Uh no... people aren't just lurking in the comments to jump on any little joke you make...

What makes you think people here would take comics like this so seriously that they would feel the need to come into the comments and type up a big rant to criticise you for posting it?

This is a total misrepresentation of the community. You should delete this.

Thanks for not slash essing here.

This is identical to what your maternal parent related to me last night, when we engaged in coitus to her satisfaction.

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 37 points 2 days ago

That’s really nice for both of you, she’s been lonely since my stepfather passed away from syphilis and untreated scabies last week.

[-] saltesc@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Yeah, sorry about that. I did tell him to get checked.

Or debbie downers. There was a comic strip about being a hero to your kids like in an RPG and the first comment I see is something like "you must have come from a loving family as not all parents are heros." Did you really need to say that? We know life isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago

Me: "I'm going to make a joke"

Me: proceeds to say the most obnoxious, offensive, and flatly banal thing you've ever heard in your life.

Me: Waggling eyebrows "Get it? Huh? Huh?"

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago
[-] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Me: Did ya get my joke? Huh? Huh?

Them: Yes, chuckleslord

Me: Cool, could you explain it to me, then?

[-] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 41 points 2 days ago

My litmus test is i ask "what is the joke?" If theres a clever turn of phrase or twist to expectations I chuckle to myself and move on. If I cant figure out what the clever turn of phrase or twist in expectation is, or the punchline being some kind of -ism or -phobia then yeah I'm gonna take it seriously. Unfortunately making jokes where the punchline is racism, sexism, homophoboa, transphobia, or any other kind of punching down gets a lot of engagement and responses.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 30 points 2 days ago

"It's just a joke, bro" only goes so far, you're right

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 days ago

Homophoboa sounds like a not-so-fabulous fashion accessory.

[-] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

"Gaysoupsnake" sounds messy but hot

[-] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Lmao it kinda does.

[-] DeepDown@leminal.space 8 points 2 days ago

I joked about fucked up stuff that happened to me and brave lemmings came in to make sure I knew how fucked up it was to do that to people. It was stunning and brave and I had no idea

[-] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I've found self deprecating humor or telling stories about fucked up shit happening to you is rarely funny and usually elicits more of a awkward fake laugh and/or pity vibe than a belly laugh vibe.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There goes most of comedy.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

Most good comedy are stories about something fucked up, usually where the comedian is being self-deprecating.

[-] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Do you have any evidence that thats the case?

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's such a pervasive observable reality in comedy I'm struggling not to just say "watch a comedian." Really, any comedian.

Recently, we could go with John Mulaney's performance about his drug use and rehab experience, something he continues to reference in his new series. There's James Acaster who's done entire shows that mix absurdism and heavy sarcasm with self deprecation. Patton Oswart did a fairly famous bit on him and his daughter dealing with the death of his wife. Pete Davidson's performances are about his drug use and lack of self respect.

The entire show Seinfield and every character in it. Curb Your Enthusiasm which is about the creator of Seinfield, who made the show inspired by himself, his lack of boundaries and social awareness. The show Barry is 200% dark humor.

I could go on, but I'd be naming most comedies and comedians.

[-] DeepDown@leminal.space 6 points 1 day ago

You know, maybe those reactions denote that it's bad humor but either of those are way better than virtue signaling against a person who is badly attempting to express pain.

I dunno. The comic made me think of a particular kind of internet person who is only here to be seen saying correct things in front of other morally correct people.

[-] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

If you're dealing with pain and trauma, therapy might be a good idea. Making dark self depreciating jokes online probably isnt going to actually help you deal with it.

I made a joke the other day about how some people don't pay attention and forget they have to pay at the register. Some dude in the comments lit me up about him having arthritis and how I'm an insensitive asshole because he can't hold a credit card.

Like dude, obviously I'm make a general joke and observation and am not commenting on your bitch-ass traitorous joints. Chill tf out.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago

as long as I laugh at my own jokes one person laughed, so it was worth it.

now if you'll excuse me, my dead babies won't blend themselves.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

I had a teacher in high school, sociology class, Mr. Savage. On Friday he'd entertain jokes, no restrictions (although I doubt racial or religious jokes would be okay), and one kid every week would do a dead baby joke. Every week. Got old. So when he eventually told the joke about blowing chunks, it hit.

[-] M137@lemmy.today 0 points 22 hours ago

Eh, there are to sides to this. Yes, many (not just here) react like this to things that are harmless jokes. But it's also way too common with jokes that are not actually jokes, they're stuff like racism, sexism, anti good things or pro bad things masquerading as jokes.

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago

This guy alway has to shows up in the comments to give their 2-cents.

“Ackshually this humorous situation would never happen if _______.”

Y’all know who you are.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 days ago

Actually that guy would never show up if fuck it i cant even commit to the bit its too hot

Just because something was a joke doesn't mean it isn't serious. Some of the best comedy is about really serious subject matter or comes out of really serious moments, surgeons humor or trench humor.

[-] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

This and restating the joke/comment you made in a slightly different way, sometimes also concluded with a "FTFY".

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Repeating a comment, but in a more accurate way.

FTFY

No need to thank me.

[-] Tiral@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

If it makes you feel better this is probably a "spreading hate" ban on reddit because neck beards.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

When you make a joke, you must accept the risk -- and honestly, inevitability -- of it not being funny. Refusing to accept this risk is what makes so many "comedians" into insecure shills.

[-] Reygle@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

My sister still won't speak to me for a joke I made months back- and it's her birthday next week. I'm printing this and putting it in her birthday card. Maybe I'll get lucky and she'll never speak to me again. [/joke]

But no really- fingers crossed. [/joke?]

[-] GJdan@programming.dev 9 points 2 days ago

The thing about feelings is, regardless of how silly they seem to you they are very real to the person experiencing them and should be approached from that angle. Whether the relationship is one you want to put that effort into is a different question I suppose.

I can relate. You make a throwaway comment about how your wife doesn't let you come with her to the hardware store because you'll inevitably staple a finger to a display stand and someone always always replies to harrumph about wasting staples you obviously don't plan to buy*.

*Example only. Srsy guys.

[-] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

"You put a woman through that?! You are everything wrong with society."

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
