Last week, the Rutherford County steering committee met to discuss banning all books that may violate the new ordinance, which resulted in public backlash. “When have the people who ban books ever been the good guys?” local activist Keri Lambert exclaimed at the meeting last week.

Four books that possess LGBTQ themes have been removed under the new rule. These include, "Flamer, Let's Talk About It", Queerfully and Wonderfully Made", and "This book is Gay."

The board also made changes to the library card system, which now categorizes books into certain age groups. The new mechanic that will go into effect next year will ensure children and teens are only able to check out books that correlate with their age group, unless they are given parental permission.

The new regulations regarding books has worried library director Rita Shacklett who in August voiced concerns about children having access to books they need for class. According to her, many books considered classics in high school English, like "To Kill a Mockingbird," is now considered an adult book, according to The New Republic.

The county steering committee hasn't taken aim at books like "A Song of Ice and Fire series," which depicts multiple instances of heterosexual sexual conduct. Murfreesboro's new ordinance is a small piece of a larger effort to target LGBTQ rights in Tennessee, which was the first state to attempt a ban on drag shows. The law was overturned in court.

In March, Tennessee lawmakers passed a bill, allowing people the right to refuse to perform a marriage if they disagree with the couple's sexual orientation. The bill was introduced to the Senate but deferred until next year.

Every now and again, I see folks who roll their eyes at Pride and call it a 90s relic.

And then I see shit like this and absolutely understand why a hundred dudes in rainbow colored assless chaps parading their way down main street is a revolutionary act.

If you refuse to accept the happy assimilationists you're gonna have to face the ass immolationists.

But(t) oh no, support our foreign wars because the bad guys are homophobes or whatever

Murfreesboro is not an urban area, but it's notably the site of a university, which i think makes this more impactful for more people. not that it'd be fine in a rural town, but it's a bit more insidious than just some rural town of 20 hicks in the middle of nowhere deciding to do a little performative homophobia. this will affect far more people.

It’s actually a fairly large town (150k pop.) that sits on the exurbs of Nashville. Much more like an actual urban city that some podunk exit ramp town in the middle of nowhere.

The duty of every revolutionary is to make revolution. We know that in America and throughout the world the revolution will be victorious. But revolutionaries cannot sit in the doorways of their homes to watch the corpse of imperialism pass by.  -Fidel Castro

OK electoralists... what is Biden doing about this? What is he doing about ANY of the anti-gay and anti-trans BS that is being passed across the country? Are we just tokens for you to berate into voting for you every 4 years?!?

With how much dumber the American population gets every year I am sure you will see more laws like this soon

This shit is depressing. Even if it isn't explicitly outlawed, there is a tacit suppression of public affection for fear of reprisal.

I've been with my partner (M/M) for over a decade and we have never held hands in public, much less kissed. Even hugs require a quick glance for observers first. It's sad to be with our straight friends who have no reservations about doing that stuff. It sounds silly, but it definitely devalues my relationship to me.

[-] [email protected] 21 points 2 years ago

It's fucking weird and sad. I've been with my partner for over a decade too. When we got together, we were a "straight" couple, then about 5 years ago I realized I'm trans and have now transitioned, so we no longer look like a straight couple. We don't really hold hands in public anymore. Also, strangers call us "friends" now, when before my transition strangers would always assume we were a couple. Homophobia is fucking rampant and it suuuuuucks!

[-] [email protected] 12 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Congrats on the transition, but yeah that's awful. I've never seen "both sides" so to speak, but that has to be even more weird for you. I feel you though. People will make small talk when we're out somewhere and occasionally ask if we're brothers, particularly when we show up at places that I assume two dudes don't usually go together. There's just that half second pause I do where I glance at my partner and my heart fucking breaks before I say "just roommates". Shit's depressing and it has been my entire adult life. At least we have parental support on both sides.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago

It's really awful you guys have to hide who you are like that, I'm so sorry. Society is really cruel to non cishet people, it sucks so much. At least you have parental support, that helps. meow-hug

This treatbrained inconsistency among cishet chuds (especially because of how much gratuitously and repetitively narrated sexual violence, including underaged, is in that series) doesn't surprise me at all and I kind of wish it did. doomer

rural town

Murfreesboro is the sixth biggest city in TN at around 160,000. Rutherford County has over 350,000 people. It's a huge sprawling suburb of Nashville.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

It's a beautiful place too. Such a shame that on the inside it's so fucking ugly.
