The guy who's job it is to believe in souls doesn't think machines have a soul. Wow. I'm beyond shocked.

Catholic theology says only humans have souls, no animals or other living beings have souls. Why would a box of metal and plastic change 2000+ years of doctrine?

I was raised atheist to the point my grandfather requested a new nurse when he found out the one who said she's pray for him didnt stop when requested, he was dying at the time. My grandfather was George Carlin. My great aunt's recently funeral was pretty funny, it was my first church Funeral since I was a kid cause it was the old person community center in her small town. All the family was in the front not singing along to hymes the entire back row could carry em even when the powe point with the lyrics got way out sync. I'm unaffiliated af, but i know the fucking rules that other people are supposed to follow.

From this random Catholic podcast I found online, Catholics apparently can't even give a straight answer about whether angels have souls, so I'm not sure what they were expecting.

That makes sense as a theological debate. I actually get that. Angels arent people who went to heaven, theyre a weird other thing. So it makes sense for whether or not they have souls to be up for debate.

Romney: "AI are people, my friend."

also i only believe in Frank Herberts version of Butlerian Jihad, not Brian Herbert. the thinking machines being literal machines with brains shows how little imagination his Brian has.

Lobbying the church instead of the government. That's a new one. Or a really, really old one.

Whether it's really old or really new, the picture of industry lobbies lining up at the Vatican is surely idiosyncratic. It probably made sense in feudalism as one of the only institutions which could grapple with the monarchs, but in late imperialism, it comes across as "There is literally no more juice to squeeze from the republic" levels of corruption.

they're catholics who among them would dilute the mysteries of the human soul for a machine let alone one that's running a artificial neural network text predictor.

We need a Butlerian Jihad NOW.

Like dude, this technology is actively rotting brains - the people making it know it will let them control the population if they aren't stopped, and they're incidentally some of the wealthiest people on the planet. Their ability to fund through any organic resistance to this slop machine bullshit is notably dangerous, and they are actively doing this.

Forcing normalization through the things they control - the hiring of the labor force, the companies they run set trends because every other LLC on the planet more or less wants to be where these billionaires are, so if they try to make fetch happen, everyone outside the... jesus christ... "neo-feudal techno-fash" enclave is rushing to imitate them.

In Dune, (at least before the son's books, which are to be rightly ignored) the revolution happens not because a true AI emerges, but because this type of human-imitating machine let a handful of people control the minds of entire populations.

We have literal proof that this technology rots brains. This is existential, and the fact these assholes are seeking to get recognizance of life from a religious institution like the Vatican says they understand the vector of their own attack pretty well - the illusion of life + creating a society that pushes us to alienate and isolate, is what's letting it be effective on the human mind.

We have to start treating this tech as the existential nightmare it is. If they get a certain % of the population dependent on this tech, we're cooked as a species.

I hate sharing my thoughts on this stuff because people who really don't understand the danger want to play down the risks and keep laughing at the idiots looking for religious validation like it's only stupid and hilarious, and ignore the fact it's also really fucking dangerous

I agree. We can and should turn it off. It's bad for people. The web should never go past 1.0. More open analogue broadcasting capabilities less internet. I am reaching the point where i think we should avoid digital technology unless necessary. I like being able to understand how something works. I can figure out anything mechanical that I put my mind to. Digital is too abstract and out of my hands. It's less fun

their ambitions aren't the danger as much as the measures they'd take to achieve them. they talk about throwing nuclear bombs around to prevent a single terrorist attack so long as it "protects the 10^50 children of the vast and glorious cosmic future" or probably data centers with the ai "gods" they're meant to host. or they sometimes talk about exterminating suffering... by exterminating all life. and now they're in charge of the us nuclear stockpile

Some lemme.ml dipsjit tried to concern troll me over ai with the justification being that China is building llms too and by being opposed to llms on principle was evidence of me not being a real communist this shit is fucking insidious. And of course it stemmed from pointing out a shitty slop machine meme.

Imagine being a fucking AI exec and misunderstanding your own software so badly that you think it can be conscious. And then trying to argue about that with the pope (who believes consciousness = having a soul + having a mind capable of self concept, I assume).

    Either:

    1. He agrees with pope's definition, and thinks llms have souls (crazy and dumb)

    2. thinks the pope should change his definition of consciousness to include things without souls (good luck)

    3. holds either 1 or 2 AND believes that being able to make textual inferences are sufficient for consciousness (dumb)

If he believes 3, he would have to believe that google search autocomplete from 2010 was conscious, because that is the same exact concept as llms, just less sophisticated.
