The only one that wouldn't would be SUSE. Headquarters in Luxembourg, privately owned by a Swedish investment firm.

Careful with what you wish for. Not everyone here is idiot enough to think everything is resolved with a bullet to the head.

Enjoy your 1 day ban.

That field is here to allow the support of it, not to make it required everywhere.

Seatbelts isn't required everywhere, but car maker won't make two version of a car, one that support seatbelts, and one that doesn't. They will make one model, with the required attach points to install a seatbelt, and install an actual seatbelt only on cars that goes somewhere where it is mandatory.

Here we are in a similar situation. That filed is here to make of possible for OS to support that law, but it doesn't mean we'll all have to conform to that law unless you live in a country that have said law.

An open source software is, by law, the maintainer's (which can be an individual, or a group of persons) property. It is said maintainer who has the right to grant you any kind of license over what he owns.

In the case of an open-source project, that license is very permissive, true, but if you take the time to read any of those, you will always see :

  • A provision indicating that the owners grants that licence within the limits of the applicable laws
  • Sometimes a provision indicating under which juridiction said license is granted. If not, the user local laws are the ones used.

Source : the fucking law and the fucking licenses. And my friend, which happens to be a lawyer specialized in intellectual property laws.

[-] Dremor@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Open-sourcing a software doesn't make it magically immune to laws.

[-] Dremor@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

It's a fucking field. Why is everyone loosing his mind over it? It's not like it is required, nor will it prevent you to do anything if you put data in (except not being able to change it later).

If you have to complain, complain about the law, not poor guy that has to add it, by law.

Hi there.

You probably expect some sort of brigading of some sort, or some ironic post to spite you or your values, but this is not. I don't share the provocations and general negativity that this new instance seems to have attracted.

I, for change, welcome you to the fediverse, in hope, maybe naive, that sharing a common ground would allow both of our community nembers to get out of our respective echo chambers and try to find our common values and get a better understanding of each other, rather than locking ourselves into our dogmas and differences.

Unfortunately, not everyone will share this goodwill, especially on a world as fractured as our is now, so I'll add a "good luck" handling all the stuff that are unfortunately coming your way, and hope you will not take it too badly.

We, on the left, have our share of tankies and idiots, and that's not going to change any time soon, but at least there are others that want to mend that broken world, even if it takes time.

Be well, stay kind, and good luck

A (French) leftist.

Hi friends,

There was many threads lately on that topic, and despite attempts at making all those threads follow the community rules, looks like it will be better to make a megathread in order to avoid drowning other topics under the constant updates about this.

You find bellow multiple sections, containing as much info as possible on every aspect of this topic, including the latest news (as well as older ones), and how to participate in fighting it (if you wish to).

The moderation, even if we do have our own personal opinion on the topic, will try to stay as neutral as possible, which mean all opinion (for or against) are welcome, as long as it respect the rules, especially rule 2.

As a special exception to rule 4, memes are welcome in the comment section, as I saw some good ones in various other topics, as soon as they respect rule 2.

"We got together with Ross Scott of Accursed Farms to discuss the Stop Killing Games initiative that he is presently spearheading. The Stop Killing Games initiative aims to preserve games in a reasonably playable state even after the game's publishers and/or developers abandon it, helping ensure consumers keep some level of what they have paid for rather than having all access revoked and the game destroyed."

If you are a citizen in the EU or UK, don't forget to sign the Stop Killing Games petition!

"Stop Killing Games" is a consumer movement started to challenge the legality of publishers destroying video games they have sold to customers. An increasing number of video games are sold effectively as goods - with no stated expiration date - but designed to be completely unplayable as soon as support from the publisher ends. This practice is a form of planned obsolescence and is not only detrimental to customers, but makes preservation effectively impossible. Furthermore, the legality of this practice is largely untested in many countries.

Over the past year, we have succesfully escalated complaints on this problem to consumer agencies in France, Germany, and Australia, and have brought forth petitions for new law on this problem to various countries. A list of the actions taken to date can be viewed here. As of 2025, most consumer action on this matter has concluded and we are awaiting decisions on it from several governments. However, there are a few remaining avenues left where people can participate if they are eligible!
