It's homeless shelters. It's insane asylums.

i wonder why the mentally ill people become homeless and then are forced to live on public transportations. ah well, must be part of the nature of public transportation.

"public transportation is garbage because [thing specific to the US and other less-developed countries with bad infrastructure]" is one of my favorite US brainworms.

"i don't understand why anyone would want to play sports, my shoelaces are tied together so i trip and fall every time i try to run, checkmate commies smuglord"

porky-scared-flipped Kids taking public transit?! Don't you know that's unsafe because of policies I deliberately created?

[-] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

In winter the only spaces that are warm and publically accessable are the transit stops and bus shelters, so of course people with no where else to go would use them to stay warm and not freeze to death.

Can you guess what the city did to "fix" this?

They renovated the train stations to remove the warm sheltered waiting areas in favour of semi-enclosed glass waiting areas that technically have heaters but they're open to the elements so they don't do shit. They've also removed bus shelters and even benches at bus stops, and they make sure to have the pigs do sweeps of the transit system to remove "undesirables". I haven't paid for the subway since my university pass expired but since I look like a cracker they just glance at my (empty) card and move on

In Denver they don't even have heaters or partial enclosures, the stations are fully exposed with maybe some roofs on pillars

It can get down to -40 here so they have to pretend to care about the cold, but I can tell you from personal experience the heaters they do have don't do jack even when it's warmer

Slightly related:

I know it's rancid propaganda with a cute face but the children in "Old Enough!" are taking commuter boats, trains and buses before learning how to read.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

Wow, how is it propaganda? I have heard about this show but I've never seen it.

IIRC the japanese government funded it so people would go "awww, let's have a child" and increase the birth rates

Or perhaps I bite the onion and fell for a ¿racist? shitpost

It's a good show regardless

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

lol not sure how thats rancid but okay

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

You are right, is not rancid, the intentions kinda are

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Eh I mean Japan is experiencing a huge decline in birthrate if I remember correctly, I think this kind of propaganda is completely harmless. Now if they were like “keep Japan Japanese and marry a Japanese wife/husband and have little Japanese babies” I’d agree with you.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago

I think from most perspectives on the left it's due to Japan trying to coerce more births but does not address how they do not have the societal or financial support structures for said births (i.e. the Japanese work cultural literally forces parents to work endlessly unable to see their kid). Think American latchkey kids of the 90s but even worse when Japanese people contemplate what having a kid would look like (also most are just burnt out millennials wanting to enjoy what little free time they have).

No idea what's their immigration policies

Anyways, judging by all the "Tokio micro-apartments" youtube videos, if I wanted my population to increase I'd give them free decently-sized houses, that kind of stuff

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Japan's immigration policies are horrendous. They happily accept whites, but treat any immigrants from neighboring countries like shit. That's if you can get citizenship in the first place.

There is an epidemic, for example, of children born to Japanese fathers and non-Japanese mothers who can't get citizenship or child support because Japan doesn't give these things by default:

I don't have stats for this but I'd assume trains and buses are probably the safest method for your kids to go to school. Violent crime in a crowded space where you can't immediately get away is excessively rare. Getting injured or killed in a traffic accident is way, way, way more likely to happen.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

Doesnt help how the media reinforces the opposite.

Violent crime happens on a train: media talks about it for weeks

Someone dies horrifically in a car crash: just another tuesday

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

cars have more rights than people in america, up to and including the right to kill people

[-] [email protected] 19 points 1 week ago

Non American but I always took the bus or bike to school since I was like 10

[-] [email protected] 19 points 1 week ago

Non American and living in a place with a lot of petty crime, because of very high inequality... I would take the bus with my mom everywhere and started taking it by myself at around 12

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I walked, it was 10 minutes give or take

"Uhhh, my stop is right here"

gets off bus

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

I saw a lot of post threads with comments on Bluesky that where basically "I ride the subway and it's not perfect but..." or "I take the bus and I've seen some stuff on it but...". A lot of libs can't just say public transportation is good.
