I thought dune 1 and 2 were both great but I unironically did fall asleep for segments of both of them. in my defense i was really comfy at the time comfy-cool

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I fell asleep during dune because it takes more than a day to read

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What? And you missed out on the gom jabbar and the kwisatz haderach, and the landsraad and the bene gesserit, and doodloo mcdoodloo and the plunket splanket and all the other sesame street sounding words?

The syfy miniseries is the superior version. Superfans of Villeneuve (AKA Dennis Newton) act like they’ve never seen a movie before. I will die on this hill (or dune). Come at me, Harkonnen scum.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 4 months ago (1 children)

the virgin generic sci-fi armor vs the gigachad space landsknecht

the miniseries wins just by virtue of having actual color, I'm so fucking tired of the desaturated color grading trend

To be fair the new Sardaukar aren't that bad, at least more memorable design than basically everything other in that movie. But you're right about the desaturation, it's crazy, Giedi Prime was literally all in blinding white and grayscale (though that would explain why Gammu was so fucked up in Heretics era).

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (3 children)

tbf, with Giedi Prime they're at least doing it deliberately because of some lore mumbo-jumbo about how that planet's sun works

I mean, it still hurts my eyes to look at, but there was some vision involved. The desaturation elsewhere is a lot more glaring

And interior shots in particular piss me off, it's not just the lack of color, it's the lack of... anything. It's like people in Denis' Dune universe have just recently invented the concept of furniture, and haven't gotten around to figuring out interior decoration yet

like, I sort of get what's he going for, evoking some sort of coldness and desolation with the environments, I just think it looks like shit (and also feel like the setting with space feudalism and millennia-old feuds between noble families ought to not look like this, that's why I love the space landsknechts from the miniseries so much, it's a silly idea but for me it's absolutely perfect to have that as the uniform of the emperor's personal army)

True, and same for Arrakis. While i don't remember there was anything about it in the book itself, apart from the usual desert sun mentions, Herbert did wrote in the appendix what stars those planets orbits. Arrakis is a satellite of Canopus, very bright white giant star, so the light would be harsh, and Giedi Prime orbits Beta Ophiuchi, which is a orange star slightly colder than Sun, but it's currently dying in the form of orange giant over 60 times brighter than Sun, meaning that Giedi Prime is absolutely blasted with light (but not the heat) and the star would be fuckhueg in the sky.

Yeah. Also i was pretty disappointed that Arrakin city was only shown as a single fortress - and in this context the palms did not had much sense.

that’s why I love the space landsknechts from the miniseries so much

Yeah i love the landsknechts too, though i cannot miss the fact that they were very much desaturated, into the blacks and purples while original landsknechts were looking as much as a peacocks as they could. Though the Salusa Secundus scene in the new movie was awesome, in the 1st part Sardaukar were successfully build as incredible elite dread army, but it was completely abandoned in 2nd part where they barely even register.

My neck hurts from agreeing so much

[–] [email protected] 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I disagree the 1985 adaptation is the most pure as it has Patrick Stewart cradling a pug while blasting Harkonnen scum

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Just watched dune 2 and yeah I'm gonna say I like lynch more. Read the books several times. I like the new visuals but ffs the dialogue the casting the choices are so childish imho. At least lynch just decided let's be crazy lol

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The concept art from Jadorowski is also pretty awesome and is even more extreme than the Lynch designs, and tbh I feel Dune should have been far weirder given it's so far out in the future. The only thing I kinda like is the Harkonnen design making them look like mole people (then again Jadorowski wanted Feyd Rautha to more or less be like a future style David Bowie which would have rocked on the big screen).

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Oh 100% behind Jadorowski . I wish they had been able to pull of the Mobius version in the 70s that would have been the best

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

The new movies were questionable for me. On one side they cut off many important scenes and major characters (Piter de Vries was shown for like a minute totasl, but wasn't even mentioned by name!) to put some minor character development and many sand scenes, but on the other they inserted many things that might been in the book but were only introduced partially in Messiah because during writing book 1 F.H. did not yet thought of it.

EDIT: Ultimately, the thing to do is to watch all three versions. Each of them have some strong and some weak points and all three complement themselves to make pretty much complete picture. And also infinite nerd discussion potential.

I like Villeneuve because of his grounded, visual storytelling, his ability to get the most out of his actors, and whoever he hires to do cinematography. He's been my favorite director since I realized he did most of my favorite game of thrones episodes.

Villeneuve's dune is my new favorite movie. There was also something special about finishing the book for the first time, then watching P1 and P2 for the first time, all within 3 days.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Villeneuve is my fav director too. I don’t think he directed any game of thrones episodes though

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

no idea who i'm confusing him with. It must've been sicario then. emilie-shrug

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Sicario is what did it for me too. It’s a banger

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago

Miniseries sietch!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago

They just love snoozing.

Would you mind going into detail?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I liked it more than the second one so it's objectively better and anyone who disagrees is wrong
