Because all I've got is Kevin Spacey.

People talk of this like it was a huge problem that destroyed lives. So I feel like there should be plenty of names.

  • Bill Nye

Crime: he said trans people are ok and vouched by science. So he was successfully cancelled for thoughtcrime.

  • Anita Sarkeesian

Crime: saying illegal opinions and challenging some sacred cows on the internet. She’s the OG victim of cancel culture and it’s ok because she told the truth instead of what’s popular.

We’re the actual victims of cancel culture, but we don’t complain because we know eons of pro-west propaganda means our ideas are not going to be well received. Even saying basic lib shit can make you feel like Huey Freeman causing everyone to panic with the truth.

[-] huf@hexbear.net 48 points 2 weeks ago

yeah, the real cancel culture is all the black panther and BLM leaders getting shot, and things of that nature.

the campus protesters against genocide being mass arrested, charged for terrorism, kicked out of university, put on no-hire blacklists, etc.

Tara Reade, for daring to mess with the Sleepy Joe

[-] OffSeasonPrincess@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago

99% of actual victims of "cancel culture" trans women who got targeted by harassment campaigns for rly minor shit. Isabel Fall who was mentioned in another comment is a v good example, if u want more theres basically everyone targeted by kiwifarms

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Conta Points excluded from this tally.

[-] OffSeasonPrincess@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Shes like the only one w enough money, TME clout and connections to avoid it

[-] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 34 points 2 weeks ago

Isabel Fall is the only one that comes to mind.

Oh, and probably Jeremy Corbyn too. Bullshit antisemitism accusations hit his political career pretty hard.

Kevin Spacey is doing pretty well when you compare him to James Somerton lol. ofc that's hardly a typical example of cancel culture either, given that it had zero to do with SA allegations and he instead got wiped from public existence for plagiarism, which is very easy to prove conclusively in a longform youtube video. But i feel i need to bring it up because it's an actual example of that exceptionally rare thing where somebody's reputation gets totally, irreparably obliterated from one day to the next. Guy only exists as a punchline for tumblr posts nowadays.

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 24 points 2 weeks ago

Oh yeah James Somerton might actually be the person who was genuinely the most cancelled. As in he did a thing that wasn't just a serius crime and as a result of it no longer had a career.

[-] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago

Graham Linehan, but that was very self-inflicted. If he hadn't been such a whiny shithead on twitter, his cancellation may well have blown over. But he simply couldn't stop posting, so now his career is pretty much over, luckily

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

It's always self inflicted as far as I can tell. These people chose to be shitheads.

Kind of the same story with Glup Shitto Muscle Mommy Gina Carano. She got fired from Disney and had to go take acting gigs working for Ben Shapiro, and when that didn't pan out, she went back to MMA for a one-off match against Ronda Rousey. I guess Disney were cowards and she got a settlement for the wrongful termination suit that she brought against them, so not that effective of a #canceling at the end of the day, because I'm sure she made bank getting her face kicked in by Rousey.

Just to name a few.

There's the actor Jonathan Majors if that counts. He hasn't been in anything since 2023. But that's also not an instance of outcry against his opinions or politics or whatever, but because it turned out he's assaulted multiple women.

I hate how vague the term cancel culture is. Reactionairies use the term to mean anything from a person on twitter getting 5 negative comments, to someone getting fired from a newspaper because they were having an affair. It just means "when there are consequences to something I think is ok." For a while it seemed like the primary victims of cancel culture were white professors and conservative journalists who kept saying slurs and getting reprimanded by their employers. But the way reactionairies talk about it is some kind of 1984 panopticon of groupthink that violently destroys people for arbitrary reasons.

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

Spacey and Majors are why I said this

Also all the people brought up when discussing "cancelling" did fine and were criminals

[-] Tiocfaidhcaisarla@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I'll have you know Majors is acting in the Ben Shapiro production studio, at least until his defenestration a couple months ago

Somehow I don't think the people who worry about rich "canceled" abusers, care as much about rehabilitation of just regular convicts who served their term.

[-] MarxMadness@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Louis CK fits here, although I don't recall if his misconduct was criminal or just "would get you fired from every job."

[-] microfiche@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

How's Charlie Rose doing?

List of people who were actually "cancelled"

  • ...
[-] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

Colin Kaepernick, and, uh... dunno who else.

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

Bill Cosby got cancelled by the US government - briefly. He got the charges vacated and ended up paying civil suits but he was selling out shows right up until he went to jail and low key I think of he ever makes good on those plans to do a comeback tour I think he'd sell them out again.

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

Jeff Epstein

but anyway, my guess is the meaning is purposely ambiguous so it can suit the needs of the reactionary making the complaint.... but probably the most reasonable working definition is that the "cancelled" person is not being offered development or appearance/promotional contracts by the larger, legacy media groups that want to pay lip service, at least, to representation/inclusivity and also being (rightfully) targeted by cultural critics.

anyway, cultural hegemony aside, i think part of developing media literacy is accepting that the landscape is less and less a monolith as we separate from the old paradigm. to be clear, i do not see this as an improvement, because capitalism is the force underlying the changes in technology and power/ownership. its more like the old system imploded and now new rats are growing fat on the bloated carcasses.

in this way "cancelling" is just a new name for being cast into a new brand. everyone and no one is cancelled, because anyone can cancel anyone else for anything. its only as effective, paradoxically, as how many continually pay attention to the cancelled.

michael richards, tho not like his career post seinfeld was great

Roman Polanksy, R Kelly and Harvey Weinstein.

Roman Polanksy

Not even a little bit. Entire countries are conspiring on his behalf.

[-] doubtingtammy@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

That's why being cancelled isn't that serious.

I don't think being tried for a crime counts as "canceling". "Canceling" is a social phenomena of the masses getting angry at someone and demanding they be removed. The state punishing people for laws they broke doesn't count, even if the state had to be pressured into doing so

[-] doubtingtammy@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

They were canceled before the legal consequences. Being canceled is a relatively mild social consequence. It always has been.

[-] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

i only know who don imus is because of that incident

[-] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

The funny thing is how many of these people just sucked and their career would've never lasted anyway. Then they found the chud grift to stay afloat.

But sure, Kevin Sorbo totally would've been the next action movie leading man if he hadn't been ostracized for his views.

[-] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I think one of the main people they'd point to is that one woman from the Mandilorian.

I don't remember the story nor care to look it up, but she got canned for saying some shit. They'll have a dozen examples of shit like that.

Then they'll take it smaller scale where they're popping off on Twitter then someone snitches to their boss and they get fired. They'll probably have Dave Chappelle, JK Rowling, and Louis CK for good measure.

That's sort of frequency they're operating on

[-] RoabeArt@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

I think she was saying stuff about how the vaccines are worse than the Holocaust and made negative remarks against trans people.
