Ai chatbots are only smart at things you don't understand. For those that you're an expert in, you quickly realize Ai is pretty dumb and constantly hallucinating on shrooms.
Yeah I was gonna say something like this too. The only thing AI can really do is talk very confidently and I maybe that's all it takes for some people.
Someone I often describe as the most gullible person I've ever met who will believe basically anything you tell them if you do it in an authoritative manner is extremely enthusiastic about AI.

I'm sure this is 100% true for people like Sam Altman specifically. He certainly doesn't know anyone smarter than a chatbot.
There are two people in my life I'd say are the smartest people I know. One is a chemical engineering PhD who has an uncanny ability to do math and science stuff. It comes naturally to her in a way I've never seen with another person. She's also incredibly bad at managing interpersonal relationships, seems to exclusively date guys who are stalkers, and she's prone to weird schemes where she tries to get her colleagues fired over very small things. She doesn't get angry or have outbursts, but she does seem to enjoy arguing a lot. She can be professional but it seems like she never turns that off, so she comes across as very cold to some people who don't know her well. And maybe she does have mental health problems but I wouldn't trust her to do something like help organize a birthday party.
The other smartest person I know is also my best friend. She's the most chill person I've ever met and has an uncanny ability to read a person. She's also good at impressions, like she can mimic a person's mannerisms and inflections within minutes of meeting them. She's so chill she has no idea about things like who the president is, or what's going on in the news. None of that. She's just into musicals and making DIY perfume and going to green day concerts. She's incredibly bad with money and frequently has to ask me to help pay her phone bill or whatever. And I do because I love and cherish her a lot. I also would not trust her to organize a birthday but that's because she'd dive way too deep into it. She'd obsess and plan for it for a month and get frustrated, even if I tell her she doesn't have to be perfect. She's too empathetic and it messes her up.
I don't know where I was going with this honestly but it made me think of two of my friends. I guess I wouldn't want either of them as an AI. If either were made smarter I feel like both would collapse from pressure or self-doubt or something. It wouldn't be helpful.

I saw an online comment by a non-native English speaker that there are very few squirrels in Brazilian cities. That surprised me because I thought city squirrels were a worldwide thing. I told myself to pretend that google didn't exist because googling would only annoy me and give me shit. But I didn't listen to myself and I googled. And I googled. And I googled some more. I must have spent about 10+ minutes on what used to be a pretty simple sort of google search.
At one point google lead to me to a pointless Reddit thread with a stupid question and annoyed replies. The thread was 6 years old and it had 8 upvotes. I'm convinced at this point that google is actively destroying search so you do one of two things...
- Keep searching so google can serve up more and more and more ads even though I never see that shit because use ad blockers.
or ideally for google - eventually over time...
- You'll give up and read the garbage AI summaries. Which also keeps you on google.

I did learn that squirrels were intentionally introduced to American cities. But that was about it.

I don't think you can discount #2. Google wants a absolute max sized captive audience. Some people will happily eat the AI slop and stop there.

Cheap compared to ML researcher TC for sure. You could write a book on the culture of OpenAI (and Anthropic, although that's a bit different) — a ton of employees there genuinely think that they will create AGI and bring the singularity. From what I've read, it's a cult-like environment of very highly paid people who are big into effective altruism and effective altruism. Not quite to the degree of the Zizians, but closer than I'd like.
