It's honestly not as far-fetched as it may seem. Father Robert Ballecer lives in the Vatican for most of the year, and that dude is very tech savvy. He set up the Vatican Minecraft server and is a regular attendee to the Black Hat security conference. He's also got a record in enterprise IT, including for the Vatican, an interest in privacy, and a presence on the fediverse already.
It might not be reality, but it wouldn't be strikingly unusual if he did start up a Vatican Mastodon instance or a Pixelfed or something.
