Zhou Enlai, born on this day in 1898, was a communist revolutionary, statesman, and military officer who served as the 1st Premier of the People's Republic of China from 1949 to 1976. "All diplomacy is a continuation of war by other means."

Zhou was educated in a missionary college in Tianjin before studying at a Japanese university. In Tianjin, he met his future wife, Deng Yingchao while participating in a radical political group known as the "Awakening Society". In 1920, Zhou moved to France, where he helped form the overseas branch of the Communist Party of China. He also lived in Britain and Germany before returning to China in 1924.

While working in the Political Department of the Whampoa Military Academy, Zhou was also made the secretary of the Communist Party of Guangdong-Guangxi, and served as the CPC representative with the rank of major-general.

After the Chinese Civil War broke out in 1927, Zhou served in the communist forces, helping establish and oversee a network of underground cells of communist resistance. Zhou played a leading role in the Long March of 1934-35, an arduous military retreat of communist forces over 8,000 miles.

Following the Zunyi Conference in 1935, Mao Zedong became Zhou's assistant. After the conclusion of the Long March, Mao officially took over Zhou Enlai's leading position in the CPC, while Zhou took a secondary position as vice-chairman. Both would hold their leadership positions until their deaths in 1976.

Zhou was a prominent participant in the 1955 Asian–African Conference, held in Indonesia. The conference produced a declaration in strongly in favor of peace, the abolition of nuclear arms, general arms reduction, and the principle of universal representation at the United Nations. Zhou was critical of American imperial aggression and stated "the population of Asia will never forget that the first atom bomb was exploded on Asian soil."

Zhou passed away from bladder cancer on January 8th, 1976, just nine months before Mao Zedong's death in September that year.

"Today the first unification of the Chinese people has emerged. The people themselves have become the masters of Chinese soil, and the rule of the reactionaries in China has been irrevocably overthrown."

Zhou Enlai, from "Chinese People Will not Tolerate Aggression" (October 1950)

TFW you commit to finishing a task for a event, but suddenly the event is rapidly approaching and you really don't feel like finishing the task which is now partially completed, but you're not sure if your disappointment over not finishing the task in time for the event will be worse than just expending the energy to finish it and being exhausted kitty-cri-screm

Saying 'simp', not in the modern, misogynistic way; but in the more old-fashioned, ableist way.

My work is actually really good about not messaging you outside of business hours. Low-key disappointing because I was just getting good at enforcing personal boundaries and I won't get a chance.

The Peruvian submission to the 2024 Oscar foreign film section was a movie called "The Erection of Toribio Bardelli"
The is is the plot synopsis on wikipedia:

Toribio Bardelli is an older man, who together with his four children, now adults, form a dysfunctional and failed family. About to turn 70, Toribio will pursue his only goal in life: to have an erection again

Card counting went upside-down today, as I knew it eventually would. Felt like shit until I went to my spreadsheet and saw that I'm still in the green overall. Gonna take a break from casino play and just spend a week practicing and sharpening my game for when I go back.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

[–] [email protected] 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

we'd scream in each other's faces in some sort of vaguely viking-coded bonding ritual screm-a

A Jedi cardio guy who always shows up late and out of breath to meetings on Coruscant because they insist on taking the stairs

All the clandestine meetings and jedi council scenes go the same way, but he arrives halfway through and spends the whole time catching his breath, massaging a stich from his side, once or twice he drinks water too fast and inhales a little and coughs for like 30 seconds and the main characters all pause their conversation to look at him in concern.

Ordered two consoles from Japan via Sendico (Neo Geo CD and a Panasonic 3DO). Cheapest shipping option was by boat and took 2 months, still like $60-70. Should have been here today or tomorrow. I check the tracking number. It's been shipped to the wrong address (their town name is the name of my county/township). So it's been marked return to sender and after contacting everyone there's nothing I can do. I gotta' wait for them to ship it back to Japan and then I'm probably going to be forced into paying to ship it back to me. I ordered this on January 20th. So fucking annoyed. I hate online shopping. I should have just bought it from the eBay sellers. I was only going to save maaaaybe $150 this way and now I'm probably going to just barely break even with a massive headache to deal with.

I've been replaying Elden Ring after they announced the dlc and the elden beast fight is such a letdown. I want to like it because the concept, visuals and music are so cool, but half of the fight is just chasing it across the arena. Then when you're close to it, you have to constantly fight with the camera to see what it's doing. At least Radagon is really fun, and if you die to some random nonsense elden beast does you get to fight him again.

Today i learned about what happened Jeju island, syngman rhee and mccarthyism (kind of)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCryt_Hw-rM

Jeju Island was a genocide by Syngman Rhee and the US and Syngman Rhee was a expat military dictator that went to princeton and was handselected by the US to be that military dictator. He seems not looked very favorably in even south korea

The Netflix Airbender isn't that bad. It was a solid 7.5/10 for me. Better than Netflix's Witcher seasons.

Watching Shogun. I have to laugh at the fact that Lord Torunaga, who is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, is all like "ohhh no I don't want to be Shogun, I just want to protect the old Taiko's heir I don't want power I'm just a little noble guy." It's so funny because Ieyasu was a HUGE bastard, incredibly power hungry, very cunning about it, and gave zero shits about Toyotomi Hideyoshi's kid.
