On this day in 1898, the Battle of Virden began when armed members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMW) surrounded a train full of strikebreakers and exchanged fire with company guards. 13 people were killed, dozens more wounded.

After a local chapter of the UMW began striking at a mine in Virden, Illinois, the Chicago-Virden Coal Company hired black strikebreakers from Birmingham, Alabama and shipped them to Virden by train.

The company hired armed detectives or security guards to accompany the strikebreakers, and an armed conflict broke out when armed miners surrounded the train as it arrived in town. A total of four detectives and seven striking mine workers were killed, with five guards, thirty miners, and an unrecorded number of strikebreakers wounded.

After this incident, Illinois Governor John Tanner ordered the National Guard to prevent any more strikebreakers from coming into the state by force. The next month, the Chicago-Virden Coal Company relented and allowed the unionization of its workers.

"When the last call comes for me to take my final rest, will the miners see that I get a resting place in the same clay that shelters the miners who gave up their lives on the hills of Virden, Illinois...They are responsible for Illinois being the best organized labor state in America."

I'm really glad social media wasn't a thing until I was 16 or so. MySpace was around but no one is looking back at their MySpace profile if it even exists now. I can say based on Facebook that a lot of what gen z makes fun of millenials for bothered me as a 16 year old in 2007 as well and the rest I was absolutely guilty of.

Nobody should be judged by who they were when 13.

13 year old me was 100% queerphobic, as white supremacist as you can get without wanting to actively exterminate all POC, incel, evangelical Christian supremacist (I thought Catholics were going to hell).

I was listening to an old Citations Needed episode about thought terminating enemy epithets and heard that the term "hand-picked successor" started being used to refer to Maduro since he was Chavez's vice president. Now I'm going to start referring to K-dolf Hitler as Genocide Joe's handpicked successor.

What is the point of consooming news these days? Why waste time being an informed public citizen. All there is is wall to wall ongoing genocide in which you can't do anything, and horserace electoralism where your vote does not matter. What is the fucking point.

self conscious that i came off unserious on my PSL call deeper-sadness like idk they wanted me to have more organizing experience or to ask more questions or have a firmer grounding in theory or ideas about praxis or something. they did give me a resource for a way to start getting involved soon though, maybe it's in my head. sometimes worry my sensitive/anxious temperament would just make me a liability in an organizing context too though deeper-sadness

Talking with my girlfriend about being a communist (mostly working back to how i got there) and making the breakthrough that the biggest problem is making sense of some ideas in a way liberals dont think about is essentially Plato’s Cave.

Being a leftist is Plato’s Cave all the way down.

My org has nominated me for leader of the Nationalists Caucus. It’s a more β€œrough” group of people who are leftist but come from a pretty hard background. Many of them dropping out of high school or lower to help their families. They then become swayed by leftism through left-nationalism.

It’s the biggest caucus of the org and I’m honestly flattered about the nomination. Whether or not I get the position is another story.

Watching Generation Kill cause I needed some mindless slop to lift to at home and man.

Besides everything else that's been said about this fucking show, I'm pretty sure there's not a single shot of any non-American shooting a rifle properly.

All competent enemy fire is either off screen or from a vehicle, but the second they are on camera, they are doing the squat and shooting over their heads.

Like literally just racist to the most basic elements of the show, the incidental battle footage is filled with incompetent less than humans getting mowed down without a real fight.

I think it's because nothing good ever comes from telecommunications. It's either your boss, bill collectors, scams, or a relative you don't like. We're all of us already frayed to the point of snapping so the sudden unexpected noise and spike of fear that you're about to be told to come in on your day off provokes a constant vigilance and preparation to flee, and after twenty years of economic failure and alienation no one retains a desire to communicate by such means.

Crushposting:

We met briefly today, they poked me in the back and apologized for not responding, and I said I know what it’s like and that’s just how it is sometimes, and then we made some light chitchat. So they’re alive and appeared happy to see me. Who could have predicted this!?
