Image is of many Hamas soldiers supervising the handing over of Israeli hostages to cars heading out of the Gaza Strip.

After 15 months of genocide - and resistance to it - the Israeli regime realized that they could not win a military victory against Hamas, and were forced to sign a humiliating ceasefire in order to get their hostages returned.

With much of Syria under the control of Al-Qaeda, and an increasing level of covert infiltration into Lebanon, the crisis in the Middle East is not over, and we may still be in its beginning stages, as the center of hegemony continues its gradual shift away from the United States. Their navy, once considered the best in the world, is likely also not very happy about their ships and aircraft carriers being forced to retreat by Yemen, one of the poorest countries; and all eyes are on Iran, who has, over the last year and a half, demonstrated a newfound confidence and strength to directly strike Israel.

The recovery for Gaza will take, at a minimum, decades; it could indeed never fully recovery to even how it was before, considering it is not in Israel's interests to see their concentration camps recover. But Hamas has proven to be steadfast and the tunnel network has proven its resilience, despite facing some of the most powerful conventional bombing in history. This shows that Palestine's liberation is a when, not an if; and hopefully a much sooner "when" than expected before October 7th.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Chat, is Hexbear accessible in Belarus? Lukashenko spent his 7th (Gaius Marius speedrun any%) re-election speechtelling China to step up. Is he lurking in the news mega?

"We sent greetings and congratulations to Xi Jinping and his family. [...] I won't repeat the cliches about happiness, health and success. I'll just say one thing: You must endure. Today, the future of multipolarity on our planet depends on you. If China holds strong - and I'm confident it will - we are ready to work together on this. [...] We need multipolarity. A unipolar world cannot ensure prosperity for all nations."

Well it seems that despite the brave face and fiery rhetoric from Colombia, they have completely folded on the key issue towards the United States, the issue of the freedom of navigation for US military aircraft in Colombia. United States military aircraft are allowed to fly into Colombia unrestricted, including to deport migrants, according to a statement from the White House. In exchange, the sanctions and tarrifs on Colombia are placed in reserve, and the visa restrictions will be lifted as soon as the first US plane lands. Colombian president Gustavo Petro reposted this statement on twitter, before quickly deleting the repost.

Axios News: Trump pausing Colombia tariffs after migrants deal, White House says, 27 January 2025

So now the question is what does this mean for México, will they also fold to the US and allow US military transport aircraft to fly deportation flights inside their airspace? Colombia only managed to resist for half a day, and got made an example of quickly. The warning is loud and clear. The United States is prepared to follow through on their threats. Trump is actually serious about this, or at least playing the part. México don't really have many options here. I also think these kind of power moves will be very popular amongst the average US citizen, so there can be no reliance on any internal resistance to stop it.

Trump is "not confident" that the ceasefire in Gaza will last, CNN reports. "I'm not sure. This is not our war, this is their war," the US president said from the Oval Office.

He noted that after 15 months of bombing, Gaza had become like a "place of mass destruction" and would have to be "rebuilt from scratch." CNN notes that the peace deal with Hamas has left "extremist right-wing Israeli politicians" unhappy, believing that the ceasefire was a capitulation.

Netanyahu said on Sunday that "both President Trump and President Biden fully supported Israel's right to resume hostilities if Israel concludes that Phase B negotiations are futile." Let us recall that today Israel announced the beginning of an Israeli "counter-terrorist operation" in the West Bank of the Jordan River, which is controlled by the Palestinian Authority.

Fico said that a third of the participants in mass protests in Slovakia are Ukrainians who oppose the Slovak government. According to the Slovak Prime Minister, people at the protests were deceived by the organizers. Fico also said he would not resign, despite demands from tens of thousands of people across Slovakia. "Ukraine will never be in NATO, and if you listen to the statements of some politicians recently, it will have huge problems joining the EU" - Fico

The US/EU wants to remove the Socially Conservative SocDem PM because he's against the War in Ukraine?

Syria to dismantle Assad-era socialism, says foreign minister at Davos

spoilerSyria’s new rulers plan to privatise state-owned ports and factories, invite foreign investment and boost international trade in an economic overhaul designed to end decades as a pariah state, the country’s foreign minister told the Financial Times.

“[Assad’s] vision was that of a security state. Ours is of economic development,” said Asaad al-Shaibani in a wide-ranging interview in Damascus, his first with the international press. “There needs to be law and there need to be clear messages to open the way for foreign investors, and to encourage Syrian investors to return to Syria.”

