I will now that I realize it exists. I always thought dunk and egg would adapt well.
It would be foolish to say, definitively, that after only three half-hour episodes I’m certain that this is by far the best on-screen adaption of any of George Martin’s work.
But it is.
I liked season one of HOTD well enough, but I had constant reservations about the show throughout. At first it was just little things, like I thought the tone or pacing or scripting in this or that scene were just a little off. Then there were some bigger missteps but it was never enough to overshadow the good parts of the season. Season two was a considerable drop in the quality of the writing, but the rest of the production held fast. Taking the two seasons together, if they were the sum of HOTD I’d say the show ranks somewhere between season 4 and 5 (S4 and S5) of GOT. The highs of HOTD are never quite as good as S4 but they are better than those of S5, and an inverse relationship for the lows. And of course GOT itself can be ranked sequentially best to worst, 1 to 8, except you swap 2 and 3 around because Qarth is quite bad in season 2.
But AKOTSK… I have a lot of fondness for GOT S1–3, but you can tell there are a lot of compromises made that alter the feel of the work overall. Whereas A Knight… is just hitting on all cylinders. The tone, the acting, the action, the score, the COSTUMES. It really feels like Martin’s vision come to life.
Also that montage with Egg and the horse was peak in ep 3
Love it, grounded and funny in a way the other got shows never were
Yeah that has been my vibe as well. Would love more adaptation of the universe in this vein. For big epic gritty fantasy I would also love to see someone adapt the Powder Mage series. It starts with a fantasy world's version of the french revolution and the titular "powder mages" are basically magic musketeers who snort gunpowder to turn into the 18th century france version of Neo/John Wick. It slaps.
How were the sequels? I read Promise of Blood and enjoyed it but then moved on to other stuff instead.
I really enjoyed the whole series. Also the grill pilled "god" is a great bit.
They gotta film s2 and 3 asap to keep Egg's actor from pulling a Bran and growing 6 feet.
lmao fr. God he is so good though I can't wait to see his acting develop.
No, but reading this thread is tempting me to check it out. I never bothered with HOTD, but I guess it doesn't hurt to throw AKOTSK on the server
I'm patiently waiting until they finish the season to binge watch. I'm not into the weekly <40 min episode format.
its hard to fuck up i'll give them that
i wasn't planning on it, but ended up getting into it. i like it and the general focus on the lives of the "smallfolk". haven't read the books for this and like not knowing where its going, but i might after this season.
i like the focusing on the perspective of relatable people of limited means living their lives. i was pretty blase about the dragon stories. the lifestyles and dramas of the rich and shameless does little for me.
Egg especially is so damn good.
Was considering watching it with some friends tonight.
Just finished Episode 3 and the jousting tourney has started in earnest and it was easily the best episode yet.
Didn't realise it was out, love the books, will give it a watch hopefully they didn't fuck it
no
Who'd have thought the best dragon show would be the one without the dragons
It's pretty damn good, it feels much more... human than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon do
it feels much more... human than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon do
100% and that is I think why it pulled me in so quickly. GRRM built a very meticulous world and it would be great to get more slice of life type stuff out of it. There are soooo many microcosms to explore.
No but I'll check it out (not like how I told you I'd check out Fallout). I was actually enjoying HotD for whatever its flaws because it felt like they weren't quite as up their own ass about owning the epic behemoth IP, if that makes sense. Kind of like what FlakesBongler said about this series compared to GoT or HotD ironically. I wish we'd have gotten those last two episodes of season 2, I am always ready for some fantasy medieval naval engagements and Abigail Thorn is serving [user was intercepted by v*lcel police before finishing this thought, carry on citizens]
.
I kind of didn't think about AKotSK even thought I saw ads for it because I thought, oh they're going to try to keep milking this. But if it is more of a human-level experience in the ASOIAF world, that actually does sound enjoyable. It's been .... a decade?!
since I read the books but I like how GRRM breathes life into all the small folk who are getting absolutely steamrolled by events.
those last two episodes of season 2
Wait what?
Unless I am mistaken, S2 of House of the Dragon was planned to have two more episodes. Those were cut because of scheduling restraints around the writer's strike. This would have included a big naval battle around King's Landing? I think, it's been a minute.
It's not 100% known why the episode count was reduced so late in the process, but it likely had something to do with the actors and writers strikes of 2023 making production more difficult. To ensure that House of the Dragon season 2 still got out in a timely manner, HBO may have lopped off a couple episodes at the end.
Damn I did not know that. I would have loved to see more of the naval stuff too. One of my favorite parts of the books was Euron Greyjoy and his mysterious journey to and back from the smoking sea.
The plot beats from the cut episodes are very impactful to the story, so they have to put them into the beginning of s3 in some form.
I'm enjoying it quite a bit! I liked the original stories too and I wish George would write more.
Success has made it too easy for him to get what he wanted out of life
Sandwiches and accolades
As much as I enjoy the show, ASOIAF might be finished now if it had never been adapted to TV, and I'd rather live in that world.
I think he was always heading for this.
His editor should have reined him in a decade or two ago. The Mereenese Knot was their last big moment to intervene or for GRRM to swallow his pride and reach out for help. He might have had that in Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham at one point but that boat has loooong since sailed.
He needed a collaborator or a ghostwriter.
He's a gardener and he doesn't know when to prune shit back so now he doesn't have a storyline anymore, he has an overgrown jungle of weeds that is so interlocking that there is no path forward but hacking it all down to the roots, except he cannot do that for obvious reasons.
If he had a good editor who put him in a shorter leash, they could have told him to axe storylines and characters here and there to avoid this mess but now the current situation makes the Mereeneese Knot look like a bowtie.
The one way that the series is semi-recoverable is if GRRM took players off the board and sent them to faraway lands to gallivant or to go study cloistered away from the plot and things like that, where the narrative streams past them but never touches them again for the main books (except maybe in passing nods or throwaway mentions). Then what GRRM could have done is to write that characters story as a spinoff novella, like a Dunk & Egg book, so that he can flesh out their plot without leaving it as a loose end but also he can finish the damn book without being so tied up that he has no room to move. Except he is far too prideful and he lacks the self-control and maybe even the self-awareness to know that this is the one hail mary option left to him to get himself out of a hole that he has been digging for himself with every chapter he wrote since at least the first book.
Supposedly he is working on a last book in the Dunk & Egg saga but much like the original I wouldn't hold my breath.
He's been working on a Dunk and Egg story called The She-Wolves of Winterfell" (sounds dope) for like fifteen years
I wish George would write more.
A sentiment that echoes throughout the decades.
If I never hear about this fucking setting again it'll be too soon.
