Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

On this day in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion took place when a force of 1400 Cuban exiles, funded and led by the U.S., landed on the southwest coast of Cuba in a failed attempt at overthrowing the revolutionary Cuban government.

Covertly financed and directed by the U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the Cold War and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

The coup attempt came after the Cuban government expropriated property from American capitalists. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in March 1960 for use against Castro's government. With the aid of Cuban counter-revolutionaries, the CIA proceeded to organize an invasion.

On April 14th, 1961, a squadron of U.S. B-26 bombers camouflaged with Cuban insignias begin a two-day bombing campaign of Cuban airports, destroying a large portion of the Cuban air force.

On the night of April 17th, an invasion force of approximately 1400 Cuban exiles and CIA officers landed on the beach at Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. After a few days, the insurgents became overwhelmed by the Cuban army. President Kennedy refused to provide air support for the operation.

The invasion's defeat solidified Castro's role as a national hero and strengthened Cuba-Soviet relations. Several Cuban exiles and two Americans were executed upon capture. Over 1,000 prisoners were exchanged for humanitarian aid from the U.S. government.

Further proof of Julio Cabrera being correct on the FEA and each life being disqualified from being a moral agent. You can't even try to help out the bees without hurting someone (the bees in this case).

"The carrot and the stick" is a pretty lame metaphor. First of all, carrots are kind of meh. They're edible at least, unlike green beans, but hardly something I'd perceive as a bribe. Second of all, carrots are roots, which are basically just underground sticks. Something like "the blunt or the bludgeon" would make a lot more sense.

Took a job out of town for a few months for a huge pay increase and living expenses covered.

Already miss my family and i haven't left yet. Toddler says he's coming with me. I'm going to be close enough that it's reasonable to visit most weekends so i know it's not that bad but it's heart breaking

I'm thinking about logging out, permanently. I don't want to get got just for having the "wrong" beliefs.

Is anyone else feeling this way more and more?

I've heard that if you quit social media abruptly, it flags you as a risk to anyone who might be monitoring you. Is that true?

I literally just want to put my head down and ride this shitstorm out.

It is deeply embarrassing for metal guys that I still see posts like "them: I listen to just about everything

Me: puts on Dying Fetus

First off, metal guy, you also don't listen to a wide variety of music probably and you're aware of microgenres and obscure bands cause you're fairly exclusively into metal. Also it's always always ALWAYS something I heard for the first time when I was like 14 and fairly mainstream. Death metal isn't thar obscure of a genre. Like, at least pick a shitty gore grind band if you wanna do a shock value thing. And even then, metal just isn't the most extreme genre there is. I listen to Harsh noise and other incredibly abrasive experimental music all the damn time. You think you're cool cause you like different bands that write different songs which are faster and louder than most songs. I listen to feedback and people using construction equipment wrong Metal is the most normie extreme music and it isn't even close.

Currently standing in the most overfilled train I've ever been in. If the next one I'm going to be in is as full I'm just going to lay down and give up

update: train is totally overfilled and late but I got a seat so I can't complain

Been cooking more veggies like roasted cabbage and brussel sprouts (smaller cabbage) and I think it's been helping my mom out. Her knees been hurting so dieting is helping, taking the approach of getting full though by eating more veggies. Both of us got poor impulse control so restrictive diets are difficult but this is a good work around

What's the best one-volume collection of Lenin's most important writings that doesn't cost a fortune?

Most of his books are like 100 pages I feel like there should be more of these, like that 800ish page Marx Engels reader from the 70s printed on super thin paper.

There's one that's around 500 pages but cuts stuff like prefaces and the last chapter of What Is To Be Done, I don't want that
