Paris, Venice, Disneyland are not enjoyable destinations anymore. They're packed with people blocking the way to take a stupid picture for social media. It's so narcissistic, you're not there to admire the art in museums or the architecture but to take a picture of yourself next to it 🫩

The worst part? That other non mainstream locations are also getting packed with people every year because of these people sharing it on social media. Slovenia, a country that's supposed to have modest tourism is now full of people that are making the bus services crash because they're not prepared for this amount of tourists

You'd think the heat waves in Europe would hinder tourism but for some reason there's still even more people coming every year. I swear that if I hear another German tourist speak with that goofly deep voice of theirs I'm going to crash out.

You're not stuck in traffic. You are traffic.

My uncle was caught trafficking.

I was gonna jump in here to defend halloween but then I realized you mean the European definition of "holiday" as vacation and not a....what do you even call yearly occasions like christmas and halloween and may day and such, if not "holidays"?

Omg I wasn't aware that Americans say it differently. I would call those "festivities"

You can go to paris without hanging out at the Seine all day

It's funny how it changes at different times in your life. We have an all-inclusive holiday with my wife, sprogs and extended family booked in Lanzarote this October.

Exactly the kind of thing I'd have thought of as a living hell when I was a young man, backpacking solo through SE Asia.

But honestly I'm looking forward to it having done my first package holiday a few years back. Decent and varied food, booze and sun by the beach with plenty of activities for the Little People, leaving me to read by the pool. Bliss.

Did it change, or do you realize that backpacking through SE asia with responsibilities would kinda suck compared to doing it without responsibilities? And that an all expenses paid vacation when you have responsibilities is really nice, but limiting if you have no responsibilities...

I think you're absolutely right, but I think the point still stands that it depends broadly on what stage you're at in life. I can certainly envisage a time when I'm older (touch wood), where I'd want a different type of vacation from either of the ones I mentioned.

This is one of the reason while I now take vacations in June or September.

If Brits call vacations holidays, what do they call holiday days?

[-] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 2 points 17 hours ago

Festivities

Australians call both holidays, but it hardly comes up, if we're talking about a named holiday like Easter or Christmas. It's only like this when someone is talking about one of the two categories ambiguously that it would be nice to have two words

Annual leave

I have a hard time being too mad about pictures unless the people are being obnoxious about it. Some obliviousness is expected from captivated and enamored tourists. The ones that can't just take a normal picture and move on suck though.

Even if you choose to do homecation, if is fucking crowded. We had a German invader in our fridge, for god’s sake, this one had a high shrilly kind of voice, but we could see he was German because of the lederhosen and the wurstnkrapfenschalad, or whatever these naz1s eat. Next vacation, my hubby and I will go to the dentist for a week to get our teeth cleaned, although a friend of us was vacationing at the urologist , hoping for some quality time, and a cruise ship full of Japanese climbed in through the window, Jesus Christ, they ran out of ice cream pronto within minutes.

Hopefully.

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
