Oh my god. My Wii will be old enough to vote in a few months. I got it a month or so after its release date.

I should set it up again and play some Metroid Prime Trilogy. The backported motion-control gun aiming makes the first two games a joy to play.

Some zoomer talks about Xbox 360 as retro games, NO ONLY 3RD TO FIFTH GEN biden-ok-smart-guy

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Sorry, only Zoomers and younger refer to console generations by number. I don't make the rules, it's just because they learned all this stuff from Wikipedia rather than experiencegrillman

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The console generation numbers always weird me out, because the start of time - console gen that was out when I was born - is considered "third gen" instead of first.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't even know what separates the first two generations of home consoles - it's just an amorphous blob of Ataris and Collecovisons, and other shit I've vaguely heard about but never played.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Second Gen was mostly defined by swappable cartridges instead of built in games

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So the old Pong and video pinball games were first gen, and the Atari consoles are second - makes sense!

Some Brazilian company has the right idea lol

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Isn't that tied into they have the rights to manufacture the Genesis in Brazil, and import fees make other consoles super fucking expensive?

TecToy used to be Sega representative in Brazil. They used to translate games in Brazilian Portuguese (very rare during the 90's) and make some games/hack roms about popular Latino movie/comic/series characters like Monica (Popular Brazilian Comic series that started during the 1960's about kids going in adventures, even have a Manga version) and El Chavo/El Chapulin Colorado (Mexican comedy Superhero, very popular all over Latin America). I think they were pretty much Sega of Brazil during this time (I believe nintendo simply didn't give a shit about Brazil so it was a huge market for Sega and eventually Sony), and went on as far as give support for the dreamcast (theres a popular 2000's copypasta about the guy in Brazil who really "liked" his dreamcast and asked tectoy for help after he spilled some suspecious thing into his dreamcast lol.)

I think they still release these cheap NES and Mastersystem/MegaDrive clones in South America to this day, mostly retrogamers buy these nowadays, since you can easily find and buy PS2, Gamecube and original Xbox in any eletronics selling place. I never heard about the Zeebo so no idea wtf is that. Nowadays it seems like videogames got cheaper (or the 1980 - 1990's Gamer culture in Brazil are now all old and have jobs), enough for games to be dubbed and adapted for the Brazilian markets.

I'm not too familiar with it, but I imagine that sounds about right. I just think it'd be super dope to have people design new games for old hardware.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

From what I've found on Wikipedia, it looks like they've moved more into other electronics, but still make plug-and-plays of the Master System and Genesis that have remained decently popular.

They're also the company behind the Zeebo, which was a legendary mess of a console that has had somewhat of a second life from internet acclaim.

For anyone interested in digging deeper into the Tectoy rabbit hole: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tectoy

Why do they call them consoles if this image offers me no consolation??

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

can't get any consolation because everything is too PC nowdays

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 month ago (2 children)

This one speaks to an old like me even more

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The PS4 is ten years old now

cringe

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ps5 is 5 years old already

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

And it’s really no different from the ps4 in any meaningful sense. Planned obsolescence stays winning

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

TIL I can legally fuck my ps3

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It says insert disc. DISC.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

Insert Dick In System Component

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago

The PS3 slaps as a retro console. Lots of great games, the last good UI (Because it was before everything was advertising), cheap to get games for. Good console all around, just buy one and chuck in a new drive (an SSD can slightly improve things)

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago

eventually you get so old that they’re both 18 years old

I'm still rocking my 25 year old N64 with the translucent purple controller. I have an older NES too, but it doesn't get as much play time. Both are one owner!

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If you don't have too much stick drift on that controller it's worth so much more than any solid color if you need extra cash at any point you could easily flip it into another controller and some money.

Random thought i suppose lol

This just made me think of the ~2005 "viral marketing" ad for the Sony PSP. Some British chav doing a rap about wanting a PSP. One of the earlier astroturfing campaigns. Couldn't find a link

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I remember hearing Take Me Out by Frwnz Ferdidand for the first time in a psp commercial

Edit: I'm not making any edit Frwnz Ferdidand is a way better band name

If it's a home console and can render hardware accelerated textured polygons with a display resolution greater than 480i, it isn't retro. Anyone who thinks i'm open to arguments on this can go stick their head in a pig

why, this is violence

Ouch. This one actually hurts.

I grew up with an atari 2600, that's still 'retrogames' to me, everything else is 'modern'.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

yea Atari 2600.

ah shucks

confronted with my own mortality once again

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I still have my Coleco Vision, 2600, 5200, 7800, NES, SNES, 64, and Sega Master System.

Aside from holding on to them because they remind me of something, I don’t play them beyond turning the systems on to make sure there’s no burst electrolytic capacitors. The games mostly suck ass. Anyone who says that they’re some great call back to blah blah blah is smoking something fun.
