Selective prosecution (en.wikipedia.org)
submitted 5 months ago by Nougat@fedia.io to c/wikipedia@lemmy.world

In jurisprudence, selective prosecution is a procedural defense in which defendants argue that they should not be held criminally liable for breaking the law because the criminal justice system discriminated against them by choosing to prosecute. In claims of selective prosecution, defendants essentially argue that it is irrelevant whether they are guilty of violating a law, but that the fact of being prosecuted is based upon forbidden reasons. Such a claim might, for example, entail an argument that persons of different age, race, religion, sex, gender, or political alignment, were engaged in the same illegal acts for which the defendant is being tried yet were not prosecuted, and that the defendant is being prosecuted specifically because of a bias as to that class.

Aurora, IL

I am also told that at least one fire station had kept their flag lowered, and locked it in place, requiring the fire chief to come cut the lock. Also that there are people sneaking around lowering flags.

The Charlie Kirk shooting suspect is in state custody, NBC News confirms.

The suspect is still at large - officials earlier said they found a high-powered rifle in woods near where Kirk was shot.

Also, "high powered rifle" essentially means "not a 22".

Not entirely "new," and not mine - but there was some interest in such a thing expressed over the weekend.

That is all.

Hi. I'm a dad. (fedia.io)

This place came up in conversation over the weekend. I'd made a similar thing back when kbin.social existed. It didn't take off at all then, and went down with the ship.

That was well over a year ago now, and the landscape has changed (in oh so many ways). Seems like a good time to jumpstart something like this again, and so ... here I am.

I'm kind of fine with not overmarketing fast food to children.

Mangione, 26, appeared in court wearing a green cable knit sweater over a white shirt. He was brought into the courtroom in leg and arm shackles and wearing a bulletproof vest.

Theater to make him look like a villain that people want to shoot at.

Because screenshots of what someone said on social media aren't journalism:

Mexico has restrictive laws regarding gun possession. There are only two stores in the entire country, DCAM near the capital, and OTCA, in Apodaca, Nuevo León. It also takes months of paperwork to have a chance at purchasing one legally.

Universal health care? I don't want government making my health care decisions! We have for-profit companies for that.

I'm gonna need more than somebody's social media post on this.

Edit: Because right now it's "somebody's" social media post with an unsourced and undated quote from "someone" referring to "reporting," with a picture of a lady that has a PBS/NewsHour watermark. This is exactly the kind of thing you should be skeptical of in the absence of better confirmation, all up and down that ladder of vagueness.

She's said she'll be at ABC on Sep 10, and looks forward to debating Trump in the time and place he previously agreed to. She's holding his feet to the fire on this, I don't expect there to be any agreement on any other debate until this one is over.

I've been watching Monk recently, without ads, and it's very interesting how television shows used to be written and edited for commercials. It's dead obvious where the commercials used to be, and even that detracts from the overall experience.
