Miss me with that shit. If I wanted virtual buttons I'd play on my phone.

[-] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Even when I play mobile I have a controller for the landscape games that need more than ~~three~~ inputs. Make that two -- I play Sonic on mobile. Move, jump, spin. Even spin is a combination of the first two

PlayStation is speed running losing business for PS6.

[-] michaelalf@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

You want disc? Fuck you, now your buttons are gone.

"In order to keep up with changing player demands, we at PlayStation are announcing that controller buttons will no longer be available physically."

"From now on, each game will come with its own separate subscription service, where you can subscribe to the buttons for the controller device in digital form only. The game publishers will also sell skins for the buttons at additional cost, also only in digital form."

"Play has no limits."

[-] nullify3112@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

The controller only has a microphone. You talk to the AI with the controller and the AI plays the game for you.

[-] GraniteM@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

I can conceive of a controller with a surface like those pin art toys

with a membrane stretched over it so that you could reprogram the location and shape of the buttons at will and still have a tactile experience...

...but it would be needlessly complicated, expensive, almost certainly less functional than actual buttons, and more prone to failure. So, not really a meaningful or desirable improvement.

[-] AstralPath@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago

They are clearly ignorant to the backlash related to car entertainment centers with no buttons.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 22 points 3 days ago

Sony really want to go out of business don't they.

[-] kirisamemarisa@lemmy.eco.br 6 points 2 days ago

i don't really like the idea of digital buttons because if anything happens to the software they stop working (which is why i'd love if mobile phones brought back physical nav buttons)

[-] toynbee@piefed.social 12 points 3 days ago

My kid is still young and is growing up with a lot of their gaming done on a tablet. They're remarkably adept with touchscreen controls, but it just seems so limiting to me.

I eventually connected a Bluetooth controller to their tablet and suddenly they're amazed by how much easier gameplay is!

[-] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago

NO GODDAMMIT

[-] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago

You have the subscribe for the buttons separately

[-] Surp@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Oh you wanted more than the two buttons the software provides? We at Sony have found that our customers prefer to have to purchase more software buttons as needed rather than accidentally clicking an unneeded button during an epic boss battle and lose!

For anyone unfamiliar with patents - companies like Sony file a shitload of patents every year that they never end up using. Until more info comes out, the patent itself means little.

For context, Microsoft has a total of 124462 patents globally, not all of which have been granted. These days it files about 3000 new patents every year. A lot of them are very vague, some don't make any sense at all, and many are never put to any use.

Apparently Sony has even more patents than Microsoft, currently sitting at nearly quarter million. However, only a third of them have been granted so far.

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

I’m reminded of a lobby quote in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando (by your leader, an oligarchic energy company head)

“Note to self: Patents are cheap, and a reliable source of income.”

[-] missingno@fedia.io 21 points 3 days ago

Do remember that the vast majority of these kinds of patents never end up getting used, I doubt this one will be.

We learned this lesson from the early days of mobile gaming. Many games tried to emulate on-screen controllers, and it was pretty awful. Developers realized it was awful and shifted towards designing control schemes from the ground up with touchscreens in mind.

Though now that I say this, I suppose it's entirely possible that a controller like this could be used not to emulate or replace a DualShock, but as a peripheral that new kinds of games can be designed around. That feels even more unlikely though, I miss the glory days of games built around goofy peripherals (Boktai my beloved), but those days are so far behind us that I don't see them ever coming back.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 3 days ago

They're just hell bent on making sure absolutely nobody wants the PS6.

[-] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

This sounds like a terrible idea.

[-] Muffi@programming.dev 12 points 3 days ago

Why do companies these days not understand the value of tactility?

[-] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 0 points 3 days ago
[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

And generally speaking, the point of a patent is....?

[-] Goodeye8@piefed.social 8 points 3 days ago

Stifle innovation? A patent doesn't mean anything will be made. But it does mean anyone except the patent owner won't be making the patented thing.

[-] smeg@feddit.uk 2 points 3 days ago

To license the idea to other people who want to do something with it?

While auto makers are slowly realizing that people hate touch buttons, Sony did not get the memo

[-] tonyn@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago

Pretty soon they'll have us buying consoles without a physical console.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

They already tried it once (remember Stadia?), and they will try again!

[-] lemmyng@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

...Holy shit, Sony, pretty sure those tweets were just jokes 🫪

[-] NutinButNet@hilariouschaos.com 7 points 3 days ago

That sounds wildly uncomfortable.

[-] esc@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago

it would be very funny if they really made a controller without buttons.

[-] nicpicname@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago

The real joke is that they’re even bothering to patent new controllers.

[-] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

It's standard Bluetooth; I'm sure one can pair an Xbox controller in protest. Protesting what exactly, I'm not sure.

[-] mrfriki@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

First remove disks from consoles. Then remove controls from controllers. What's next, removing fun from videogames?

[-] mrmaplebar@fedia.io 3 points 3 days ago

I hereby dub this the "nocontroller" or alternatively the "zeroshock".

[-] Janx@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

And I thought Sony was taking a break from their streak of terrible, business-ruining decisions...

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world -2 points 3 days ago

This looks dope I love the idea that I can move the buttons where ever I want them to be.
