Reminds me of the part in the count of Monte Cristo when he goes on for a page about how good his hash is;

In this valley were magnificent gardens planted by Hassen-ben-Sabah, and in these gardens isolated pavilions. Into these pavilions he admitted the elect, and there, says Marco Polo, gave them to eat a certain herb, which transported them to Paradise, in the midst of ever-blooming shrubs, ever-ripe fruit, and ever-lovely virgins. What these happy persons took for reality was but a dream; but it was a dream so soft, so voluptuous, so enthralling, that they sold themselves body and soul to him who gave it to them, and obedient to his orders as to those of a deity, struck down the designated victim, died in torture without a murmur, believing that the death they underwent was but a quick transition to that life of delights of which the holy herb, now before you had given them a slight foretaste."

"Then," cried Franz, "it is hashish! I know that -- by name at least."

"That is it precisely, Signor Aladdin;

    He's def a reactionary, but he's witty and has some useful insights. I think he's an enemy of socialism that's worth reading.

    I think his writing on the death of God is especially poignant, and we are still living through the death of God.

    He also wrote that all anti-semites should be shot.

    Genealogy of Morals remains undefeated. The first and second essays in that one are such bangers.

    To breed an animal with the prerogative to promise – is that not precisely the paradoxical task which nature has set herself with regard to humankind? is it not the real problem of humankind?

    The ‘creditor’ always becomes more humane as his wealth increases; finally, the amount of his wealth determines how much injury he can sustain without suffering from it. It is not impossible to imagine society so conscious of its power that it could allow itself the noblest luxury available to it, – that of letting its malefactors go unpunished. ‘What do I care about my parasites’, it could say, ‘let them live and flourish: I am strong enough for all that!’ . . . Justice, which began by saying ‘Everything can be paid off, everything must be paid off ’, ends by turning a blind eye and letting off those unable to pay, – it ends, like every good thing on earth, by sublimating itself. The self- sublimation of justice: we know what a nice name it gives itself – mercy [gnade]; it remains, of course, the prerogative of the most powerful man, better still, his way of being beyond the law.

    lol wat. Israel doesn't give 2 shits about shooting anti semites. it has been decades since they even pretended.

    probably one of the reasons why their whole crybully routine has become so much less effective. If they took just 1% of the effort spent on violence against muslim/arab and used to to mete out some righteous justice to bigots, it would appear they took the issue seriously and aren't just "playing a card" when convenient to them. it would muddle the situation a lot more, with confusion to their benefit.

    but they can't do it because of how cozy allies they are with all those bigots.

    I would maintain that anti-semites, like all chauvinists, should be suppressed.

    Israel isnt suppressing anti-semites, to hold the line that they are is to buy into their narrative that Zionism=Judaism. This is an incorrect belief that our enemies want us to believe.

    'anti-anti-semite' crusades often just because zionist crusades, as we have seen since WW2 and on this very forum. Kill Hamas and the Houthis, those anti-semites! Ban the anti-semitic users who want to use a "holocaust emoji" isntrael. Muslims are all a bunch of anti-semitic conspiracists, unlike me the enlightened Western Anti-Zionist who opposes Israel the correct way. Shoot those children who hate the jews who steal their land, they are anti-semites!

    yes, hexbear is full of various kinds of infantile westerners with various infantile takes. i don't think it follows from that, logically, that antisemitism doesn't materially exist. i can't say for sure how powerful they are, but there's no doubt that there are all sorts of fascist groups peppering the west who really genuinely hate jews. some of them even leave their house on occasion. whether there's a path for those groups to create genuine oppression is a different question, but it's not one that can be answered by a simple glib dismissal. obviously outside the west i'm not convinced there's any threat from antisemitism.

    the threat from anti-anti-semitic concern trolling is higher than the threat of anti-semitism in the left. Letting in Liberal Zionist arguments, alienating POC and arabs and muslims, giving the CIA a wedge to destroy our organizations. These are all proven tactics of our enemies that work because a certain portion of the left has a weakness to it and falls for it.

