On the one hand, cabbage is cabbage, and that's pretty fuckin good. On the other hand, brussel sprouts are like tiny cabbages, and aren't small versions of things better

Brussel sprouts are better by far

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

I can't disagree

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago

Brussels have a more distinctive flavor, but cabbage is way more versatile. I would pick cabbage.

Cabbage is, among other things, kimchi and sauerkraut

[-] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago

My opinion is that Brussels sprouts are better but cabbage is more versatile

[-] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

this is the official party line

[-] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah if the assignment was “buy a pound of veggies for dinner”: Sprouts.

Buy 4 pounds of veggies for the week? Cabbage. Slaw. Steaks. stuffed. Stir fry. Kraut. And it’s usually around a buck a pound.

Someday we need to figure out an official hexbear brassica tier list, same with beans

[-] Thordros@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Having a tier list where everything is SSS+ hologram foil tier probably isn't very helpful.

[-] Arahnya@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

brussely boys for me. although cabbage is very versatile and yummy as well. There's something about purple cabbage... its like a god-like object sent to us mortals.. actually this is how I feel about all fruits and veg

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Life would suck really hard if all we had were wild type fruits and vegetables, like, if we lived in some fucked up reality where domestication didn't improve edibility

[-] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yummy vetch and teosinte. Though have you ever had a Beach plum? Delicious but high pit/fruit ratio.

[-] AnarchoAnarchist@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

If they aren't from Brussels they are technically just sparkling baby cabbage nuggets

[-] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

what is a cabbage other than just one big brussel sprout? thinking-about-it

[-] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

Brussels are so good and i can't think of a yummy cabbage dish

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

can't think of a yummy cabbage dish

Various Caribbean stews, sauerkraut, coleslaw, roasted cabbage, braised cabbage, salted cabbage, pickled cabbage, Goan fooghath, cabbage stir fry, kimchi, cabbage rolls, southern fried cabbage, cabbage filled dumplings, colcannon, and that's just what I can think of off the top of my head

[-] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

Coleslaw is good and sauerkraut is good on a hotdog for sure.

Cabbage just tastes like hard lettuce idk. Never a big fan of the other ones you listed

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

just tastes like hard lettuce

??? It tastes totally different especially if you roast it

Also miso braised cabbage and jamaican jerk grilled cabbage

You can't even cook lettuce without it getting all fucked up so there's absolutely an entire field of savory flavor it could never compare with

I used to think the same as you though but the ways of the chef have opened me to pathways of knowledge some might find unnatural and treacherous

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Try roasting some until browned after seasoning it good and then braise it in stock before adding it to a creamy coconut curry

[-] ChaosMaterialist@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

I cut my sprouts in half and pan fry them face down with olive oil, salt, and garlic. Absolutely stellar!

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Yknow what I've been so busy roasting them and deep frying them that i haven't done that yet

[-] rubber_chicken@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

Brussels sprouts as the primary ingredient win. But cabbage + sesame oil + whatever over heat is such a shortcut to success.

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

I like both, grilled b sprouts are tasty and coleslaw is great in the summer.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 4 points 2 weeks ago

I'm the odd duck, I guess. I find cabbage has a milder flavor, and more versatile. I love making cabbage potato soup. It's easy and delicious.

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Brussel spouts are kinda annoying to cook with. Not a huge fan.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

How are they annoying to cook with you just cut them in half and trim off the bad parts and then roast with oil and seasoning, or deep fry and toss in seasoning, or steam and toss in seasoning

[-] Thordros@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Cabbage for the everyday workhorse meal, brussels sprouts for special occasions.

[-] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm gonna have to go with cabbage, I love brussels but not as much as cabbage. One of the most universally loved crops and very versatile.

[-] john_brown@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Cabbage, next question

[-] gray@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Brussel sprouts taste better on their own, but cabbage is more versatile and there are lots of good cabbage pickles that easily beat plain brussel sprouts.

[-] Bronstein_Tardigrade@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Brussel sprout golabkis take a lot of patience and tiny fingers.
