On this day in 1912, a riot broke out in Grabow, Louisiana when gunfire was exchanged between organizing lumber workers and private gunmen hired by the Galloway Lumber Company, just one event in the Louisiana-Texas Lumber War. The clash left three union workers and one company gunman dead, wounding an estimated fifty more.

The event took place in the context of workers in the sawmill town of Grabow joining the Brotherhood of Timber Workers (shown), a branch of the Lumber Workers Industrial Union (LWIU), itself affiliated with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

On July 7th, 1912, the union workers held a series of rallies at several different company towns, including Bon Ami and Carson, alongside Grabow.

The group that went to Grabow, around 200 people, spontaneously decided to hold a rally with several speeches - labor leader Arthur L. Emerson spoke on top of a wagon to roughly 25 non-union men, plus the additional union men who had come with him.

Shots began between these workers and a group of four others, including Galloway Lumber owner John Galloway, in the local mill office, all of whom had later been found to be drinking before the incident. It is not known for certain which group fired first. Three union men were killed alongside one member of the private company security force. Approximately 50 more were wounded.

Over the next few days, more than more than 60 workers were taken into custody by police. Although the mill owner himself was arrested, he was released without charges soon afterward. Sixty-five of the timber workers' group were brought up on charges ranging from inciting a riot to murder.

The IWW worked to aid the incarcerated workers, with "Big Bill" Haywood fundraising for their legal fund. The trial lasted until November 8th, and its jury returned a not guilty verdict for all of the union men. All of those arrested were set free.

Although they had limited success in Louisiana, the LWIU successfully organized later, winning an eight-hour day and vastly improved working conditions in the Pacific Northwest after a 1917 strike. Today, there is a historical marker at the site of the riot, located on what is now the property of DeRidder Airport, Louisiana.

Woke up hating

“Prompt injection” is such a fucking stupid term because half the time it’s just “IGNORE X AND Y” in the LLM input. Yet, people are pretending it’s a “dangerous” LLM exploit. No, it’s proof that there is no thinking happening and I have to deal with a collective societal psychosis over a word calculator

I hate it here y’all. I truly hate it here

____ injection has a history in CS, there are webpages that have plain text in the URL you can just edit and that's a (trivial) URL injection shrug-outta-hecks

Its pretty funny that one of them is called the "grandma exploit" and people have been able to get corporate products to say cock and balls.

Anyway, you dont have to do any of this if you just run a model locally and not be dependent on SaSS products all the time.

This is a bit of Twitter return to form, so much of Twitter recently has been just nazi rallies that I kind of miss when it was just sub-“what’s the deal with airline food” level observations wrapped with (white people)/men be like.

i wonder what the ancients would think of instant ramen? i know i consider this stuff to be pretty much a miracle. imagine if the ancient greeks made hermes or someone the god of microwavable noodles.

they'd be more impressed by the extrusion. you could make dry pasta, cook it, and dry it out again in any society that invented bread. also you still have to make a fire and boil water on that fire so it's probably way less labor savings per serving.

if they ate it they might die of sodium shock.

October last year. I tapped the back of a truck and it busted my bumper. I go back to driving without further analysis, the hit made my hood go loose and smashed my windshield😵‍💫

So I ziptie it down with like 4 zipties and I go back on the road, the zipties break and my windshield smashes.

So. I put like 8 zipties, thinking no way will this break. Then my windshield smashes again, this time completely cracking it up.

Im a big dumbass for this, one of my biggest problems is never thinking the worst thing that could happen can definitely happen

My dad aligned the hood back up, I just kept driving with a fucked up windshield since the roof was badly dented. This fix was like 5000 dollars to replace the roof.

Last week because of all the rain and heat, out of nowhere the glass up top started to sink. Next thing you know theres a big hole up on top and this happened like overnight. I used flex tape to cover it up and keep water from getting in the car. I was freaking out about it cuz i needed to get a car asap because who knows when the glass finally collapses on itself.

I literally found and bought a 4000 dollar prius with 160k miles the next day. Haha

Moral of the story. Make sure you always have a couple hundred on you for a tow truck. When the accident happened I didn’t have a dollar. Or use more than 8 zipties to hold a hood down. Or just keep a hammer in the car.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

This is why I always have 9 zip ties in my ass

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

That's a good deal on a Prius with that mileage. At least it would be in my area.

A Prius is a great high mileage car, parts are dirt cheap. Even the batteries can be had for cheap

Watched Ballerina and damn keanu reeves cant really deliver lines lol

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

yea

He's never been good at that. He has precisely one speaking cadence and facial expression and it's damn near impossible to get him to do anything else.

For some reason, though, I have a huge soft spot for him. I've watched most of the movies he's in, usually more than once, and I love him in them. Neo, of course, is his best work, but I also truly love Constantine and John Wick. I'm finally playing Cyberpunk2077 and I really like him as Johnny Silverhand too.

I haven't seen Ballerina yet, but I'm absolutely planning to, and I'm guessing I'll like Keanu's performance in it, despite the fact that it will, of course, be a standard Keanu performance, by which I mean not actually very good.

If humans are animals to eldars there must be an eldar conservationist who supports humans.

Sometimes I feel very dissatisfied with where I'm at in life and then I'll hear something from a friend or friend of a friend and feel like I really have my shit together and need to be less hard on myself.

decided to turn my phone off for a day or two and dusted off my bookshelf

grabbed a chomsky book from my left-curious era off the shelf (profits over people) and damn not just is he annoying to read but it's so lib brained and the anti-communism just oozes through every page. love how he mostly just calls communist movements "radical nationalism" i guess as a "commies are actually right wing"

going to have to order a new copy of blackshirts and reds (which i only had on audio book before)

maybe then i can get to hardcore theory but i want physical books not digital. also nervous about leaving a paper trail but whatever we are all surely on a priority kill list anyways

Just curious, has anybody played Bendy and the Ink Machine? I'm probably gonna pick it up because it looks neat, was wondering if others enjoyed it

[-] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago

When I worked at Rent-a-center I had a delivery to a nursing home. The roommate of the guy I was delivering to was lying in bed painfully moaning as I brought the TV in.

As I'm hooking the TV up the moaning kept getting more and more intense in waves. Then the guy ripped a massive fart, sighed, and then went silent.

Comrades. I fear the maoists are right and all drugs and alcohol are bad. Everytime Instagram gives me a add for some fun looking shit to do it is in Utah. The implications here is that because they don't drink or do drugs they have to find other ways to have fun. Plus, that shit looks like it would be rad as hell to do high.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

"Of course drugs are bad for society, just look at the counter example of the mormons" statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.

I have a dog who doesn't like the rain. She doesn't put up much of a fuss most of the time, but she expresses her dissatisfaction by squinting. When she does we call her Squintin Tarentino.
