I had an ex who visited my home country with me. Some areas are dirty and very poor, lots of people working, walking, and kids begging for money. She was fine with all of it until she saw some puppies in the street, then she cried and became critical of how unsafe it was for puppies to be in that environment. Accused my family and I about being heartless because we didn't mind the dogs. Oh, but fuck the kids, right? Needless to say, it didn't go over well.
It amazes me sometimes how normalized it is in the minds of white people to see human beings as sub-human and not worthy of their empathy.