  • on the other hand, refusing to address a genuine issue is its own wedge. i don't really believe there's a whole lot of "antisemitism on the left" but there is, ideologically at least, a lot of antisemitism in the west. we should not, i agree, entertain concern trolling about "antisemitism on the left". especially the israel flag emoji bullshit. but i think there are a lot of people on here and elsewhere who insist that antisemitism doesn't materially exist anywhere in the world, and i don't think they've met the burden of proof on that one. for one, where did it go? what makes the right-wing bellyaching about jews not materially real? that's not to downplay the issue of islamophobia on the left, which does genuinely and materially exist. and yes, i agree that the concern trolling comes from that.

    Youre bringing in a bunch of shit neither I nor Nietzsche gestured at. I'm obviously against the weaponizarion of so-called anti-Semitism by Zionist. I unequivocally support Hamas, Ansarallah and the Axis of Resistance against the Zionist entity.

    So, I'm a little confused by your posturing. Are you against against actual anti-Semites or not?

  • i'm against anti-anti-semite crusading in left spaces where it isn't a problem. it's concern trolling and zionist-adjacent behavior. It's how they attack muslims (and ex-muslims) like me, it's how they destroyed the UK left, and it's how they attack anti-zionists and this community has already demonstrated it is prone to this type of overcorrecting self-policing that drives off POC and muslims.

    My first comment was a commentary on how poorly "shooting all the anti-semites" has aged, and how agreeing with reactionaries about "we should shoot all the people I think are anti-semites" is a little suspect in this light.

    He shits on Germans in everything he writes. A few pages earlier, he wrote how German culture corrupts everything it touches, how their food is as bad as the english "cuisine" and how the country sucks so bad it ruins his digestion.

    Despite everything, nietzsche is one of the funnier philosophers.

    Genealogy of Morals was the work of his that I personally found most interesting. Beyond Good and Evil is probably also worth reading (despite being ultra-edgelord stuff for the most part) because it's been so influential on so many things

    That's basically nietzsche's entire shtick. Create a nuclear hot take and then justify it through completely unexpected angles. It's why he's so fun to read, even though he's a reactionary.

    Also, he's weirdly obsessed with digestion for some reason.

    Also, he's weirdly obsessed with digestion for some reason.

    From what I understand of his themes, he wants to move away from the brain (pure intellect, science, philosophies that come as a result of rational thought and natural conclusions of "The Good") to philosophies born of instinct and what "feels right". You don't really want certain foods because you came to the natural conclusions that it is the healthiest for you by reading the ingredients and comparing it to your dietary needs, you want food because you tried it and you like the way it makes you feel. He essentially wants to treat morality the same way, adopting whatever morality system affirms his life the most.

    Nietzsche was a sickly guy, and when he was feeling bad, he was stuck in bed, feeling sick and being resentful of himself and everyone. When he was feeling good, he would go on long walks and imagining an ideal person who was untethered by modern morality. I kinda see these as depressive and manic phases (not to diagnose him, it's just the closest parallel to my own life), but he saw the true emotions/drives behind slave and master moralities

    He was probably preoccupied with digestion because he suffered from really bad gastrointestinal and abdominal issues his whole life - among many other severe ailments. Why do you think he was reactionary?

    He was undoubtedly a reactionary. Losurdo's book on Nietzsche describes how he's a reactionary. This review of the book touches on some of the major points (the book itself is long af at about a 1000 pages, I only made it half way through before tiring out and giving up). If I were to explain his worldview in a nutshell, it's that culture requires that there be a permanent underclass for the cultured aristocracy to oppress; there is no culture without this. Because of this, socialism, along with any strain of thought that leads the aristocracy to take pity on those beneath them, must be combatted

    Why do you think he was reactionary?

    Probably because he was. The easiest thing to point to is that he was a devout anticommunist on the basis not only of disdain for the specific communist movements of his day but because he thought the stated goals of communism, e.g. "to each according to their need," an end to war, etc. would effectively mean the death of the human spirit. He gets sanitized all the time but he was fundamentally loudly opposed to social progress except for his own schema of an atomized second "revaluation of all values" to have the non-sheeple live as moral artists and inventors.
