Is it ham? No, it's beef. Is it steamed? No, it's grilled. So then, what do you call it? Steamed ham.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 5 months ago

Because it's an Albany expression.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago

It also tastes quite similar to Krusty Burgers.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

that's what i call hamburgers

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Is it ham?

Yes, it's a hamburger steak sandwich. Ham for short!

Is it steamed?

Yes, it's steamed over onions, slider style.

So then, what do you call it?

A waste of my time and yours.

Despite the fact they are obviously grilled?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Maybe they had a place that did their burgers like white castle. The meat is cooked on top of onions so it is technically steamed rather than grilled.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

First burgers were actually steamed in little trays.

I think people are missing the Simpsons reference.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

My guess is yes, on account of me living in the Capital District for two decades and never heard hamburgers referred to as steamed ham. I rarely watch the Simpson's, so it all makes sense now.

Nah, I refuse to believe that people who live in this county are like, "Hey buddy, want to stop by Wedny's for a steamed ham?" Get real, they watch the same commercials as the rest of us.

A lot of us are obsessed with free software and dedicate our entire existence to not doing even the slightest most minor thing that might support corporate corruption and enshitification, not even sit through a 15 second ad.

I don't even know what burger commercials look like.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

God I'd go for a burger right now. Your comment literally worked as an ad for me.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

But it's true! I saw it in a documentary: https://youtube.com/watch?v=4jXEuIHY9ic

Localized entirely within your kitchen?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 months ago

I thought you said this map would be about steamed clams?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Believe it or not, there's actually places in the US where it's called a hamburg and others were it's called a burger. There's more regional variation than you'd think, but I realize this is just a Simpsons joke.

no it's an Albany expression

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Why do they call it hamburger when it's a beef burger?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Because it's an evolution of the Hamburg steak, which was named for the city of Hamburg.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Also: doesn't the word "burger" stem from the word "hamburger"?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

No, no, it stems from hambourgeois!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago
[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

TIL. For the longest of times I just assumed it was literally ham and never even considered ordering it from a menu!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Because you ham in the burger out hot eat the burger

Eh...

[Shardikprime enters the Lemmy thread. In the comment section, he sits and places a comment in the thread, while the user runs for fresh memes , only to find the meme roast they prepared is burnt, and gasps in horror]

What do they call Krusty's partially gelatinated non dairy gum based beverages?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

They are neither ham nor steamed, unless that's exactly what they are having over there? Wouldn't compare it to a hamburger though... (A hamburger being a Hamburg steak, as in the German city)

[–] [email protected] 17 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's an old family recipe, patented skinnerburgers

White Castle is steamed.
