Northern California is a straight clusterfuck right now, and I'm in a relatively rural area so it might be awhile before I get my power back. What do yinz do to pass the time aside from doomscroll and shitpost?

Edit: Just to give you all an idea about how bad it is right now. Rual Northern California towns are much smaller than a lot of people think, so a lot of those outages are entire towns.

Surf. Jerk off.

Kill cops (no cameras).

i remember about 10 or 12 years ago the power in my neighborhood went out for a night, so my family took the dog out for a walk. Seeing everyone outside, candles lit everywhere and neighbors chattering with each other was probably the only time i felt a generic sense of community. I fucking hate the suburbs

Not to diminish your troubles, i mean i never suffered through what you guys are going through :meow-hug:

Run around with a torch pretending I'm in a survival horror game

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

I'm gonna run around without a torch and staple random ass drawings of a grotesque horror owl to trees for you to find :sicko-yes:

I cannot stress enough how dark it is here right now. I still have 5g because I'm close to the hospital but aside from that, the blackout is going for literal miles in every direction from me.

Look at the stars, might be your only chance to see them

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago

Can't see them through all the clouds. But also I'm 45 minutes from being at like 7k feet in the Sierras and miles away from another human so I see the stars all the time.

One time the power went out during the evening in the summer, and literally everyone in the neighborhood was outside doing activities. It was like the first and only time I saw so many people just walking, playing in their yards, going to the park, and talking to neighbors and random strangers from the neighborhood. It was like I was living in a whole different country. I live in the US for context.

TV is mind control

I honestly wish we could get rid of screens. I'm as much of an introvert as anyone but this shit is getting crazy.

Arts and crafts are fun

Read a book, listen to any audio book

Go for a walk

Place your hand on top of a candle to see if you can still feel

Do some photography

Sex

I don't recommend puzzles but candle light

390,000 people without power, apparently. Yes: that is the correct number of zeroes.

Yeah, PG&E (being the west-coast private owner of all the electrical grid infrastructure, so other local power generation companies—even when they exist—have to lease the lines from them) of course keeps getting soothing "It's OK BBY, you don't have to fix anything, and we'll absolve you of the murders you've done and most if not all liability too" from the completely capitalist-captured courts and Public Utilities Commission. It's no surprise that their shit can't deal with a little intense (but completely predictable) wind and rain. But at least it's wet enough right now that this time it isn't that they set a quarter of the state on fire. Silver linings!

I like to strum my guitar and walk my dog.

Then when I'm done with that I sit in my computer chair rocking back and forth.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Dance in the dark? (be careful not to bump into things)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Depending on how long this goes, I might give it a try. it's better than my old crystal lady neighbor who just told me she's been meditating the whole time so far.

When the power went off a couple weeks ago I took it as a chance to read a book I hadn’t in ạ while

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Time to catch up on sleep that you've neglected for so long. Yes, I'm projecting.

It's a really good opportunity to light some candles and play some tabletop games. The mood fits D&D rather well.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I need to make some more friends in the neighborhood because unfortunately its too wild out there right now for me to go anywhere or have anyone over.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Read and sleep. And game on portable consoles.

I like to take a walk outside when the power is out, but if the Sun has already set, I'd just go to sleep early.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

battery powered flashlights/string lights

charge up any portable chargers u own

Camping rocket stove if u absolutely have to cook (stove is $20, fuel is $5)/boil water

freeze a cup of water, put a coin on top. When the power goes out u can check if the coin fell down to see if your stuff thawed out.

I'm up in Humboldt and feeling thankful to have power. If it goes out I have a small generator I can use to power the fridge, TV, internet etc. We also have a small propane heater we can use inside to keep warm.

I have a little battery powered camplight that I use to read books.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

It's not a question of like. I dream of the internet and wait for the power to come back on.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Not really much to do if it's late at night and you're at home in your apartment tower on the 20th floor, which has been the cass for 90% of my experiences with power outages.

Can't read because it's dark. Shouldn't play games/watch videos on phone especially if already on low charge. Can't sleep because it's only 23:00.

So all roads instantly lead to "jerk off".
