From Naked Capitalism:

...one has to wonder what the latest Blinken round of visits to the Middle East was supposed to accomplish, since all it did was expose our impotence. Even the Financial Times could not hide that the meetings with Netanyahu and then Arab leaders were a train wreck. Netanyahu rejected even any itty bitty ceasefire, branded a humanitarian pause, to get relief in, demanding that Hamas release all hostages first. The fact that Israel has welched or underperformed on its past begrudging promises to let trucks from Egypt in, would make that a non-starter even before getting to Hamas being sure to stick to its position of wanting to trade hostages for Palestinian prisoners. And of course the Arab states are not about to budge. Blinken got a more pointed version of what he was told before.

Antony Blinken faced intense pressure from regional allies to facilitate an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, laying bare the stark gap between US support for Israel and the outrage in Arab capitals over the siege and bombardment of the strip….

Sameh Shoukry, the Egyptian foreign minister, demanded an unconditional ceasefire, a commitment that Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu bluntly rejected after meeting Blinken on Friday.

Blinken had been expected to “brainstorm” with Arab diplomats the future of Gaza, home to 2.3mn Palestinians, after the war ends. Safadi bluntly rejected those talks as premature. “How can we even entertain what will happen in Gaza when we do not know how Gaza will be left?” he asked Blinken. “Are we going to be talking about a wasteland? Are we talking about a whole population reduced to refugees?”

This comes off as the sort of thing someone who had just read classic texts on negotiating trying to put in practice: “Gee, let’s get a dialogue going! Let’s get to ‘Yes’ on some less fraught issues to pave the way for further agreement!” In addition, “brainstorming” is cringemakingly American. You don’t do that with people who are mad at you. You don’t do that in a crisis. Between independent entities, you do not do that at the top level. You have low level people or emissaries float ideas. So why this exercise? The worst is that Biden and Blinken come off as so disconnected from reality that they though they might get someone to accommodate US needs.

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

You're going to have to (hex)bear with me on the update this week. Have you been feeling generally pretty terrible this last month or so? So have I, and doomscrolling and archiving it all is my quasi-job at this point. Not good, folks, more and more people are saying it. I'll get over it eventually.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

So I've been a bit hooked on eating greek yogurt every morning as my breakfast, and it occurred to me today "oh shit i should check to make sure the brand i like isn't part of the BDS boycott"

So i did and not only is it not, the ceo actually seems like one who doesn't deserve to get the wall

You can "nuance" the matter all you want but at the end of the day i cant shed many tears for those acting like comprador dogs in the face of genocide, fighting with the ones facilitating it no less. When you not only make a deal with the devil but actively help him and fight for him in such situations, you are one of his demons. No matter the "libertarian socialist" or whatever coating (that so many people still buy into)

Clashes are taking place between the American forces and the SDF from areas they occupy east of the Euphrates, and between the Syrian army and its allies in the axis of resistance from their points of control west of the Euphrates.

Cornel West gets a lot of shit and rightfully so, but I just saw him essentially say that NATO aggression caused the Ukraine war on CNN. I'll have to find the clip, but shit was wild

Here's the edited version his campaign put out on his twitter. He couched it in lib statements but also included the hashtag #AbolishNATO

I'm interested if this signals any shift in the discourse at all wrt NATO, etc in the general lib populace or if this will be dismissed as wack and fanatic

Keir Starmer is battling to reassert his authority within the Labour party over the conflict in Gaza, with four shadow ministers prepared to quit in the coming days and up to 10 others on “resignation watch”.

The Labour leader is facing a rebellion by as many as a dozen shadow ministers, who sources say are ready to resign rather than vote against calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East, which Starmer has refused to back.

Several Labour MPs say they are under huge pressure from party members and constituents to take a firmer stance against the Israeli invasion of Gaza, as tens of thousands of people are expected to take part in pro-Palestinian protests in London this weekend.

A Labour official said party leaders were closely watching as many as 15 shadow ministers who have high numbers of Muslim constituents for signs they are about to quit, after the resignation of Imran Hussain on Tuesday night. None are understood to be in the shadow cabinet.

One Labour frontbencher told the Guardian:

My position has always been [that] the only way forward is a ceasefire. The pause [as advocated by Starmer] will not solve the problem. Someone needs to say enough is enough.

Another said:

I have over 600 emails on this which is more than any other subject ever, including Brexit and Covid I don’t know a Labour MP who isn’t under pressure at the moment.

Does anybody want to add some context and make some predictions? I'm American so this is all Greek to me.

Israeli military says striking Lebanon after latest cross-border attacks

The military said three Israeli soldiers had been injured by an anti-tank missile that hit a military post in the Manara area of northern Israel.

The military also said two other soldiers were wounded, one seriously, by a brought-down “hostile aircraft” that flew over Israel from Lebanon.

