I don't understand this weird mix of "rugged individualism, but also I need a gated community" thing that Americans obsess over. Like, if you're already living somewhere remote out in the country, that is your walls, who are these walls keeping out? The immigrant labourers you "hire" to maintain and operate the damn thing?

I think the entire plot inside the walls is enough pasture for one cattle. That cattle pad would starve them.

Even in survivalist mode krakkers gotta have their useless lawns

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 5 points 2 hours ago

That is the most important crop they're growing there. Gotta pretend you live in Tuscany or what's the point.

I love that image because the American mind cannot comprehend living in a traditional tent inside a cave with your buddies.

Oh man, that brings back so many memories. Amazing.

[-] daniyeg@hexbear.net 15 points 3 hours ago

solar punk with american characteristics. that "multi-generational" housing is atrocious.

They never want a multistorey arcology catgirl-cry

Ah the CHUD desire to be a feudal manor lord

[-] RandallThymes@hexbear.net 5 points 2 hours ago

Is this a new hitman mission

[-] doubtingtammy@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 hour ago

Hear me out, this just needs a few changes. Take away the wall. Replace the suburban development with a little village that receives services (schools, sanitation, healthcare) from a competent national/provincial government.

This is what solarpunk is

I'm sure all that agriculture is going to go really well with no source of water.

[-] Alisu@hexbear.net 7 points 3 hours ago

Imagine wanting to live that close to your family

[-] Chana@hexbear.net 18 points 4 hours ago

C'mon gotta put that sister's house directly between your parents and grandparents as a buffer.

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 32 points 4 hours ago

If you genuinely wanted this kind of vibe and had unlimited money, just move to a small but tight knit town with a dense downtown core, put up some walls, and then buy up all the shops and keep the people who work there employed but triple their salaries, and employ everybody else in the town with similarly paid jobs in random new stores for shit you want to exist there. Congrats, you're now effectively a warlord with a private army and you have a pleasant town to live in, not some weird mcmansion fort with a vegetable garden that can maybe support a toddler.

[-] Red_Shift@hexbear.net 5 points 2 hours ago

This would require them being not completely paranoid about the poors stealing all their nice things and feeling like they're being ripped off by paying the poors more than they're worth. Being super rich poisons your mind and so they'll be suckered in by meritocracy and protestant work ethic type stuff that makes them think people need to work non stop to deserve a decent life. So this type of idea, while resulting in a better outcome for them, would seem unappealing because they'd see it as just paying for everyone else to jerk around.

Plus their rich friends who they compare themselves to would make fun of them for making such bad business decisions

Just trying to live in the neighbourhood from the Parable of the Sower but with less community and worse planning

[-] dawcas@scribe.disroot.org 4 points 3 hours ago

Are you telling us you don't wanna have a pond?

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 16 points 4 hours ago

you know, there's a smart way to get at this conceptually... a multigenerational/nontraditional family + communal housing with ecosystem service provisioning and natural resource management infrastructure.

the problem is this dipshit has settler-siege brain and that makes one do everything completely and totally wrong like a fucking toddler. this whole thing needs a giant red X through it.

[-] huf@hexbear.net 65 points 5 hours ago

ah yes, have a fort but keep the power generation and storage outside. mmm hmm. but hey, keep the "cattle field" inside, i'm sure that's enough "cattle field".

[-] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 1 points 2 minutes ago

Those aren't my wind turbines and solar panels they're the barbarians at the gate.

[-] average@hexbear.net 26 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

And you know this person is the type whose entire personality is eating meat, so it’s extra funny to me.

[-] Bloobish@hexbear.net 10 points 3 hours ago

Don't even wanna imagine if they actually know or have the labor smarts to slaughter and then butcher an entire cow carcass, cuss that's on avg a half ton creature you have to move around.
