Pushing it down as personal responsibility, as usual.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

No, just something interesting to try of you think you can handle it and have access to a sauna.

But yes, what else can be done on a global level when temperature is rising. It's already happening so it's good to explore how we deal with it.

Find shade, cover your windows on the outside with reflective material, make sure there's proper airflow through the home, hydrate, avoid strenuous activity, etc. Nobody will do this for you unless you ask (so still on you).

Great, I'll just check with the HOA where I rent so they could tell me to fuck off on reflectice windows, mini splits and even 1 solar AC unit because I can't afford a car dependent home in my area with jobs outside of this USian BS.

JFC... Sorry the billionaires decided we're not going to address climate change so they can get more rich. They'll have proper air conditioning too, you'll have to get used to it. Have you tried having a sauna?

[-] remon@ani.social 17 points 16 hours ago

Pretty sure installing a sauna is more expensive than installing air conditioning.

Not if you lower your expectations!

I'll add that the parents of an ex of mine. Would setup a "sweat lodge" in their yard yearly with the help of their other crunchy friends. Was essentially a teepee with a pit of hot rocks in the middle. They'd all sit naked in there and chant stuff. The structure wasn't difficult to construct.

They offered for me to join. But I was like 17 and seeing my girlfriend's father's cock and balls was not high on my list.

I bought a steam tent years ago, it truly does help with the summers. Mine is "full sized" so I don't have to stick my head out of it.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago

What a weird chant.

[-] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 4 points 16 hours ago

But you'll find sauna much faster than AC currently. I wonder why ?

[-] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 1 points 12 hours ago

I just have to go outside.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago

Free standing sauna vs window AC, yes easily.

Free standing sauna vs central air, the sauna wins.

Bought our sauna from Costco for $400 in 2020, so I am sure prices have skyrocketed.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 points 15 hours ago

Cold rinsing after a hot shower has the same effect for cheap.

[-] Steve@startrek.website 20 points 15 hours ago

“just get used to it”

[-] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 4 points 11 hours ago

Heat acclimatization, yeah. You can make use of it to improve your overall performance in endurance sports too, on account of the increase in blood volume that comes from being exposed to uncomfortable levels of heat.

[-] Einskjaldi@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

It takes several weeks and you have to do it semi continually to maintain heat acclimatization. So that doesn't really work for places that don't normally get hot.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 4 points 11 hours ago

no way. love hot baths. loathe saunas. dry ones are nice to dry off after a shower quick though.

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 23 points 16 hours ago

I dunno, getting into a sauna thinking about it as training for a heatwave kinda ruins the mood don't ya think

[-] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 6 points 16 hours ago

I don't think I have a mood to enter a sauna anyway, I hate heat, even if it's cold outside

[-] mcv@lemmy.zip 4 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

The great thing about sauna is not the heat, but the jumping in ice cold water afterwards.

[-] Ghoelian@piefed.social 4 points 14 hours ago

But you have to get into the heat first, which is the part I hate...

[-] jet@hackertalks.com 1 points 1 hour ago

I do it everyday. Take a book, just close your eyes, play a podcast. Time goes pretty quick. Once you feel uncomfortable, get out and jump in the pool. It's great

[-] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago

I never really checked how this is possible when they were teaching me to wet my neck before jumping in the sea... And I will not check it now neither, I'm on a break, from... doing nothing

[-] wjrii@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

While I don't want to presume that science that feels intuitive is bad science, I'm not entirely sure how newsworthy it is to talk about how getting used to heat helps one deal with heat. People did live in hot places before AC.

It starts to feel like instructions and socialization rather than simple science journalism....

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

Can confirm, playing badminton for hours at a time during summer in poorly ventilated halls really does build your heat tolerance 😅

Pro tip, being a large bottle of water laced with electrolytes.

[-] OhmeHose@feddit.org 5 points 13 hours ago

I've sat in a lot of fridges, that did help me with coping for the cold.

Yes, Finland was a bit of a shock!

Going for a naked swim in lake after the sauna was nice though.

without air, seams accurate

[-] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 14 hours ago

I grew up going to sauna every 2nd day, but I still complain if it's too cold or especially too hot weather. 20°C is the highest comfortable temperature outside, couple more if just sitting down for a beer and not moving

[-] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 12 hours ago

What if the saunas were just full of ?

If you just thought of something bigoted, you should fix that about yourself.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

What on earth does that have to do with this?

[-] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

It was a joke at the blind spot that socializing or being around attractive people like what they used for the thumbnail is what's actually invigorating.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

2farfetched4me, I didn't get it at all. 😬
