Pro-Israeli Republican lawmaker Mike Rogers has reportedly asked the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel lobby group, not to campaign on his behalf, fearing voters turning against him.
Axios report on Saturday said the US Senate nominee told AIPAC not to run advertisements in support of Rogers against his Democratic rival Abdul El-Sayed.
According to an earlier report, the pro-Israel lobbyists are considering spending millions on propaganda supporting Rogers against El-Sayed in Michigan’s Senate race.
AIPAC wields significant influence in congressional and statewide races, spending tens of millions of dollars to boost the votes of pro-Israeli candidates.
Rogers himself is a strong supporter of the Israeli regime and has been endorsed by US President Donald Trump.
His rival in the upcoming elections, El-Sayed, is an anti-Israeli Democrat.
El-Sayed won the primary against his Democratic rival Haley Stevens earlier this month.
For that race, AIPAC and affiliated groups such as United Democracy Project (UDP) had spent about $32 million on promoting the rivaling candidate who lost to El-Sayed in the race.
Now, El-Sayed is scheduled to face Rogers in the November midterm elections.
AIPAC’s heavy involvement and the growing unpopularity of the Israeli regime among Americans over wars in West Asia have become central issues in the race.
Nonetheless, AIPAC spokesperson Deryn Sousa claimed Rogers still wants the lobbyists’ support.
Sousa said, “We appreciate [former] Rep. Mike Rogers’ welcoming of pro-Israel support. Our members are highly motivated to be involved in this race, and we will be looking at every option to make the case that El-Sayed’s policies are bad for Michigan and bad for America.”
Earlier this week, California lawmaker Aisha Wahab was elected to the US Congress after defeating her opponent, Melissa Hernandez, who was also funded by pro-Israel groups.
According to media reports, United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), spent nearly $2.5m since early August to boost Hernandez.
The news outlet CNN reported that BOLD America, another group that receives funding from AIPAC, also spent $1.9m.
Analysts say America is divided over the Trump administration’s foreign policy toward the Israeli regime, and AIPAC’s backing of a candidate has a negative, toxic impact on most Americans.
Doug Gordon, a Democratic strategist at Upshift Strategies, said, “There is no question that an El-Sayed victory would be a huge defeat for AIPAC and another sign of how toxic their brand has become.”
