"Hey Weird Al, you know that new sound you were lookin for? Well listen to this!"

[-] [email protected] 39 points 9 months ago

The Weird Al version of "American Pie" is the only good version. the-more-you-know

[-] [email protected] 33 points 9 months ago

The best part about that is he didn't even watch the movie, he just used a plot summary from somebody else and wrote the new lyrics. Hilariously nailing all the major plot points.

Holy shit I never knew that! LOL.

twice divorced and domestic abusing 73 year old boomer [with a 24 year old girlfriend] most famous for writing a eulogy about the "innocence" of the 1950s in the 1970s has Phase IV (Profound Lead Toxicity) rated political takes.

i am shocked.

writing a eulogy about the "innocence"

Creeps like that get off to killing "innocence" over and over again as their personal nonconsenting fetish. epsteingelion

Things just haven't been the same since the Big Bopper died.

[-] [email protected] 71 points 9 months ago

That is a top 5 most horrible song to realize to be entirely unironic

[-] [email protected] 23 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Also anything from Marty Robbins that isn't about old west rooting tooting

[-] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago
[-] [email protected] 21 points 9 months ago

If you like the rooting tooting western aspect, may I suggest Cisco Houston? He was a folk singer and Wobbly troubadour from the depression era who sang a bunch of the old cowboy tunes

[-] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago

Nah, not my thing. What I like about these guys is the voice. The lyrics are just silly.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

Ok fair, but Cisco has the most buttery smooth voice around! Not trying to convince you to like something you don't, just have to go to bat for the guy

[-] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago

I mean, he sounds like Woody Guthrie or Pete Seger. Not terrible, but not my first pick.

"Being a bigoted piece of shit will totally bring back the good old days where boomer rock stars got to prey on teenage girls and get celebrated for it. The boomers are older than ever, but the creeping targets must remain the same age." grillman libertarian-alert

This song confused me as a kid so I asked my dad what is was about, he explained who the people in the crash were. But 9/11 had just happened and I was just like oh that's basically nothing compared to that and he had to admit that was true.

Anyways, death to America

[-] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago

I also don't know what it's about and know maybe 10% of the words. What crash?

[-] [email protected] 24 points 9 months ago

NATOpedia

idk, I think this was a big deal for boomers or something, I know who Big Bopper was because of a joke on Futurama and Buddy Holly because of the Weezer song that was included with Windows 95 shrug-outta-hecks

I thought that song was about a plane crash bruh

[-] [email protected] 22 points 9 months ago

Yeah not sure what it has to do with "wokism"

[-] [email protected] 33 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I think he's saying the whole song is meant as a criticism of the 60s counterculture and mourning the end of 50s America, and today's "wokism" is just an extension of the various sixties movements. He's nostalgic about driving his truck down to the sock hop with a pink carnation in his suit and then going down to drink with the "good ol' boys" at the levee. Now Lenin (Lennon) is reading Marx and everything is just too damn political! He directly calls out a bunch of the classic 60s counterculture songs.

[-] [email protected] 24 points 9 months ago

"good ol' boys"

Note: don't ask how good they were to black people

[-] [email protected] 27 points 9 months ago

I guess he has to try to pretend like the song is deeper than it really is, because otherwise he's gotta admit to himself that there are about three generations alive today who couldn't care less about The Day The Music Died.

I never liked that song and I hated the 90s brobro asshole movie of the same name even more.

EDIT: The Weird Al Phantom Menace parody pretty legit, though.

[-] [email protected] 27 points 9 months ago

"the day the music died" aka 9/11 for cracker music

Don Mclean failed to account fo-

"And while Lenin read a book on Marx

The quartet practiced in the park

And we sang dirges in the dark

The day the music died"

Can't unsee. agony

[-] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago

I'm kinda shocked this guy's still alive.

Honestly, I learned about this song because of the Madonna cover like 25 years ago, and had no idea what it was about.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago

American Pie is one of those songs that would make me walk off to do odd tasks or take a bathroom break at work should it have popped up on the radio.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

Who is this loser and why is he taking credit for a song that Madonna orginally wrote for the millennium to go with that one with all the green lasers? soviet-huff
