Benjamin J. Davis, born on this day in 1903, was American lawyer and communist who was elected in 1943 to the New York City Council, representing Harlem. Davis was persecuted by the state via the anti-communist Smith and McCarran Acts.

Davis became radicalized through his role as defense attorney in the 1933 trial of Angelo Herndon, a 19-year-old black communist who had been charged "attempting to incite insurrection" because he tried to organize a farm workers' union.

In 1949, Davis was among a number of communist leaders prosecuted for violating the Smith Act. He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. In 1962 Davis was charged with violating the Internal Security Act (also known as the McCarran Act), but died before the case could come to trial.

"Whether one agrees with the Communist Party or not, one must at least know the truth about it. One must not permit his ideas to be shaped by the hysteria which now passes as a 'crusade against Communism'... For example, the canard that every Communist has his pockets lined with 'Moscow gold.' If that were true, one could be sure that there would scarcely be any room in our party for workers. The capitalists, to whom gold is god of the universe, would crowd them out."

I'm really glad I took like, a long time to seriously consider my gender situation. I ended up at somewhere close to cis (in practice) anyway, but it was a good learning experience. I think more people would benefit from a close examination of their identity, even if it can be difficult.

Anyway, I picked [any] as pronouns when I first got on here, before it was mandatory. It's always been a point of, "I'm me." And a sort of abdication of gender. I like when I'm included as one of the girls. I like when I can participate in guy time. Maybe that seems obvious. Maybe it seems greedy. But I'm just here.

its never greedy to be yourself, its beautiful. Never doubt that!

Imagine, if you will, the "cool robot" meme, but instead of a Gundam it's Shadowheart from Baldur's Gate 3, and she is shooting a guiding bolt over the head of a person who says "wow, cults are bad", but the bolt going over his head says "bangs are an evil haircut"

Some mod authors are such babies man

If you make edits to a preexisting work and then throw a hissy fit about intellectual property you're a doo doo head. Sucks that the best UI mod for FNV is made and maintained by one such dork

My body is a machine that turns disoriented thoughts and swirling sense of unease into waking up at 6am for work without an alarm clock again.

despite getting my name change legally a long time ago, I still find myself thinking, "huh this name sounds nice, I would liked to be called that" sometimes. and I kind of realized no one stopping me from doing that. I still like the name I change my name to, but no one stopping me from having an unofficial official second name. so why not.

Street photography is an interesting beast. But here in the middle of times square I wonder why ANYONE would want to shoot here. Boring, boorish lumps of people with all their dreams beaten out of them. Wrapped in commercialization.

Canned diced tomatoes are dog shit. There has never, ever been an instance i've seen them used where some other form of tomato wouldn't have just been straight up better. They are just practically flavorless, gross, and imo should never be used for anything.

This eggplant pomodoro sauce would have been 10x better if they just used crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, or straight up marinara imo. Or at least run the whole thing through an immersion blender

CW: Mental HealthI'm a sports enjoyer and I'm going to an AFL finals (playoff series type thing) match today. I've woken up to this:

Membrey ruled out of Elimination Final

St Kilda Football Club has this morning confirmed with the AFL and the GWS Giants the late omission of Tim Membrey for today’s elimination final.

Membrey is currently receiving appropriate care and treatment due to a personal health matter.

He will be replaced in the side by Anthony Caminiti.

Tim’s health and wellbeing is our primary concern and the Club asks that Tim and the Membrey family’s privacy is respected at this time.

The Club will not be making any further comment as it focusses on the match later today.

Fuck. The wording of this statement, especially in the context of sporting injuries and australian sports reporting, is not good. I hope the dude is alright

Spending my Friday night making earrings and listening to the lectures of Parenti.

I have my setup for paints and decorations on my desk and today I was putting some bling on the earrings so I had a little pile of rainbow coloured glitter on my desk on a piece of paper.

Suddenly a very roudy pair of house flies lands straight in the middle of the pile of glitter whilst "doing the deed", the glitter flew absolutely everywhere.

It was so surreal I had to share the experience.
