So the democrats want to lose yeah.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 22 hours ago

Nina does, Newsom and Pritzker don't.

I think there might be at least 3 Democrats, maybe as many a 5

[-] [email protected] 70 points 1 day ago

Nina, I don't think you understand, we're asking for the people who are drawing these districts to be thrown in a dark pit. I don't think "bipartisan legislation" has anything to do with the pit idea.

[-] [email protected] 40 points 1 day ago

Heya everybody, bipartisan legislation is over this away... barbara-pit

[-] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

One day they’ll train the bipartisan legislation to stand up and physically defend democracy. Kind of like how they think the constitution and laws on paper will actually get up and stand in front of criminals, physically barring them from criminaling

bipartisan legislation with who, nina

[-] [email protected] 32 points 1 day ago

"Oh but I'm so civil and wise I'm going to court and include all opinions" including the ones of Nazis who want people with more melanin than a sheet of loose leaf to be redacted? Fuck's wrong with you?

One side is distinctly advantaged by doing the Bad Thing, and the other is crippled by it. Clearly both sides are equally willing to come together on this issue.

The year is 2029 and the GOP Soylent Processing Mills are in operation. Like the sci-fi Soylent Green - it's being made secretly and turned into food covertly. But unlike the sci-fi version - GOP Soylent is only going to be fed to the poor. It will be part of such things as school lunches and government cheese. The GOP is beyond gleeful.

Unlike the public - Nina Turner knows all of this. But as she's on the train heading to be converted to a grotesque foodstuff - in a loud voice audible to everybody in the train car she yells out - "It's still not too late for a bipartisan solutions!" Her outburst was caught on CCTV. The clip - raw and in meme form - trended for many months and was shared with great mirth on ICE's private social media.

Thinking they would have to hide this is very wishful thinking.

...Does she mean that we should wait until dems win congress with the new gerrymandered districts, or does she think the republicans in charge will graciously leave power on the table?

I never took her for dumb before. Honestly disappointed.

[-] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago

Actually, looking deeper seems she's arguing this to a point:

Newscum is using this as a presidential campaigning ploy to draw attention to his counter action as opposed to the original issue and that this needs to be resolved with grassroots pressure as opposed to letting the Dems also further their grip on what power they can maintain via bipartisan activism.

This is stupid in a very different way.

A. This assumes that grassroot activists are heavily interested and able to get a large enough anti gerrymandering protest/strike combo going at a level and sustain it long enough to cause actual harm to the nation. B. That the above wouldn't be swapped with a massive crackdown that just diverts the issue as the only thing people would be able to focus on is the crackdown. C.That we have the organized capacity setup for these activists and people to do that or can establish it before 2026 D. That a nation, that she has mentioned in the follow ups has been repressively fascist to its minorities before, is a democracy and these institutions are worthy saving E. That even if the institutions are worth saving (not) that they aren't going to just be bulldozed with fascism anyways making the gerrymandering issue and any resistance to it only temporary until it's supplanted by something much greater.

And there are like a dozen other things, but we're getting into the territory of liberalism as opposed to logistical and strategical issues the more I go on so I'll digress.

Newscum is using this as a presidential campaigning ploy to draw attention to his counter action as opposed to the original issue and that this needs to be resolved with grassroots pressure as opposed to letting the Dems also further their grip on what power they can maintain via bipartisan activism.

it's clear that this bid is going to fail given the legal hurdles california has enacted to prevent gerrymandering along with the legal challenges that will inevitably halt it before it has a chance to be enacted before the election cycle they're targeting.

so then, that only leaves the political capital that newsom is going to get from this gamit and it's already paying dividends on social media before it's started.

[-] [email protected] 23 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh god she's comparing this to the Missouri compromise.
The lesson of that wasn't that you shouldn't fight! It wasn't that compromise and bipartisanship was the way to go!

[-] [email protected] 22 points 1 day ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

holy shit

"if you're being beaten to death you should negotiate with the guys kicking you in the head and hope they agree that they shouldn't step on your throat"

[-] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago

Even by the "bipartisan legislation" logic, the Dems can and should do blue redistricting. In order for there to be some kind of reform that ends gerrymandering, you have to demonstrate that it's a mutually assured destruction situation.

