This is quite possibly the least cool thing to ever exist

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 29 points 1 week ago

I can't get over the fact it's the airforce like shouldn't it be something AIR related? Why a sword for the airforce? It's an extremely ground-based weapon.

[-] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 26 points 1 week ago

Yeah, everyone knows pegasus knights use lances.

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

This is the ceremony to mark the class promotion, unlocking swords and staves.

Back in Nineteen Dickety-Two, the US tried to assassinate the Kaiser by dropping a comically large sword on him from a biplane. It landed on a nearby civilian zeppelin factory a mere 200 kilometers away, and the sparks caused by the sword scraping against metal ignited the hydrogen in the factory and killed 300 people, including 40 school children visiting on a school trip and dozens of paramedics. This was considered a huge success and became the doctrine for the US Air Force for the next hundred years.

Airmen are Flying Knights?

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

Swords are elementally air in occult stuff, associated with breathing and thinking.

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 40 points 1 week ago

Mom, I wish you were there! I got to carry the BIG SWORD!

[-] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Couldn't they put at least some creativity into this? It just looks like a generic sword.

This is what I came up with in 2 minutes: Sword Design Sketch

Someone should make communist sword design next.

Meanwhile in Korea:

Kim Jong Un passing a chrome skin weapon to a comrade

Yeah, the picture is a bit blurry, but you can also see they've put engravings on it too not just the shine. I don't know if there's any photos avaiable that'd allow closer inspection of the craftsmanship.

I imagine it's a less durable finish (and more work) than the usual gunmetal grey but it sure looks cool.

General Looney

Nepo baby, Buggs and Daffy's affair child: check. Invincible outside of The Dip from Who Framed Roger Rabbit: check. Got a cushy job lined up at ACME: Check.

The sword genuinely looks like it could be the art for a 2-bit equip spell from old Yugioh

Remember this was an actual marine recruitment ad.

Probably one of those parodied by the simpsons here.

Oh lmao I thought it was gonna be the one where a boot fights a lava monster

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago

Marine ads can be so weird. A great touch is the music. It sounds like the intro theme to the world's worst sports show.

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

Ok anyone who joined the marines after seeing that has no defense.

I never saw that before. How strange. I know when I think of jarheads the first thing that comes to mind is... chess?

[-] deforestgump@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

Someone in the video comments pointed out that Marine at the end of the commercial is currently a US Representative in the House

So. wait. This thing can either be an award given to some unit, or it can be the airforce buying itself a sword because they think they did well. And the sword design isn't even standardised so half of them are some fucking anime bullshit

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

We talk a lot about how Reddit is full of air force personnel but not enough about how this means that the air force is full of redditors.

[-] TheBroodian@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

Looks straight out of Thunder Cats

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

I would request they make mine look like the buster sword from FF7

Best they can do is Frostmourne, but vaguely racist for some reason

[-] SchillMenaker@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

At least they could make the argument that the sword was used by Cloud

[-] The_Walkening@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago

Lol it's just a fancy "world's best boss" mug. Recipients are selected by the enlisted members of the Air Force and all the winners have been officers.

[-] orlando@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago

does the blade wobble as they walk?

[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago

If it does it has to make a loud weeeeoooo wooooeee metal wobble noise like the Foley artists used to use for Sci Fi noises

What is this, a rerun of Lost in Space? Weeeooooo oh no it’s just cadet Theodore trying to carry the Airplane Knife

[-] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Does your sword hang low does it wobble to and fro

[-] kristina@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

Why isn't it a cool gunsword instead of a plastic Cloud Strife knockoff

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago

Because this one is referencing Cecil's dark knight sword from FF4. It is recognizing the accomplishment of an airship captain releasing bombs on a village full of children.

[-] Nacarbac@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

Kinda surprised that Hegseth hasn't demanded one.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

give 'em one of those bicycle size-pulse jets instead

[-] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Are they spending that trillion on making a real life Gundam?

Nm it's just a fancy lumbar support mod for their chair.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

That is some peak mall ninja shit right there.

[-] Ildsaye@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago
[-] mrfugu@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

in my communist utopia the fighter jets come standard with a laser sword arm

[-] MeetMeAtTheMovies@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

Is this Thirsting Blade Dark Excalibur Mega-Genesis?

[-] BobDole@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

I thought it was goofy how the navy uses sabres and cutlasses in ceremonies, but at least those are historical weapons actually used by them at some point.

You know what? Those evangelical nerds in the air force deserve this