Shaibani spoke to the FT ahead of an appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, the first time Syria will participate in the annual meeting of global decision makers. He will use the trip to renew calls to lift punishing Assad-era sanctions, which he says will prevent Syria’s economic recovery and thwart the “clear readiness” of other countries to invest.

While western nations have been quick to engage, many say they are waiting to see if the new leaders will act on their lofty promises before easing sanctions.

The minister is one of the key figures in the new caretaker government and is close to the country’s de facto ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Jolani. Sharaa’s Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham led the offensive that toppled former dictator Bashar al-Assad in December.

In the weeks since, Shaibani said technocrats and former Assad-era civil servants have worked to uncover the damage done to the country and its coffers by the regime, which ran a closed socialist economy.

This includes the discovery of $30bn in debt to former Assad allies Iran and Russia, non-existent foreign reserves at the central bank, a bloated public sector payroll and the decline of industries like agriculture and manufacturing, neglected and undermined by corrupt Assad-era policies.

Shaibani acknowledged that the challenges ahead were enormous and would take years to address. He said a committee was being set up to study Syria’s economic condition and infrastructure and would focus on privatisation efforts, including of oils, cotton and furniture factories.

He also said they would explore public-private partnerships to encourage investment into airports, railways and roads. The challenge, however, will be finding buyers for entities that have been in decay for years in a shattered country cut off from foreign investment

How could they invite foreign investments when the country is destroyed, sanctioned and with all the trade wars that's going to happen under Trump?

Syria needs a larger public sector.

POV: I'm in a "completely useless sack of shit" competition and UN peacekeepers show up
https://africanstream.media/un-peacekeepers-abandoning-goma-residents/

With Goma in east DRC now surrounded by Rwanda-backed rebels after the fall of Sake on Thursday, videos emerged online of what‘s claimed to be UN troops leaving the region. It’s left people furious that supposed peacekeepers are leaving a city of 2 million (plus the influx of people fleeing the surrounding towns and villages) in the lurch.

The main objective of UN operations has been to protect Congolese civilians from armed groups and to support government efforts to stabilise eastern Congo. However, there have been growing protests against the mission over its abject failure to secure those goals. There are now fears that the M23 could capture Goma again, as they did in 2012.

Convicted US Capitol rioter turns down Trump pardon - BBC

One of the people who served jail time for taking part in the US Capitol riot four years ago has refused a pardon from President Donald Trump, saying: "We were wrong that day." Pamela Hemphill, who pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 days in prison, told the BBC that there should be no pardons for the riot on 6 January 2021.

"Accepting a pardon would only insult the Capitol police officers, rule of law and, of course, our nation," she said. "I pleaded guilty because I was guilty, and accepting a pardon also would serve to contribute to their gaslighting and false narrative." Hemphill, who was nicknamed the "Maga granny" by social media users - in reference to Trump's "make America great again" slogan - said she saw the Trump government as trying to "rewrite history and I don't want to be part of that".

"We were wrong that day, we broke the law - there should be no pardons," she told the BBC World Service's Newsday programme. Trump's decision to pardon or commute the sentences of nearly 1,600 people involved in the attempt to violently overturn the 2020 election came just hours into his presidency.

In a news conference on Tuesday at the White House, he said: "These people have already served years in prison, and they've served them viciously. "It's a disgusting prison. It's been horrible. It's inhumane. It's been a terrible, terrible thing." However, the move has drawn an uneasy reaction from some Republican politicians.

Senator Thom Tillis, from North Carolina, said he "just can't agree" with the move, adding that it "raises legitimate safety issues on Capitol Hill". Another Republican US senator, James Lankford from Oklahoma, told CNN: "I think we need to continue to say we are a party of law and order." He added: "I think if you attack a police officer, that's a very serious issue and they should pay a price for that."

This is not the first instance of someone refusing a pardon and it is within an individual's right to refuse under the US Constitution, the supreme Court previously ruled, according to Cornell Law School. Also among those pardoned was one of the riot's most recognisable figures, Jacob Chansley, the self-styled QAnon Shaman, who was released from jail in 2023 after serving 27 months of his 41-month jail sentence.

He told the BBC that he heard the news from his lawyer while he was at the gym. He added: "I walked outside and I screamed 'freedom' at the top of my lungs and then gave a good Native American war cry."

