People have retconned that, and many other shitty jedi behavior as "the jedi had been in decay ever since the sith went into hiding, they were never good, they were space warrior priest cops exacting the will of the republic in the name of some bullshit balance"

I don't know if that is a retcon so much as the text of the prequels.

I don't think Lucas had such depth of themes when putting the prequels together.
