It's actually misandrist because girl math is actual math. Originally it had to do with how a person earmarked money spent and not spending it and deciding to spend it on something else and considering that to cost zero. But that works out economically as that money was already spent and it is, in fact, how economists consider spending. So as it turns out, "girl math" is just conventional economics and "guy math" is wrong as guys are effectively emotionally "spending" the money twice.

Therefore
7.99 = 8
So
8 = 7.99 = 7.95 = 5
It only works for 7 and 8 because those are uncomfortable numbers that we want to be another number, but going from 8 to 10 is too big because we go from one digit to two.
edit: additionally if 6 was 8 it also wouldn't work, because 6 is a number that feels wrong to mess with. Hence why, when people ballpark amounts, they often guesstimate "about 6 or 7". This also leads on to reinforce the current gen alpha 67eeen mindworm
I would guess this is because of subitizing. Around 7 is the maximum number for many people.

Not exactly, what he's saying is that "a $5 DLC" is more of a vibe than a specific price point, and people mentally treat DLCs with both $4 and $8 price points as being "a $5 DLC". So there's no point in lowering the price to $4 because it won't increase sales and you may as well charge $8 because it's not until you get to $9 that people re-evaluate and decide it's a different vibe, "a $10 DLC", which feels like a bigger purchase.
But there's just as little point in lowering an $8 dlc to $5 as to $4. There would be a point in raising a $4 to $8, and that's a larger differential than $5 to $8.

This being about Peak totally makes sense. One of the best five bucks I've ever spent. Actually, it was ten bucks because I bought a copy for my girlfriend so we can play together.
To think you could spend twenty bucks to play a game with four friends for less than the price of a single AAA game is wild. And it still goes on sale too!
this reminds me of my theory that people will unthinkingly spend money as long as the price is below a pack of cigarettes.
So that's why those fuckers are so expensive these days!
