He had not yet heard the term, according to a senior White House official who acknowledged to CNN that the president was caught off guard. Trump had said as much at the time, saying “I’ve never heard that” before calling it the “nastiest question.”

“He thought the reporter was calling him a chicken,” the official said, adding that Trump was “reasonably” frustrated with the phrase.

The acronym was coined in early May by a Financial Times columnist and is now used as shorthand by some on Wall Street to indicate that traders shouldn’t fret too much about Trump’s tariff threats, since he usually backs down.

Why the fuck did it take so long for people to start asking him actual questions?

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 214 points 10 months ago

He illegally kicked out unfriendly media

[-] mr_rusty_shackleford@lemmy.world 47 points 10 months ago

In the past 24 hours the Elon drug use has come from the NYT and this is coming from CNBC. I’m calling bullshit on that excuse.

[-] GorGor@startrek.website 35 points 10 months ago

And they need to keep asking questions that piss him off.

[-] electricyarn@lemmy.world 30 points 10 months ago

Elon has been ousted by Trump insiders, perhaps that is why he is getting bad press.

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

The timing says everything. Elon is ‘out’ and media is throwing shade to pull negative sentiment from trump. Otherwise would have done it earlier. Mainstream media that is

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago

Musk was always meant as a lightning rod for Trump's tariffs and doge cuts, nothing more

[-] Numenor@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago

The New York Times, NPR, NBC, Reuters, Bloomberg, and Politico have been removed or had their access to briefings limited. Replaced with friendly right wing news sources. The Elon Ketamine use news is from an NYT article, the TACO phrase was from a Financial Times article.

Our fucking president throws a hissy every "though" question, wait "nasty" question. Starts to insult the reporter and dodges the question in the end. Or just giving a nonsensical answer.

Relies on catchphrases on his socials for support.

What a fucking joke.

Um... yeah. Most of us outside of the media's self-imposed truth filter already knew there's a reason for it - because he's a thin-skinned crybaby.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

Chicken skin is quite fragile

[-] redlemace@lemmy.world 46 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

this always comes to mind when hearing/reading about the trump taco

[-] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 months ago

As someone who was practically raised on tacos, the way he eats tacos is… Annoying. It’s basically the way northern Americans eat what they call Tex-mex, which typically results in a huge mess. Tipping the taco in one direction or the other results in it spilling, so you’re supposed to tip your head instead. It means your elbow is usually sticking out more, with your arm basically parallel to the floor. Whereas his is basically resting on the table.

At least he leaned over the plate. That’s the other big rookie move people make, and then they end up with food all over their lap.

[-] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Are people misinterpreting your comment as a legit criticism of Obama? Or are they reading a tone where there isn't any? (Maybe the word "annoying" colored the rest of their perception? It's not how I read it, I'm trying to make sense of the downvotes.)

I thought you were providing your own regional informational tidbit (and a useful one for me, since I usually avoid hard-shelled tacos due to the mess I make.) This advice sounds helpful and I'll be trying it next time I order Tex-mex.

[-] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 10 months ago

No clue. My guess is that since conservatives turned the smallest things into scandals, people are extra sensitive about any perceived criticism of him.

It’s annoying in the same way an Italian would get pissed if you broke your spaghetti in half before dropping it into the boiling water. Does it actually matter? No. It’s just something common that natives see and go “fucking really?”

I heard he once ate a taco while also wearing a tan suit. I gasped in horror.

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago

TBF, that's not even a taco. He just put some of his food on a tortilla. It's a common thing to do in Mexican culture.

Because he's insecure.

[-] Suavevillain@lemmy.world 39 points 10 months ago

The US President being able to be raged baited into destroying what is left of the economy is something else.

[-] tartarin@lemm.ee 27 points 10 months ago

He calls that negotiation. That's why China ignores him. He doesn't have the actual authority to play that game since tariffs are to be voted by the Congress to be effective. Sooner or later his house of cards will scramble. He is relying on this false pretense of emergency to bypass the Congress for now to play his stupid negotiation game.

[-] lucelu2@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago

I don't understand how this can be predicated on an "emergency" of fentanyl being transported over the border when he is actively pardoning domestically incarcerated cartel members and escorting their families over the border and handing them green cards (for a $$$$ price).

[-] tartarin@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

The whole fentanyl story is bullshit and serves one purpose: ruling by executive orders.

In fact, there is more fentanyl crossing the border from the USA to Canada than the reverse. This administration is lying all the time to avoid power balance mechanisms of the Constitution.

He tends to get angry when he's called out.

[-] ninjabard@lemmy.world 15 points 10 months ago

Like narcissistic assholes do.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 25 points 10 months ago

referring DJT to a "foreign" food is the greatest insult to trump.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

Trevor Noah has a hilarious bit about tacos from years ago where he calls tacos "the most American food that there is."

[-] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 24 points 10 months ago
[-] ech@lemm.ee 19 points 10 months ago

The real answer is "He's a narcissist". This is just parroting his handler's bullshit damage control.

[-] magnetosphere@fedia.io 19 points 10 months ago

Guess what? Fucking with the entire national (and, to an extent, global) economy isn’t usually a good way to negotiate. That’s why other presidents didn’t do it frequently. He’s a bull in a china shop, and even some of his supporters are sick of it.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 19 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

It's because he's a narcissist and it goes against his self image of a strongman who is respected, worshipped, and feared.

[-] randompasta@lemmy.today 19 points 10 months ago

In the White House every day is TACO Tuesday!

[-] guyoverthere123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 10 months ago

Donald Trump has very thin skin.

Everyone around him knows it.

World leaders know it as well.

Trump’s an orange chicken and he’s stupid as hell!

Ooh, mamacita, he sees the economy fell!

Stock prices falling, and others are giving us flack!

Ooh, orange chicken’s having a TACO attaaaaaaaaack! 🎵 🎶

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Because he always acts this way when someone asks him a question he doesn't like. Refuses to answer, then gaslights and calls them "nasty". Typical narcissist shit.

Oh... I know EXACTLY why he got angry. The truth hurts, don't it, Donny?

[-] wanderwisley@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago

Trump taco sounds lewd

[-] bender223@lemmy.today 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

If trump always chickens out, might it also be appropriate to call him Orange Chicken? 🤭

Edit: someone already mentioned orange chicken

Please stop making fun of trump, he gonna ban tacos!!!
