"When President Trump invited me to speak at this convention, there was political unrest. On the left and on the right. (It's) hard to believe. Anti-union groups demanded that Trump rescind the invitation. The left called me a traitor. This is precisely why it's so important for me to be here today. Think about this: The Teamsters are doing something correct if the extremes of both parties think I shouldn't be on this stage."
Sean O'Brien, Teamsters President @ RNC

If a billionaire businessman who’s famous for cheating workers asks your union to give a speech at his event, he is making fun of you.

and yet even some people here were defending Sean Fain not too long ago... you just can't win.. people want to believe in these small hopes that not everything is crooked and fucked... but it is

Right, like I'm sure he's lib in many ways but I've yet to really see anything too bad out of him yet

What happened with Sean Fain?

[-] [email protected] 18 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Assume y'all mean Shawn Fain - no pedantry intended, I just 100% read the comment as Sinn Féin and wondered what shit they did lmao

[-] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago

You’re correct, I didn’t remember how it was spelled and was just using the same spelling as the commenter I replied to haha

Literally endorsed biden, which should've gathered much more outrage than just speaking at a convention

[-] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

Exactly. Why would he even think about speaking to the DNC?

he stole biden's electoral strategy, that's fucked up

Class traitor. The Republicans offer nothing!

[-] [email protected] 54 points 10 months ago

Well to be fair, neither do the Democrats

[-] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago

Yeah that would also be cringe. But at least there's something resembling precedent there. This is just unconscionable

sean o'brien going on the rnc stage to perform fellatio on the most bought and paid kochhead john bircherites the right fascists have to offer is the most deeply embarrassing thing to happen to amerikkkan labor unions in quite some time

[-] [email protected] 40 points 10 months ago

American unions aren't real

[-] [email protected] 22 points 10 months ago

Their primary purpose is insurance/retirement funds so literally yes they're not real unions

The DNC isn't exaxtly pro-Union, but how ignorant do you have to be to try to work with the GOP?

If I were optimistic I'd say this could be him trying to pressure the democrats for more concessions but I know how pathetic unions can be here.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 10 months ago

It was pretty wild last summer to see basically everyone on the left except a few trotskyists support the Teamster-UPS contract. Hopefully this wakes some people up to how feckless American labor unions are.

[-] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I have nothing against this strategy in principle and it's something that I hoped would be attempted, there is 0 reason for certain unions (like amazon worker unions because to my knowledge bezos hates republicans) not to play the 2 parties against each other and it's clear that just lobbying democrats isn't enough. Let's see how it goes and if they manage to squeeze something out of the gop

The american left has to be feel less bad about not being 100% loyal to democrats and letting them lose once in a while to pay some cost of them not backing labour that's for sure

[-] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago

He should have at least asked for some kind of concession before even showing up. The GOP isn't even paying lip service to unions other than just saying "we support unions" with absolutely no policy proposals to back it up, and a long history of being the most rabidly anti-union force in the world. The fact that the teamsters president is speaking at this convention implies that the party is softening on labor, when there's zero evidence that that's the case. Big L for Sean

I was reading this axios article earlier thats basically saying the same thing I mostly rolled my eyes at it but found it mildly interesting as an experiment to observe whether or not classically following the american union tradition of tailiing the democrats will yield more benefits for the unions and the wider working class or playing as third party willing to withhold support or even throw in with whoever's willing to grant greater concessions will yield more benefits for the unions and the wider working class.

Personally I'd much rather see a stronger electoral third party to ensure some actual bullying of shitlibs can occur but we'll have to make do with what we got since the american communist movement is still trying to rework themselves into the unions and have zero say on any issue.
