Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

And maybe a nice Vice Media/ documentary that details all your crimes in great detail but then says "oh gosh, good thing we had the good American heros to save the day" while all the comments are like "So unfair that they weren't in jail, I don't trust the government or anyone who feels government at all!!!"

More like you get a book deal, a blockbuster movie, and are worshipped as a deity and get paid thousands of dollars per minute to speak at commencements at “prestigious” universities

Redditors will have a conniption over this and start frothing at the mouth demanding summary executions for everyone who doesn’t bow down and kiss the cop’s feet after being pulled over an hour later

And then cry about how America is broken and be like 'look, how do you even fix this?!' hahaha

Yup, America has a homelessness problem, so what's the solution? I know, pass laws to prevent them staying somewhere safe during the winter so they die; obviously we wouldn't pass laws to kill them because that would be the kind of thing you'd expect in Vuvuzela, but you can have laws that only just happen to, unintentionally, totally not the intended effect here, kill them indirectly. Can't execute one guy who's part of the problem and destroying the country, oh no, just pass zoning laws that just so happen to kill many, many, many people whose only crime is 'failing' (being exploited and then tossed away more like). We know these people are criminals, and due to having the wealth to do so are experts at hiding their crimes usually, and when they take bribes it has a major adverse effect on the country, but no, let's give them a prison sentence, that'll fix everything.

But of course like babies when you dangle keys in front of them we still have our treats. Never mind that if we're from certain ethnic backgrounds we have to teach our kids to be careful around cops, never mind that medical bills can destroy the life of even a moderately successful family, never mind that....oh never mind everything, here's the Harry Potter remake, look, Volvomart looks like Trump!

Following People's Daily on Twitter is a trip because it's cute videos of pandas interspersed with news like this.

[–] [email protected] 75 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Synthesis: baby pandas handing out death penalties to corrupt bankers.

China has two types of death sentence (that I know of). It doesn’t say if it’s with reprieve or not. China has a version of death penalty with a 2 year reprieve where the convicted has to meet minimum behavior standards (basically don’t commit crimes) and it’s automatically turned into a life sentence instead of a death sentence.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago

If there's a reprieve it would be explicitly stated, none in this case.

Taking $151 million is insane to me. $5 million is easily enough to live comfortably on the interest for the rest of your life. That number is probably even lower with the cost of living in China. How the fuck do you not stop at some point and say "my boss was literally executed for what I'm doing right now, maybe I should chill"?

Additional context to answer some of the questions here: His superior Lai Xiaomin:

  • investigated in April 2018
  • arrested in Nov 2018
  • prosecuted in Feb 2019
  • first court trial in Oct 2020
  • sentenced to death on Jan 5, 2021
  • appeal rejected, verdict maintained on Jan 21, 2021
  • executed on Jan 29, 2021
  • corruption activities were between 2008 and 2018

As for Bai Tianhui:

  • arrested in Jan 2019
  • first court trial, sentenced to death, on May 28, 2024
  • corruption activities were between 2014 and 2018

So the jig was up when Lai was investigated in 2018, Bai was already doomed from that point on.

Presumably he had already taken a huge amount of bribes prior to his boss getting got 3 years ago, so he probably figured "in for a penny, in for a pound" and kept going.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago

Even more reason to quit while he was ahead, really. He was only increasing his chances of getting caught.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

lol yeah, I can only guess that the thrill of getting away with it was the motivation of itself.

The court acknowledged that Bai had volunteered information leading to other arrests and convictions. However, the bribes he had taken were “particularly huge” and the impacts of his crimes on society “particularly pernicious, causing … serious losses to the interests of the state and the people”.

lmao ratted and still gets canned

There should be “absolutely no mercy” in rooting out the “severe and complex” problem of corruption and fraud, Xi said.
