Critical support to Comrade Vader in his pursuit of killing slavers

Darth Vader was confirmed as a Chapotraphouse listener by killing a slaveowner

Any time someone says ”the prequels were good, actually” I find it sus that they never bring up that the Jedi were like yes-honey-left ”You don't take Republic credits? Sure thing Mr. Slave Owner, let me just get the currency you desire” instead of killing him. Before you say ”the Jedi don't just kill, what about muh civility?” it could've been presented as a breach of the Jedi moral code (yeah, killing a slave owner is moral but bear with me) that led Anakin to question it.

They never bring up that Watto is an antisemitic caricature either, come to think of it.

In some ways it portrays the fecklessness of liberal civility politics. Instead of freeing the slaves they buy only the child slave and leave his mother to die in slavery. Institutions are crumbling from inside and out and it is easily kicked down at the right kind of push in a crisis.

I don't understand how you can watch the prequels and come away thinking that the Jedi are enlightened. In the first trilogy the only real exposure to Jedi was Yoda and Obi wan teaching Luke, but when you see how that works out in practice it is a farce.

The Kingdom of Conscience will be exactly as it is now. Jedi don't really have beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded. Jediism isn't change -- not even incremental change. It is control. Over yourself and the world. Exercise it. Look up at the sky, at the dark shapes of Republican spaceships hanging there. Ask yourself: is there something sinister in Jediism? And then answer: no. God is in his heaven. Everything is normal on Coruscant.

Also, despite giving Luke the training he needs, even in the original trilogy the Jedi constantly lie and are wrong.

Okay, Obi-Wan lying about Vader killing his father and not telling him Leia was his sister were actually retcons by the later films, but both Obi-Wan and Yoda tell him not to save his friends in Cloud City, and later they both tell him he needs to kill Vader when the Emperor is only defeated by sparing him.

Ime when people defend the sequels, the argument tends to be that the text is an intentional critique of the Jedi. I personally think there is something to this reading, as the story is supposed to be about the failure of the Republic. It's just that... they're very bad movies lol.

Also, sidenote: Watto is an anti-Arab caricature, not antisemitic. It's just that everyone has been extra aware of antisemitic tropes these last few years, which coincided with the prequels being reappraised 🤷

I recall reading somewhere that the character of Watto managed to offend Jews, Arabs, Greeks, Italians...anyone else I'm missing here? Like he's one of the most offensive characters in cinematic history. The Neimoidians also manage to caricature the Japanese while Jar-Jar manages to caricature Jamaicans in the same film...Boss Nass is also a caricature of a "primitive" African chieftain.

It's really too bad. Now we can't even have incredibly racist characters in our shitty Star Wars movies anymore because of woke.

My kids and I recently rewatched all the Star Wars movies. Of the prequels, we actually thought the second one was the worst. "The one with Andor" is the only genuinely fun and re-watchable Star Wars film made since ROTJ. The Solo one also might have been good if they hadn't attempted the impossible task of having someone other than Harrison Ford be Solo.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 week ago

Yeah the prequels are a rich tapestry of racism — I really don't know wtf was going on in Lucas's head. Worse, I don't remember it really being discussed so much at the time — real End of History, post-political-correctness vibes 😬

The thing I noticed when introducing my kids to Star Wars was how boring the prequels are. The original trilogy are very tight movies, and will keep a young child gripped for the entire runtime — getting a child to sit though the mid-section of TPM otoh ...

Watto managed to offend Jews, Arabs, Greeks, Italians

Expert level racism?

As to that specific point, Anakin is a young child at this point and didn't really see what was happening with the gambling and the fate of his mother.

I think the second episode Anakin finding contradictions like the handwaving away of slavers in another society to work with the elite would be compelling world building. It would add weight to killing Duku because he's had enough of the bullshit.

But you'd have to reimagine the sith and his downfall to get a consistent narrative out of it. Sith aren't a good allegory for slippery fascists if memory serves. They're more like the fire nation while it's evil in Avatar. They endlessly seek passion and whoever is strongest is right. If Anakin is to become the strongest sith, it's not by virtue of a series of principals, it's by being the edgiest, most fucked up guy. So if he had disagreements with the Jedi, he'd be manipulated superficially before he let his love for Padme overwhelm his good nature.

Anakin might benefit from a good foil in a principled gray Jedi. During his downfall he's presented with Watto's head and a note from now dead Mom. The gray Jedi had a premonition about an insidious evil blossoming into barbarism. Therefore they want to join forces so they can root out injustice that feckless Jedi let fester. This urge is hand waved away by the chancellor "that's not going to save Padme, you're giving up on love/they're not organized, they just want to go do adventurism."

Post-younglings you have an excuse for another lightsaber fight with this foil and Anakin really gets spurned by contradictions. Not only is Padme shocked about killing the younglings, internally he's like "killing Watto was good actually, am I becoming a monster just because I love someone?! No, everyone else is wrong! Only I can hold this world together... Is that Padme coming to the lava planet?"

Anakin is a young child at this point and didn't really see what was happening with the gambling and the fate of his mother.

I'm surprised he came out of that without either a gambling addiction or vendetta against gambling.

People have retconned that, and many other shitty jedi behavior as "the jedi had been in decay ever since the sith went into hiding, they were never good, they were space warrior priest cops exacting the will of the republic in the name of some bullshit balance"

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't know if that is a retcon so much as the text of the prequels.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

I don't think Lucas had such depth of themes when putting the prequels together.

Vader is now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty planet will never be washed away, save with blood.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Actually conspires with hutts like a good soldier (in all forms lmao)

[–] [email protected] 36 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Liberals be making their villains kill slavers again.

amogus

[–] [email protected] 35 points 1 week ago

This is the exact sort of petty bitch behaviour I expect of Kieron Gillen era Darth Vader.

Do you think Vader ever found out his own daughter choked out Jabba the Hutt with her slave leash? I bet he would have thought that was tight as fuck

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Fuck that gwimbly-looking ahh slaver.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 1 week ago

I wonder if it was like "day 2000th of vader costume log: fucking force, i haven't killed that slaver yet haven't i?" or "day3: so, i've killed senator nr. 304th, next on my shitlist: watto"

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I am upset if Vader is one of those figures that stops being a villan as society gets worse around him.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

Broke: Society is bad so Vader's a good guy now because he's good by comparison

Woke: The galaxy is rife with corruption and fascism....and thus they deserve an even bigger villain like Vader crashing out on them.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 week ago

Vader: I beat Sebulba, I can sure as shit beat your ass!

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Uncritical support. Screw that goofy slaver

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 week ago

Is Sebulba in it as well? soypoint-1
