-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

We're in the wrong timeline.

There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage.

God DAMN Steinbeck could write some words.

I finally read this book a year or two ago after putting it off because it was recommended by the same teacher who made us read a bunch of old slop. Honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read in my entire life. 100% should be on everyone’s reading list.

If you liked it and want another Steinbeck banger set in the Great Depression you should check out In Dubious Battle. For some reason it gets left out when The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men are mentioned, but it is my favorite of the three. It's about an apple pickers strike in California, and follows the communist organizers trying to lead it.

Looks like the audiobook comes to my library in like a week, what serendipitous timing, thanks for the recommendation!

I remember really liking East of Eden too, but think I was like 12 when I read it.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's a book that I personally learned to appreciate more over the years, and would also recommend to anyone

This was basically the titular quote from Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath", which largely is about the plight of tenant farmers during the dust bowl and great depression.

I'm getting more Ebenezer Scrooge vibes. Are there no prisons? Are there no work-houses?

Gruesome Gavin has a genuine, deep seated hatred of the homeless

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I wouldnt be suprised if Newsom is responsible for people going missing.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

Like in a “Has his thugs kidnap homeless people” way or a “Personally kidnapping and murdering homeless people with his own two hands” because either way yes

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 day ago

He knows exactly what suffering and death he's calling for when he does things like this. I believe the people here already know that, but it should always be clear that none of these politicians are acting out of ignorance when they advocate for shit like this.

[–] [email protected] 35 points 1 day ago

Worse than lackluster housing aid, no workers programs to get people back to work either so they can maybe become self sufficient. Horrible mental healthcare options, beyond the fully humanitarian reality that many homeless may need to be fully taken care for. If you fall down he just wants you to fuck off.

Can't even express how I feel about this asshole without fedposting, but the saddest thing is knowing just how mask off he is and how many other democrats really feel the exact same way.

Y'all don't quote me on this. You start out in 1954 by saying, "N*****, n*****, n*****." By 1968 you can't say "n*****"—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me—because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "N*****, n*****."

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 day ago
