advertising should be banned

[-] sictransitgloria@hexbear.net 84 points 6 months ago

once I told someone I never see ads because I have adblock everywhere and they asked me 'how do you know what to buy?'

I didn't know how to respond

'how do you know what to buy?'

wtf

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 18 points 6 months ago

That fucking line.

IIRC someone somewhere said that Amerikkka is a pig nation with pig people. And here is a prime example. The piggies actually love their slop!

I'm housesitting for my Mom this week, and it's a real novelty to see advertising. It's honestly more entertaining than most of the TV shows. Outside of her house, I haven't seen an ad in years.

[-] Parzivus@hexbear.net 22 points 6 months ago

Watching the news with my parents and seeing ICE ads on broadcast TV was an eye opener

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 11 points 6 months ago

ICE ads on broadcast....

God has grown tired of us...

It's so weird going to someone else's house and seeing ads. These people don't even notice that a third of the slop they're exposing themselves to is just ads, and not even good, convincing or well-made ones. Ever been to someone's house and they always have the TV on at low volume, ads and all? They can't even be alone with their thoughts in their own house when other people are around to talk to.

[-] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 15 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Yeah, I've been to my parents' house cringe

trying to imagine what it's like to lack any semblance of an inner life like that. it must be so bleak to be that person

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 11 points 6 months ago

sadness-abysmal

CW: Suicidal languageThat line produced this response in my brain. "Because of what you just said to me, I now know the only thing I'll ever need to buy again is one bullet". Please know, I'm not actually suicidal. I'm just very morbid and sometimes not a fun person to be around irl.

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago

People actually get excited for ads. “Hey poors! Money please!” Actually excites people.

Every time I see an ad I die a little on the inside especially if they try to be “funny”.

“HoW dO yOu KnOw WhAt To BuY?”

Oh my fucking God….wealth is wasted on the wealthy. Why are you enjoying all the slop porky is selling you? Porky doesn’t even buy things. Income inequality is bad in no small part because porky doesn’t buy into his own consoom product bullshit. Like, first of all, how do they even have money to buy things?

So much of the economy is selling ads for things hardly anyone seems to be buying.

"subsidize costs"

Costs for the capitalists, not for the consumer.

[-] sgtlion@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago

Yeah. Nobody seems to understand when I say that companies only do this shit because it makes consumers spend more money, not less

[-] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago

Unfair to the payOR, not to the payEE.

[-] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 8 points 6 months ago

I mean it's literally their best effort to pass the cost on to the consumer.

[-] kleeon@hexbear.net 24 points 6 months ago

Finally. I love finding out about new exciting products with affordable prices!

[-] bigpharmasutra@hexbear.net 24 points 6 months ago

I've spent my entire adult life attempting to avoid advertisements, all the way back to the original Tivo, and now these useless cocksuckers think I'm going to put up with this dogshit all of a sudden? I'd rather go back to a flip phone.

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 27 points 6 months ago

Agree. But cocksucker as an insult? Come on dude, do you not appreciate getting head? 😔 Smdh

[-] XxFemboy_Stalin_420_69xX@hexbear.net 26 points 6 months ago

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 15 points 6 months ago

Also paying for the data that the ads are using

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 20 points 6 months ago

some smartphones

For now, until they force it on everyone and offer a $20/month plan to remove them.

[-] Champoloo@hexbear.net 17 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

In a couple of years maybe.

Pay 50$ to use your OS without ads, and an extra 5$ to remove preinstalled apps.

[-] CarbonConscious@hexbear.net 16 points 6 months ago

I'm not sure it will take that long; Kindles already work on this model.

I remember a couple of years ago Nothing was a company that supposedly brought some fresh new ideas to the smartphone market. Guess we found out what the ideas were.

Nothing's post was upfront about the "razor-thin margins" the company has to operate on to keep up with major players like Apple and Google, and said that both Lock Glimpse and "pre-installed partner apps" would be a way to continue to hit the mid-budget price point it's become known for.

Wow, this just keeps happening under capitalism for some reason! Consolidation until only a few of the largest players remain.

[-] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago

Nothing is just iphone with led's.

Maybe it’s time to look at custom ROMs or Linux phones. It’s been a few years. How are they faring?

[-] EatPotatoes@hexbear.net 9 points 6 months ago

Ok that’s 0.5% of phone users sorted

[-] sexywheat@hexbear.net 9 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

There are a few (very small) makers of linux phones. I think there's a new "Ubuntu Touch" device out now. Pinephone also makes a linux device, if they're still in business that is.

The problem is that linux phones don't have the apps available, nor the development support to maintain them. The whole reason smart phones are useful is because of apps that have large user bases and functionality. Although, I supposed you could just do everything in the browser.

My advice is to take the SD/SIM card out of your phone, throw it into the ocean, and just use a flip phone instead.

Linux phones are still a long ways out. I daily drove a PinePhone with Arch for roughly 2 years, honestly wouldn't recommend.

There are some pretty neat custom ROM's. The peak is still GrapheneOS, which for now requires Google Pixel devices. DivestOS (RIP) was really good, and supported a ton of devices. The other ROM's tend to be less good, for a variety of reasons.

Nothing's whole thing is minimalism and this kind of messes with that aesthetic, ads and partner apps are the kind of thing I would expect from a really low-end manufacturer
