Snip:

Protesters in Kiev shouted insults at Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on Tuesday, denouncing his decision to back legislation curbing the independence of anti-corruption agencies.

Zelensky had just signed a bill into law granting the Prosecutor General’s Office authority to intervene in the operations of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).

The move followed security raids on NABU offices and the arrest of a senior official accused of spying for Russia. The legislation sparked concern in the EU and drew sharp criticism from opposition politicians.

Demonstrators gathered in central Kiev, chanting “Zelya is the devil,” using a mocking diminutive of Zelensky’s surname. Others shouted “Shame” and “Treason,” holding signs demanding the preservation of the anti-corruption system’s independence. The chants reportedly intensified after news broke that Zelensky had ignored calls to veto the bill.

are they going to riot because he's not fascist enough

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 33 points 6 months ago

They are actually protesting for a good reason in this case, based on the information presented. A lot of people take the issue of corruption very seriously in Ukraine, given its long-standing problems with it.

fell-for-it-again

To the brave soldiers of the color revolution swapping out the regime the West had them install just 9 years ago for yet another Western regime.

Poroshenko was the guy who was made head of state in the wake of the color revolution (11 years ago), with Zelensky campaigning on a more conciliatory position and then pivoting in office (6 years ago). They are now vying for a third administration that definitely won't betray them. Ukraine is like the South Korea of Eastern Europe at this point, speaking strictly in terms of political representation.

The "Orange Revolution" was to keep the corrupt Yanukovich from power who supposedly stole the election, only for their guy Yushchenko to be so corrupt and backstabbing his allies that Yanukovich became president after him anyway.

In his final days in office he then pulled this banger.

This notorious fact of Ukrainian politics was instated by a president whose approval was in the single digits.

That's astonishing, honestly. How was it so successful? Was it just that all the fascists waiting in the wings needed was a crack in the door?

I think you're asking about Bandera and the nazi stuff that seems like pulling out of his ass move, but no its a long term "project" i.e the US always planned and supported a "reserve" army of (neo)nazis that would be activated in case of a soviet invasion. In Ukraine there was no incentive after the USSR fall to fix or tackle's Ukrainian far-right nazism. It was the same plan as before. They would be useful eventualy as a anti-Russian force in Ukraine.

I know about like Operation Bloodstone and such, but there's a difference between militant Nazi factions existing in society at all vs the cult of Bandera that we see in Ukraine's contemporary mainstream society, especially since the article makes it sound borderline scandalous not that long ago.
