Julius Nyerere, born on this day in 1922, was a socialist and anti-colonial Tanzanian politician who promoted a Pan-Africanist ideology known as Ujamaa, which means "extended family" or "brotherhood" in Swahili.

Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born on April 13, 1922 in Butiama, on the eastern shore of lake Victoria in north west Tanganyika. His father was the chief of the small Zanaki tribe. He was 12 before he started school (he had to walk 26 miles to Musoma to do so). Later, he transferred for his secondary education to the Tabora Government Secondary School. His intelligence was quickly recognized by the Roman Catholic fathers who taught him. He went on, with their help, to train as a teacher at Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda). On gaining his Certificate, he taught for three years and then went on a government scholarship to study history and political economy for his Master of Arts at the University of Edinburgh (he was the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and only the second to gain a university degree outside Africa. In Edinburgh, partly through his encounter with Fabian thinking, Nyerere began to develop his particular vision of connecting socialism with African communal living.

On his return to Tanganyika, Nyerere was forced by the colonial authorities to make a choice between his political activities and his teaching. He was reported as saying that he was a schoolmaster by choice and a politician by accident. Working to bring a number of different nationalist factions into one grouping he achieved this in 1954 with the formation of TANU (the Tanganyika African National Union). He became President of the Union (a post he held until 1977), entered the Legislative Council in 1958 and became chief minister in 1960. A year later Tanganyika was granted internal self-government and Nyerere became premier. Full independence came in December 1961.

In 1962, Nyerere was elected the first president of Tanganyika, a predecessor to modern Tanzania and a newly independent republic. His administration emphasized decolonizing society and the state, also unsuccessfully pursuing a Pan-Africanist East African Federation with Uganda and Kenya.

In 1967, Nyerere issued the "Arusha Declaration", forbidding government leaders from owning shares or holding directorates in private companies, receiving more than one salary, or owning any houses that they rented to others. In compliance with this declaration, Nyerere sold his second home and his wife donated her poultry farm to a local co-operative.

Nyerere’s integrity, ability as a political orator and organizer, and readiness to work with different groupings was a significant factor in independence being achieved without bloodshed. In this he was helped by the co-operative attitude of the last British governor — Sir Richard Turnbull. In 1964, following a coup in Zanzibar (and an attempted coup in Tanganyika itself) Nyerere negotiated with the new leaders in Zanzibar and agreed to absorb them into the union government. The result was the creation of the Republic of Tanzania.

Nyerere's government also aided in liberation struggles elsewhere in Africa, training and aiding anti-apartheid South African groups and helping to depose Ugandan ruler Idi Amin. In 1985, Nyerere stepped down as President and was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi in a notably peaceful and stable transition of power.

"Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated."

Julius Nyerere

Shot in the dark but have you tried breath meditation? For everyday low-stakes mistakes, it has been helpful for not beating myself over inconsequential ones. Also if I'm present with myself it's harder to lose perspective.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

idk I don't really "get" meditation, or mindfulness, or what being present with one's self means

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

For me it's breathing in through the nose, out through the mouth. Count 1 on inhale, 2 on exhale, 3 on inhale, etc. Then start over at 1 after reaching 10.

After you do that for a short while, try and notice the sensations in your body, be that emotions, feelings of your weight on the floor or on the furniture, sounds you can hear, even visually notice your surroundings.

Also, while you're breathing, your mind will wander (which is completely normal!) When you realize that happened, gently note the thought you had, realize it's just a thought that may or may not reflect reality, "oh, I'm thinking" and gently push that away as you return to your breath.

To define being present or present with myself, it's like... I don't know about you, but I spend a lot of time--probably too much--listening to podcasts, watching TV/videos, reading intently, or otherwise tuning out reality. Sometimes when you feel bad enough, you kind of need to do something like that to escape from reality or relax. But sometimes it can help to just be in a room, by yourself or with others, and be alone with your thoughts.

Without that kind of check in every day or so, (or over a longer time, weeks, months, etc) for me, everything starts to feel scary and bad and wrong. But if I actually looked at my immediate surroundings, barring an unstable living condition or a scary job, I'm not, like, immediately in trouble while at home or in another safe place. But you can lose sight of that.

No self_improvements mega? Well, here’s a quick update.

  • No 225 bench yet. Had to go easy to recover my back.

  • Wrote a short fictional story. Not much but I’m glad I did it.

  • I want to also become less of a misanthropic asshole. This smug sense of “everyone is an idiot except for me” that I do in response to chud nonsense has alienated some really cool people, and I don’t want to lose any more goodwill.

Im gonna microwave a potato... and EAT it

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

Light: "You see, it's impossible I'm Kira because the time of death of the victim was at precisely 6:30 and if you see by the state of this potato and the remaining time on the microwave timer I had to be just putting the potato in. No one else was inside my house so there's no way there was a 3rd party to do it for me."

L: "Hmmmm, yes. Interesting. . .

