It does seem like the most successful path to getting people in the west to support communism will be "You will have more and better quality treats."

[-] ColombianLenin@hexbear.net 29 points 1 week ago

This but in reverse was a huge part of what unironically toppled the USSR

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 28 points 1 week ago

We need an alternative to treatler that captures this phenomenon

[-] Llituro@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

You have that guy, his name is Hasan.

[-] Kefla@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

Treatsan? No, that sounds like a reject anime character. Gotta have a snappy name or it doesn't work, them's the rules

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 24 points 1 week ago

deng-cowboy "The treats shall flow"

buy it for life but for my slop

Every leftist post I see now has like 20 likes. I'm not even joking. Similar posts that would have been shown to me just days ago would have all had thousands of likes.

They're not just suppressing left wing content, these are accounts that never had many likes to begin with, what they're doing is showing the left wing people lower quality left wing content in order to get the left wing user base to stop hitting "like" on left wing content. The intent of this is to shift their content habits away from left wing content and into just about anything else. If they stop liking left wing posts because they're only being shown the low quality ones, their feeds will gradually change away from left wing content and into other stuff.

It is guided liking, they are essentially training the userbase out of its interest in good quality left wing content. These tech people see the userbase as animals to be trained like dogs.

What happened to migrating to Rednote?

[-] kleeon@hexbear.net 38 points 1 week ago

same thing that happened to migrating to mastodon/bluesky/threads - it sucks and it's not the same

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 27 points 1 week ago

I liked Rednote better than TikTok while I used it. I liked actually being able to browse videos instead of being forced to infinity scroll. But I dropped off of both well before the ownership changes.

[-] thetaT@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

i migrated to Mastodon way before the "big" migration because the experience is just genuinely better. same for Reddit->Hexbear

[-] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

My experience was kinda funny. I went from Reddit to .world and saw people malding over hexbear and grad. At first I was like, ew, Chinese and Russian propaganda, and didn't like some of the dogpiling I saw. But then I saw some people calmly explaining their point of view, and realizing that it aligned with what I believed. I saw what (I think it was) Guevara said about socialism being a form of loving people. Then I came to hexbear and slowly got radicalized further and further.

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

For me Mastodon is really more a migration from the blogosphere. Many of the blog I followed 10-15 years ago are on Mastodon but now you can talk to the bloggers in a more convenient way than comment sections. And you can follow that people from the comment sections too to see what they are up to.

Never liked Twitter much.

[-] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 33 points 1 week ago

Rednote is fun. It's wildly more left leaning than alternatives which is honestly nice.

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

It's a great app to make some Chinese penpals.

But for me the reason to be on (western) social media was always to engage with western political discourse which is obviously not as predominant on the Chinese app.

[-] SwagliacciTheBadClown@hexbear.net 24 points 1 week ago

Yeah when I briefly used it it felt very homey - connected with birders from China, South America, and Africa - and how cool we thought each others birds are doggirl-smart

Legit felt like the first time I’d actually experienced the potential of the internet lol. Nerding out that we’d all seem the same species - harlequin duck. The one by me was really blown far south from its usual range, the other in northern china, and the other in southern Chile.

Thanks al gore for making this experience possible

I've enjoyed my ~year on rednote

Trump “saved” TikTok

[-] miz@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

probably still happening

[-] godisidog@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I don’t really get xhs. I’ve followed friends so I see their content sometimes, and a handful of Chinese bands and musicians so I get content specifically related to those (usually just pictures of pretty girls with said musicians), but I feel like the algorithm doesn’t work to diversify my feed with other stuff I might like to see. Just ends up with really bland experience and I’m not sure how to change that.

[-] miz@hexbear.net 42 points 1 week ago

how much more does it suck ass now

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 51 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They're censoring CNN, which is funny until you realize that they're also censoring everything to the left of CNN

[-] miz@hexbear.net 34 points 1 week ago

censoring CNN!!? but how will we find out which letter of the alphabet China has banned this week?

[-] Speaker@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Their sense of humor is ostensibly not shared by China’s increasingly sophisticated internet czars.

Sorry you mea* C**, to*gzhi

Basically, on the day that the US branch of TikTok was taken over by Larry Ellison, they immediately began censoring anti-ICE and anti-Trump content. The word "Epstein" has also been censored. They also changed the algorithm to push chud content to people's feed. This led to a surge in uninstalls.

they don't let you say "epstein" "mossad" or "zionist"

[-] Speaker@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago

They're targeting Jewish people, smdh my damn head

[-] Kefla@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Wtf they're literally censoring us proud zionists!!!

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 32 points 1 week ago

TikTok is Facebook now. Unusable.

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 29 points 1 week ago

A lot. My feed overnight went to sports and other generic slop. Never watched sports but it kept jamming it in my feed for some reason. It keeps unfollowing accounts I like. Refollowed and same thing. Gives me old videos too. It was the best algorithm I'd used but now it sucks.

I use a modified app that lets me keyword block stuff so I did that for a lot of the slop so its a bit better today, it does make it harder to know how much the mod is doing vs the alg.

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Same on the sports. It keeps shoving nfl content on my feed, and despite my marking those videos as “not interested” it doesn’t matter.

Lately my feed has been 90% Russian content that I cant even read

[-] rootsbreadandmakka@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago

It’s been extremely glitchy since the us takeover. I think it was down for a couple hours at one point too

[-] Commiechameleon@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

I thought they were a company based in Singapore? Or was it just the representative?

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 45 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It was always "owned" by the Chinese Bytedance, but the operation was split with most of the global operation run from Singapore and the Chinese operation run separately for regulation/censorship compliance. Now the US arm is also run separately for regulation/censorship compliance, but instead of getting the "no glorifying being rich" stuff we're getting "no talking about left of goebbels politics".

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

It must be more than a US-centric change because the app also changed here in EU.

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Maybe the algo and stuff are different because of EU regulations? AFAIK TikTok Europe is still run from Singapore, it's not now owned by Larry Ellison et al like the US arm is.

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago

I received the fabled popup on my device on Jan 23 and the content immediately changed. That might be due to downloading from the US app store originally, yet in the past the algorithm was dependent on my physical location instead.

My feed definitely changed after the switch and I’m not in the US

[-] Valarie@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 week ago

The eu and remainder of the world have experienced no changes, the changes were specifically the algorithm for displaying things to people in american territory and on us servers

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago
[-] Valarie@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 1 week ago
[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

I’m certain that my app changed, but it might be due to which store I downloaded from. I’ll try downloading from an EU store and see if this fixes it.

[-] Valarie@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 week ago

I can't garuntee anything but if I'm reading it right that is what it says

[-] Commiechameleon@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

O... I haven't been back on tik tok in a min, it was my lil rednote before rednote. But I was on briefly after it was turned off and on again and it WAS relatively similar. Mostly getting left wing takes and hasanabi clips. So idk what it's been turned into now. Will it flag anything like red sun in the sky, trotsky =lib, or hot maoists in my area?

[-] ExotiqueMatter@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

not that it'll ever happen, but the US effectively doing an accidental color revolution on themselves by agitating their youth would be extremely funny.
