New Zealand has announced plans to eradicate feral cats by 2050, as part of efforts to protect the country’s biodiversity.

Speaking to Radio New Zealand on Thursday, conservation minister Tama Potaka said that feral cats are “stone cold killers” and would be added to the country’s Predator Free 2050 list, which aims to eradicate those animals that have a negative impact on species such as birds, bats, lizards and insects.

Cats had previously been excluded from the list, which includes species such as stoats, ferrets, weasels, rats and possums, but Potaka used the interview to announce a U-turn.

Not rare in this area. New Zealand is one of the only countries that takes native species conservation and invasive species control seriously.

Only gonna take them a quarter century tho lol

Is it possible to eliminate the population over time via spay/neuter methods or is that not viable in NZ's case?

[-] Hermes@hexbear.net 23 points 2 months ago

Too much cost/not enough scale. And it would be hard to get all of them. Also, as mentioned in the article, if they are left alive they kill native wildlife, so they really shouldn't be left alive.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 20 points 2 months ago

what if they trap them all and uhhhh put them on some island somewhere and that's the cats' island now

[-] isame@hexbear.net 21 points 2 months ago

They can have Epstein's old joint.

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

I think the ecological damage resulting from doing that would outweigh any moral benefits of not just killing them.

Dumping all the feral cats in New Zealand into Curtis Sliwa's apartment while he's not home

CW: harm to animalsSadly no, there's really no humane solution that can outpace their population growth. Unfortunately culling is the lesser of two evils, cats are apex predators in these environments and they're a significant contributor to the extinction of native fauna. It should have been a priority a long time ago.

It's horrible. It isn't even practical to shoot them so they get baited and (IMO) we don't even have a good solution for baiting them since the agent most commonly used also kills other (native) mammals and dissolves into waterways very easily. Plus it's a really unpleasant death.

I'm surprised there isn't a viral option like there has been for feral rabbits, but I guess that was a pretty miserable death too.

other (native) mammals

Which are 3 species of bats, 1 of which has not had a confirmed sighting since 1960's!

Learned this like 2 days ago, odd that it became relevant on HB. And they said pub trivia nights are a waste of time and money

New Zealand is committing cat genocide. Why? I believe the answer is clear when you consider people's reactions towards cats. Cats are widely considered to be some of the cutest animals, which should not be harmed in any way. If they were to be harmed, much less genocided, the entire world would be up in arms against this. This would be the perfect cover-up for worse crimes, such as white genocide in South Africa, in which New Zealand is complicit. By genociding cats, or even just threatening to, they are in reality announcing their intention to double-down in their efforts to eradicate the white population of South Africa. More than ever, it is important to go against the mainstream narrative and call these crimes out for what they are.

I was thinking "have it it boys! kill as many as you like, no questions asked" possibly with a new tourism campaign to appeal to sicko trophy hunters.

But I suppose in the interest of a finding a nice healthy efficient market solution they are obliged to entertain submissions from the MIC.

the only reason I'm letting this neighborhood cat stay outside is because I guess she's one of my neighbor's cats or something, idk, but she's started coming up to my porch to be petted and beg for food

she's super cute and she does the same little trilling chirrup sounds my brother's cat does when she's getting petted

[-] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 months ago

I wonder if they've had a struggle session about this

[-] vritrahan@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 months ago

If it is morally justified to cull cats like this, it is also morally justified to cull humans.

[-] Wheaties@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Luckily for you, Hexbear doesn't do downvotes. Have this instead downbear

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