It said it was “currently attacking” several Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

hostile aircraft? is that just a drone?

The United Arab Emirates has announced it will establish a fully equipped field hospital in the Gaza Strip to treat wounded Palestinians, according to state media.

The state news agency reported that five aircraft carrying the equipment and requirements necessary for the establishment and operation of the field hospital departed from Abu Dhabi on Monday, heading to al-Arish airport in Egypt.

The agency said the hospital would have a capacity of 150 beds. There was no mention of whether the UAE had reached an agreement on the initiative with Israel.

Danish government-controlled broadcaster DR brought an article about an increasing number of "antisemitic incidents" worldwide due to the ongoing genocide in Palestine. They provide the following tally:

Austria: According the time Jewish community in Vienna there were 79 antisemitic incidents from October 7th to October 19th which is a 300 percent increase compared to last year.

Brazil: According to CONIB who tracks antisemitism in Brazil there has been 467 antisemitic incidents since October 7th, an increase of 961 percent compared to last year.

France: According to the French minister of the interiors Gerald Darmanin there were 1040 antisemitic incidents and 486 arrests since October 7th.

Germany: According to RIAS, an NGO who registers antisemitic incidents in Germany - from October 7th to October 15th there was an increase in antisemitic incidents of 240 percent since October 7th compared to the same period last year. 91 percent of these are anti-"Israel" related antisemitism.

South Africa: According to the South African Jewish Board of Deputies there were 41 antisemitic incidents in October which is a significant increase compared to previous years.

Great Britain: According to the Jewish community's security organisation, CST, from October 7th to 31st there has been 893 antisemitic incidents, an increase of 609 percent compared to the same 25 day period in 2022. The highest amount measured since the organisation was founded in 1984.

USA: Since October 7th ADL has registered a total of 312 antisemitic incidents between October 7th and 23rd of which 190 were directly connected to the war in "Israel" and Gaza

Reports like these are very nebulous about what constitutes an "antisemitic incident" but the numbers highlighted above suggests that most of what western propaganda calls antisemitism is in fact anti-zionism. It suggests that the term "antisemitic incident" can be anything from a swastika-waving Nazi riot to the guy in my city who has put up a "Palestinian children have the right to live" sign on his house.

Zionist propaganda has been crying wolf for decades, working hard to conflate racism against Jews with support for anticolonial struggle in Palestine. It is entirely within the realm of possibility that some idiots blames "the Jews" for the genocide, led along by zionist propaganda who conflates Judaism and Zionism, and turns to antisemitic reactions but in all likelihood the vast majority of "antisemitic incidents" is just zionist crybullies pissing and moaning about being called out for their genocidal ideas.

The final two sentences

Central Gaza hospital says it saw over 100 fatalities in one day

On a day of heavy Israeli bombardment, workers at central Gaza's Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital saw more than 100 fatalities in a single day, according to the institution's media office.

Separately, journalist Hassan Eslayeh saw dozens of casualties brought into the hospital Monday. Most came in private cars since people have not been able to call for emergency service due to the disruption in communications in Gaza.

Ambulances were seen following cars back to bombing sites and returning with more casualties.

CNN video shows more than 20 body bags lined up in front of the hospital during the day for funeral prayer. People then carried the bags into trucks and ambulances for burial.

It's always especially irritating when a Vaushite smugly argues, "The US isn't a rogue state because the US is the one who dictates the terms. We have the power to stop all the Gulf states without even trying. Remember Iraq during the Gulf War?"

Someone said that recently. I look at his profile and he posts in "noncrediblediplomacy" saying, "You can always write papers pushing against the 'colonialism' narrative. That's how I passed most of my courses in college."

Israel to begin daily four-hour pauses in fighting: US

The White House has announced that Israel has agreed to suspend fighting for four hours on a daily basis to allow for Palestinian civilians to flee from northern Gaza.

The pauses will start from today in what the White House said is a step in the right direction.

More from the White House

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby added that there will be two humanitarian corridors for people to flee from northern Gaza, and that Israel has said that there will be no military operations in those areas during those periods.

Kirby said that the White House believed that the pauses were a step in the right direction, and want them to continue for as long as they are needed.

The US aims for no less than 150 humanitarian trucks a day into Gaza.

About 100 pro-Palestine protesters have been disrupting traffic at an Ascot Vale intersection as thousands of punters continue to make their way to Flemington Racecourse ahead of the running of the Cup, according to police.

Police say the protesters arrived about 11am at the Epsom Road, Ascot Vale Road and Racecourse Road roundabout and caused traffic disruptions.

Two protesters, including a woman who climbed onto the roof of a white van and refused to get down, were pepper-sprayed and arrested, according to police.

Police say the incident remains ongoing, with about 80 protesters at the scene, and they have arranged for the van to be towed away.
