Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

This dummy doesn't even have demands. Hopefully the rest of the continent holds out and demonstrates to the US its dependency on its neighbors.

Looks like you nerds are going to have to start giving my posts 25% more upbears starting this saturday

a-little-trolling

[–] [email protected] 56 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You have to pay those tariffs when you get the upbears, so you are actually going 25% down on your upbears.

I will be visiting from another instance to deliver one downbear for every 4 upbears I give

ICE raids causing farm workers to stay home, bird flu decimating egg production and tariffs on Mexico (around 50% of US fruit & veg imports)...

[–] [email protected] 63 points 2 months ago

A bunch of Chinese stuff gets sent to Mexico and then into the US, right? This could be a pretty massive, universal price hike

Let's watch for the bluffs and double bluffs.

But honestly, if The Agency hasn't planned all this out in advance and given him the playbook, he might not survive their discipline.

Let's hope he really goes to war with the intelligence services and they mortally wound each other

Will Trump actually be allowed to destroy NAFTA?

I know the people around him just want to do a smash and grab for themselves, but that's a small circle of people, and the USA is a very large country.

It's a genuine test of where power really lays. The state is not a literal puppet of some embodiment of the capitalist class as a whole - it's an incredibly powerful tool that factions within the class vie for control of to pursue their particular interests.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Comparing Trump to Louis Bonaparte sometimes feels lazy, but eventually he was able to get away with stuff and wasn’t strictly a tool of class warfare.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 months ago

I guess the trots are on something with the term "Bonapartism" it seems very, useful now.

I am so fucking blessed we have an avocado tree overhanging our patio. Gonna have to make sure to harvest it well and distribute it this year

[–] [email protected] 66 points 2 months ago (2 children)

All my avocados mysteriously transform into bananas at the self checkout. They revert back into avocados when I get home, thankfully

nooo, don't tarriff my drugs

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Don't be silly, the CIA would kill him if he actually fucked with the drugs

[–] [email protected] 50 points 2 months ago

I hope that old guy in my college physics class from like 7 years that just randomly started talking about how we should fund the government through tariffs like we did 110 years ago is happy. Those guys think the rest of the world pays for the US's existence and also cant comprehend the fact a modern state can't sustain itself on tariffs.

maple syrup is already expensive enough man come on 😞😞

whats his reason for canada? i get he hates mexicans but didn’t tredau or however it’s spelled step down and now they have a jd vance type dude up there?

[–] [email protected] 37 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Trudeau stepped down, but because they have a parliamentary system there are no elections yet, it's just an internal election in the Liberal party. Chrystia Freeland, everybody's favorite nazi supporter, is one of the frontrunners.

The "reasoning" is that people illegally immigrate here from Canada, which may have come to Trump in a dream.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 months ago

that’s hilarious. i bet if any “illegal immigrants” are here from canada 100% of them live in NYC or LA and they’re just trying to be influencers.

i can’t think of any other reason someone might illegally come here from canada. we have all the same problems but worse and then no healthcare

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 months ago

Freeland's polling is in the shitter with the prospect of a Mark Carney leadership. He's some charismatic economist ghoul. Also the federal election campaign will almost certainly begin as soon as Parliament is back in session in about a month or so.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 2 months ago (3 children)

The “reason” is Trump is using tariffs as a negotiating tactic. The US has a lot of leverage on the rest of the world; it’s just never used because destroying your soft power is a bad long term strategy. Trump thinks either Canada will accept tariffs and thus get a bunch of free money from Canada, or that the tariffs will cause Canada to give up “something” in renegotiating trade terms.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 months ago

or that the tariffs will cause Canada to give up “something” in renegotiating trade terms.

The American dairy industry has been salivating at having access to Canada for decades. They've been successfully kept out so far because domestic farmers want to maintain higher prices and because everyone else wants some basic quality control in dairy products.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago

or that the tariffs will cause Canada to give up “something”

We're all kind of nervously laughing up here when the Burger Reichers keep saying "51st state"

You're joking, right? It's a joke? anakin-padme-2

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Trump thinks either Canada will accept tariffs and thus get a bunch of free money from Canada

Wait what?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

That’s what Trump thinks, not what reality is.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He hasn't actually left office yet and they'll be picking a new person from the same party so probably not much different. I think it's happening in March?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

what was his reason for stepping down? is he really that horrible and unpopular? i dont know too much about his policies but i just see him as a typical fake woke neoliberal type of dude based on what little i’ve heard about him. all i really ever hear is stories about how boomers are pissed off at him for saying there are genders or something

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There's two reasons, the first is that i think Canadians are a lot more sensitive to the cost of living increases due to generally lower wages and higher rents. He basically has done fuck all to hold grocery stores accountable for greedy price increases or to alleviate their impacts because why the fuck would he? He also has basically twiddled his thumbs to solve the housing crisis. To be fair, the provinces have a lot more ability to solve this. The second reason is he's been PM for over 9 years now. Any politician accumulates baggage in public perception. Basically, people are just tired of him.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

thats insane bro was in power for 9 years and just steps down lol. youd figure at that point someone might just try and seize absolute power
