To be fair this is just the opinion of some random crank

Dr Linda Parker, one of the UK’s leading military historians, says…

However I actually think it would be a good answer to the social care crisis - if grandmas is in the infantry at least you know she’s getting three square meals a day and keeping her bed sheets changed regularly. Sure she might have to push a trench in a storm group or dig a foxhole but don’t they say that physical exercise is good for bone density and preventing muscular wastage in old age?

Wow, someone in the army saw re-runs of Dad's Army on BBC1 and thought it was a good idea.

It went really well the last time a Volkssturm fought the Russians

They finally did huh, with every other government service already cut they actually have gone after the military.

The final citadel to be replaced with people from the town.

It’s the biggest difference between the US and UK, the UK is so committed to austerity they even defund the cops and the military.

As Riley on Trashfuture has said, they’re fully committed to winding down the British State as a going concern.

By opening up recruitment to pensioners, the Army’s size could be increased by more than 7,700 per cent, she says

Wtf lol that's like half milion old people suddenly enli... wait a minute this makes sense, if they plan to completely cut off healthcare and pensions, which i'm sure they are thinking about.

Ukrainian platoon commander: "You - British cannon fodder morons. Run forward and try to take that ridge. You're gonna die but at least it's gonna be funny."

The elderly Brits have no idea what he said because - as usual - he was speaking in Ukrainian. They look to a seemingly kindly Ukrainian chap who knows some English. "He said 'Take that ridge. It is risk but he thinks you can do.' "

There are smiles all around and the those-about-to-die pensioners start to move forward.

tbh wouldnt mind seeing a lot of the reactionary olds in this country have to go stand up for their "principles" in a meaningful way. would be a lot better than letting them sit in their massive houses whining about young people and making things worse for everyone, while middle aged and older Ukrainian men are forced at gunpoint to march into certain death on behalf of our government

Nothing breaks the facade of “muh individual liberty” quite like hearing what the porks want from poor people.

Literally salivating about sending elderly in a war like they’re goddamn Pokémon.

It took Nazi Germany years of kinetic denazification to reach the level of military degradation the UK has inflicted on itself with neoliberalism

[-] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

anyone stupid and evil enough to sign up for the military of br*tain, of all countries, should be allowed to do so, so as to purge them from this earth

[-] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

Aren't there upper boundaries on a soldier's age (per rank)? How would this even work in this case?

[-] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

It just for back lines operations, clerks and all that.

come on

At least cap it at retirement age. I guess I could entertain the concept of raising it to retirement age, at 66. But 80- or 90-year-olds?

england-cool

This is related to the story about the UK doing more cyberattacks against Russia and China. A bunch of mummified English hams trying to get Vlad to pay their taxes in Tesco gift cards

Sorry nan I can't care for you because I can barely afford my flat... Of course there's no social services any more so no carers are available. Have you considered joining the RAF? Come on Nan your only 83 that's young these days!

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army.

The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce―and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity's resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force. Everybody knows that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don't want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You'll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You'll serve two years at the front. And if you survive, you'll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets.

John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine―and what he will become is far stranger.

I only know about this sci fi book series because a conservative lib retiree guy talked to me about it one time at a social gathering.

Good series of books. Not very leftist. Loses steam a few books in. Decent slop reading if you like sci-fi.