"Looking at your potato I notice the chives. When you said at the cafe during our first meeting that you hate chives. I guess you've acquired a test for chives now? And while the reported time of death was 6:30 in actuality it was 6:45 with a 15 minute delay I had the guards add to all the CCTV recording systems."

Long pause of Light staring at his steaming baked potato internally angry.

L: "But don't let me interrupt you from your feast."

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

why are reconstructions of lorica segmentata always of these crude square strips of metal? like yeah there's some nice archaeological samples from britain that were like that, but the artistic depictions--contemporaneous mind you--tend toward a rounded shape for the strips. was every frieze-maker in the roman empire trying to make roman military equipment look fancier than it was? or were perhaps legionaires not exiled to the asscrack of the empire possibly enjoying a finer and more pleasing shape of craftsmanship?

Vargas Llosa has died.

Peruvian writer and politician Mario Vargas Llosa died this Sunday in Lima, where he lived with his family. Since distancing himself from left-wing politics, he has embraced right-wing politics. In 1989, The Washington Post would write that though Vargas Llosa's party appeared center-right, "he has ties with far-right politicians in other countries".

Vargas Llosa has continued to be criticized due to his association with far-right groups and politicians. The Christian Science Monitor would call Vargas Llosa "a right-wing maverick" while Jacobin would plainly describe him as a "far-right novelist".

Vargas Llosa has described himself as a supporter of liberalism and said that the individuals who have had most impact on his political thought have included Karl Popper, Friedrich Hayek and Isaiah Berlin. According to The Nation, Vargas Llosa would condemn leftist groups entirely due to the controversies of some while minimizing similar actions by neoliberal governments.

He supported right-wing libertarian candidate Javier Milei in the 2023 Argentine general election. Following the arrest of Augusto Pinochet for crimes against humanity in 1999, Vargas Llosa would write an op-ed in The New York Times asking why left wing dictators were also not being arrested.

During the 2022 Brazilian general election, Vargas Llosa expressed his endorsement for conservative leader Jair Bolsonaro. "The case of Bolsonaro it's a hard question. His jokes are very hard to endorse, for a liberal [...] Now, between Bolsonaro and Lula, I prefer Bolsonaro. Even with jokes from Bolsonaro, Lula no." said Vargas Llosa at a conference

I remember a playground insult was "scab", which was used for someone hanging around trying to get someone else's lunch in a kinda passive way. Most of the other insults were some form of slur or claims about sexual relations with relatives. Wild

The Devil May Cry anime is bad nerds

Devil May Cry's showrunner praised Asmongold after putting a reference to him in the anime

"They laughed at [Asmongold] and worshipped the late-night talk show puppets who were built to distract them from the truth."

Chuds flipping to saying the show is good now.

Really wish I didn't have to time taking my multivitamins exactly, like, 1/3 into eating my supper so I don't get nauseated and throw up the entire meal. If I take before I might get queasy and uncomfortable but won't throw up most likely, but if I take it too late I'll throw everything up like 15 minutes later. Sucks ass.

We had our municipal elections today in Finland and the only ML group still sort of standing in the country had two people running with zero visibility or even posters.

The one I voted for had gotten 4 votes four years ago, this year he got over 40.

It's not much, but it means there are at least some other commies somewhere in this area to organize with. hammer-sickle

You can always tell how young the average YouTube commenter is by noticing that a lot of their “pov” or “when you ___” jokes involve school or their mothers scolding them

I bought some Neopets stuff off Etsy, not realizing it was so official I even got some item codes. I don't want to get sucked back into it. I don't like how MMO's with their "dailies" and their "weeklies" work on my brain.

Not to be an AI bro, but how good are LLMs in helping with flow and tone in writing?

I tried to see if I made any dumb flow mistakes in my writing with chatGPT, and it normally likes everything. Maybe I did a fine job, or are there better tools for assistance with writing, or maybe should I just stick to reading it aloud?

Oh btw, as my lower back was recovering from strain I wrote a short story geared more for children (although I just wrote it for me) called At least I’m an elf. Basically, there’s a typical haughty elf that has some elf bros and they’re kind of fashy dicks. The villain protagonist’s name is Forsan and he’s their ringleader, they do have legit fun together sometimes but none of them, particularly Forsan, have anything going for them except for being elves and also being kind of good at magic and therefore also thinking they’re hot shit. Eventually Forsan’s friends start going on some quests and meet more people who aren’t elves and find the “lesser races” don’t hate or envy them at all and they can bring their legitimately cool elven magic to the table, while Forsan doubles down on his elf snobbery and alienates the few people that brought him genuine joy. To make matters worse, his friends are now much better sorcerers because of their adventures and how they have been inspired by wizards and clerics. Forsan realizes then what he’s done and tries to start over and leave his elf supremacy in the past, but has to now make new friends entirely.

Obviously it’s a very short version of the story but you get the gist.

There's something weirdly therapeutic about working a slow solo day. Maybe its because it one of the few chances I get at recharging my social battery or how nice and quite my work area feels, but its a vibe. If only I had a nice view of the outsidesicko-wistful
