That only took for-fucking-ever
Disposables would never have been the problem they are today if it wasnt for the blind regulatory stabs they were taking to “protect the children”. All those regulations banning vape shops and liquid mixing, or sales by mail.
Back in the day, disposable vape shit was a terrible waste of money that was not enticing to anyone. Reasonable devices that didnt waste massive amounts of batteries or plastic were the norm. You would just change coils. The US government basically banned that from existing and let the disposables run wild. So now instead of buying and tossing a small bit of metal and cotton every once and a while, you buy and toss the entire fucking device. Its one of the most clear cut modern examples of poorly thought out regulation making a problem infinitely worse in every way than it ever originally was.
Only people with motivation to quit cigs and people who nerd out about gear were ever gonna keep using the old style vapes. Everyone else might hit it and quit it eventually. Now the disposables have hooked an entire generation of kids because they arent such a pain in the ass to use or procure
I hate that the disposables are so much better than the old method too. You get the perfect hit every time. This is true for both nicotine and weed vapes. They need to be banned. They're too good for how wasteful they are.
Can't upvote this post enough! There was a clear strategy through misleading information and regulation to shove the ecig market to the big players (Tobaco industry). And those big players used that to get the youth hooked on their shitty disposable vapes. It could have been a tool to help many many smokers. But it was enshityfied like everything the big industry lobbies touch.
Very succinct. Agreed this is exactly what's happening. And in a few dozen years we're going to be destroying some new habitat for more copper and lithium mines, partially due to our failures to properly re-use stuff.
As a filthy vape user / hey at least I don't smoke cigarettes anymore:
Fucking good.
Disposables are an environmental nightmare, you can get a similarly sized, refillable vape for maybe twice the cost of one single use pod, but then after that you're only replacing pod+coils and refilling with juice you can buy as well.
Doing it that way is cheaper in the longrun for a vaper, is at least better for the environment, and also makes it so its probably more trouble than its worth for every small shop to stock a set of reusable vapes and pods and juice... which makes it less convenient, now you gotta go to a specialty shop, and making it less convenient for kids to newly get addicted to nicotine is a good fucking thing.
(for the record, no i do not use some insane rig that blows clouds of 'vape'... i use a roughly 4 inch long vape that barely makes any visible cloud in all but basically film noir detective's officr lighting conditions)
Importers and manufacturers need to be liable for the full price of waste disposal for their products. It will keep happening.
Anyone who lived during the time where cigarette smoking was prominent and it was common to see butts all over the place has to be amazed how vapes created far worse of a problem, not only with the waste, but the danger with the lithium batteries. And wasn't vapes supposed to be solely for weaning people off nicotine originally, but then MONEY, hey we can get people addicted to these! Where were the regulations to prevent such a mess? And I hope current vape users aren't offended, but it's still a nasty habit, and I've gotten vapor clouds blown my direction even worse than I used to get cigarette smoke. It's almost like they want to share it with you to show they're cool.
Hi, I vape. You're not wrong at all. One day I will quit, but for now it's a psychological crutch (and physical addiction) that is less bad for me than the pack+ a day I smoked for like 9 or 10 years. I didn't take your message as an attack, for the record. Just giving context for the rest. I would never intentionally blow vape in anyone's face and have gone to great lengths to avoid doing so. The only exception to this has been with partners and friends where it's an in thing.
Those same people would have probably blown cigarette smoke in your face, but there was such a negative social connotation. For some reason, people who vape seem to think that because it's not smoke they are magically allowed to blow it in your face now and 'look cool '. For some reason not enough people are decking these individuals, so we're not building that negative connotation properly.
Maybe some of these people are too young to even know that blowing cigarette smoke in someone's face is rude? I'm in my 30s. That feels like more benefit of the doubt than I'm willing to give the overwhelming majority.
I think caffiene is a worse habbit, wouldnt touch the stuff
I'm not sure if this ban is actually going to work. I've heard rumors that manufacturers of these are just going to start putting USB ports on them and making them technically "refillable" with no plans to actually really support that so people will keep treating them as disposable anyway.
Good
How about all nicotine products in general?
I would probably take decades to do but it should've been done long ago
Rishi Sunak and now Labour are trying to phase out smoking and vaping completely. If passed, anyone born after 1 January 2009 cannot be legally sold cigarettes. It was in the Labour's manifesto during the past general election. Also see this BBC report.