... and even then, the Rs might make the simple calculation that they have more to gain than to lose, and just let it happen in blue states. This is not a system that can easily fix itself.

[-] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

After all they did to her she's still simping for the party. wall-talk

[-] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago

Even worse than a California lib jesse-wtf

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Honestly agree with her on the first point, the dems are just using this as an excuse to grab more power, and if we've learned anything for the past couple decades they won't use that power to actually help people.

The second response is dumb though, the answer should be it's just 5 seats in an election that should be an easy slam dunk for the opposition. It's a midterm election, they're the opposition, Republicans have an extremely small majority going into it, and trump is very unpopular. If the dems gave any sort of positive platform to help people they could easily take a huge majority. They don't want to do that so they're just gonna cheat like the Republicans and get even more complacent with their new easy districts where they'll run shitty corporate California dems like Newsom wants.

The dems need to be afraid of losing if they're ever going to change and this sort of shit just takes away that fear.

the dems are a lost cause and won't change

OK, so we shouldn't give them more power to suppress popular movements. They aren't just going to use this to suppress the conservatives, odds are they'll be "forced" to put conservatives in progressive districts and then they'll say they have to run a centrist for "safety".

[-] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

Didn't Trump almost win New York this election? I think your party needs it more than they do Tina.

[-] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

Trump did slightly better than he did in 2020, but he still lost by a million votes, rather than two million like in 2020. I think you're maybe thinking of how New York swung the most towards Republicans more than any other state compared to previous elections.

Also New York democrats did try to gerrymander in 2020 after the census, but they fucked it up so badly that a judge struck it down then assigned an "independent" agency to redraw the map, which gave republicans 3 seats lol.

[-] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

Damn, should have just done the Ohio thing where you keep sending illegal maps that get struck down until the election comes and they have no choice but to accept your massively gerrymandered map.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

That's funny as hell, I'd love to be the dude sending maps. I'd put one in that wasn't even Ohio like some oblast or Russia or something.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago

No, the funny part is that no one was held in contempt because one of the supreme court judges is the governor's son

[-] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

Damn how do you fuck up gerrymandering?

[-] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

Can't you just un-gerrymander districts and give the Dems a huge comparative advantage in many places?

[-] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You could but how and why would you? The people who draw the maps are the elected representatives and the supreme court has ruled it's legal to gerrymander for political gain. The places where un-gerrymandering would benefit the democrats typically don't have democrats drawing the borders, and the places where democrats are drawing the borders they are already gerrymandering too (the play suggested is to be more blatant about it)

[-] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

The only way it gets fixed is if both parties somehow felt they were disadvantaged by it and came together to end the practice. That requires the Dems to do it as hard as the Reps are to demonstrate the threat, and then maybe there could be a mutual disarmament of some kind, but more likely each side just does it to the max and then the political system just stays like that.

[-] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The thing democrats dont realise is that republicans are going to have to go to prison if they want to save their system as it is, and that is not going to happen. They can tit for tat if they want but the republicans can and will just break the law and spit on the norms, and they will escalate to any level. They've already had the supreme court invalidate the constitution, they've already occupied a Democratic aligned city, they are already building the fucking camps.

If they want to save the norms they have to throw trump in jail, get half his cabinet too and a bunch of the supreme justices too. And since that can't happen this isn't salvageable. In 8 years there will be a new fascist goon in office and the democrats can't undo what trump did without doing as I said. Even if they win every single election in the midterms and boot trump out of office, the tools the next guy will use aren't destroyed and will just be picked up again. Even if the civil war doesnt come and the fascist project doesnt crumble, the new guy will just pick up where trump left off.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

Agreed, tit for tat is by definition reactive, meaning that if there's escalation the Rs will always have the initiative. The Dems are paralyzed by design, not by accident or some kind of failure on their part, and the fascist escalation currently taking place is agnostic as to which party carries it out because it's about neutralizing anti-capitalist sentiment at home while turning labor aristocrats into proletarians to keep the profit accumulation machine turning.
