall quantity of hair.

How's that for length?

What no, get in there with fire and the sword, wreak devastation, I want all of this gone.

:carefully trims another quarter inch off:

It's not just one guy, not just one place, so I am obviously using wrong and misleading words.

How do I ask for the thing I want?

You wouldn't start off an e-mail with "My Dear X", or "Dearest X", since that would be too personal for a professional email, so "To X" being more impersonal seems like it would make the letter more professional-sounding, compared to "Dear X".

I get pretty easy depressed watching TV shows with a depressing tone or a lot of character deaths or that. If its more in the background its generally fine, but things like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Boys are a lot for the moment. How does the new Fallout show compare?

Tried to research this but it only told me how to create one, not view it.

My problem is that anytime there is a long image, namely a scrolling screenshot, it is blurry and unreadable when I try to view it. This includes when I just zoom in as well as when I save the image to my own photos and try to view it from there.

So how am I supposed to do it? These (seemingly) aren't low quality images because it happens every time - on here, text messages, search results - and no one else ever says anything about it.

There are no issues viewing other types of images and my phone is updated.

Also, I'm on Android.

During the great migration, the trending communities was showing the latest being created. Nowadays, it seems to be a mix of new communities, and empty old communities.

I am not really sure how it's really working ? Does someone know ?

Used a couple of US recipes recently and most of the ingredients are in cups, or spoons, not by weight. This is a nightmare to convert. Do Americans not own scales or something? What's the reason for measuring everything by volume?