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-01-06/the-energy-outlook-europe-s-summer-to-bring-worries-about-next-winter-s-gas

https://archive.is/0fiV3

Europe’s Summer Will Bring Worries About Next Winter’s Gas

The reasons are twofold. First, Ukraine – understandably — didn’t renew at the end of 2024 a transit contract that allowed its archenemy Russia to ship gas into Europe via its pipelines. Russia doesn’t sell as much gas into Europe as it once did, but Moscow has remained an important supplier for countries including Slovakia, Austria, Italy, Czechia and Hungary. The loss of that Russian gas will force Europe to rely more heavily on other sources, such as US liquefied natural gas and its own storage.

Definitely not because US asked Ukraine to not renew.

The tariffs on MX/CA are going to be REALLY bad

Like, wouldn't this kill neoliberalism in the US? At least severely weaken it? And it'll fuck over workers everywhere

Hopefully Sheinbaum nationalizes any shuttered manufacturing plants, to minimize their losses somewhat

As clansman in chief quickly realizes the instability of the status quo and goes for the genocide accelerator:

You’re talking about probably a million and a half people. And we just clean out that whole thing. Over the centuries it’s had many, many conflicts, that site. And I don’t know, something has to happen.

Some people were paying attention to the 1.5 million number. Out of 2.4 million 16 months ago.

One a more hopeful note, if what I read is true, and the Arab regimes are not that stable, things could escalate very quickly if he tries to use the finesse he's bringing to his mandate.

Direction – Social Democracy (Slovak: Smer – sociálna demokracia, Smer–SD), also commonly referred to as Smer, is a left-wing nationalist and left-wing populist political party in Slovakia led by the incumbent prime minister Robert Fico. The party identifies as social-democratic, and was described as a combination of "leftist economics and nationalist appeal".

Fico has promised to cut all aid to Ukraine as a result of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, and has promised to block Ukrainian accession to NATO should the subject be broached under his tenure. Fico has also stated that the Ukrainian government is run by neo-Nazis.

In the 2000s, the party opposed the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan, and organized the withdrawal of 110 Slovak soldiers that were deployed in Iraq. In its foreign policy manifesto, Smer calls for understanding with countries "with a form of government other than parliamentary democracy", referring to China and Vietnam. In 2007, Fico made an official state visit to the then leader of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, "discussing the fight against world imperialism"

In October 2023, Smer was suspended from the Party of European Socialists (PES) and the affiliated Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) European Parliament group., following its formation of a coalition government with the Slovak National Party. Smer subsequently declined to join the Fidesz-led Patriots for Europe group, stating that it would not join a non-leftist group. In September 2024, Smer began negotiations with two other parties in the Non-Inscrits, the German Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht and the Czech Stačilo!, on establishing cooperation between left-wing conservative parties.

So, they are just a social democrat party that is a bit critical of the US and EU, and at the same time they get to hang out with cool people?

From the FT

Donald Trump in fiery call with Denmark’s prime minister over Greenland

Donald Trump insisted he was serious in his determination to take over Greenland in a fiery telephone call with Denmark’s prime minister, according to senior European officials.

...

They added that Trump had been aggressive and confrontational following the Danish prime minister’s comments that the island was not for sale, despite her offer of more co-operation on military bases and mineral exploitation.
“It was horrendous,” said one of the people. Another added: “He was very firm. It was a cold shower. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But I do think it is serious, and potentially very dangerous.”
The details of the call are likely to deepen European concerns that Trump’s return to power will strain transatlantic ties more than ever, as the US president heaps pressure on allies to give up territory.

“The intent was very clear. They want it. The Danes are now in crisis mode,” said one person briefed on the call. Another said: “The Danes are utterly freaked out by this.”
A former Danish official added: “It was a very tough conversation. He threatened specific measures against Denmark such as targeted tariffs.”

Not gonna lie, I find it genuinely hilarious how worms like Mette Frederiksen and other Altlantists still dream that they are independent when they are actually complete vassal states of the American empire. Vassals that America has shown time and time again will be discarded whenever the empire feels like it.

According to Trump's deputy chief of staff, around 100 decrees and executive actions are expected to be signed today at the White House after the inauguration ceremony, including measures against immigration, LGBT people and women.

Diversity, equity, inclusion and gender policies will be repealed through executive orders. The functional stability of federal employees will be eliminated in the first hours of government. Trump will declare a “National Emergency” on the border with Mexico to unblock Defense funds.

The “Remain in Mexico” policy will be reinstated along the lines of his first term. It pressured the Mexican government to stop the flow of migrants at the country's border, since migrants who entered with asylum claims were returned to Mexico until their asylum was granted.
