I fucking love MST3K. It's one of the few things I can revisit from my youth and it's not full of problematic jokes.

It's one of the few things I can revisit from my youth and it's not full of problematic jokes.

There's a few dated jokes that veer close to transphobia or even old fashioned homophobia (Delta Knights "a fine name... if you're gay" comes to mind), but I acknowledge those flawed moments and can still enjoy the rest.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

Yeah there's bound to be some occasional stuff that hasn't aged well but luckily those kind of jokes weren't a backbone of most of the humor. And even those indiscretions don't have the kind of cruelty to them that turn my stomach.

MST3K was so impactful on me growing up. That and Star Trek TNG were probably my two biggest media influences as a child. Still do my own Thanksgiving MST3K marathon every year. It slaps.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 hours ago

I remember when Adam West hosted a marathon of "MST3K turkeys." The way he said "boy, I hope you're hungry" stuck with me. sicko-wistful

Shoutout to the Gamera movies

[–] [email protected] 7 points 14 hours ago

My favorite Gamera moment was when that one lady was trying to get the kids in her house to behave.

"Now stop misbehaving or I will get very angry!"

speaking of old bad movies I am about to watch the island of doctor moreau and I am not sure if my brain can take it... wish me luck

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 hours ago

have you ever seen the documentary about the making of that movie? it's every bit as entertaining as the movie itself, maybe even more so

[–] [email protected] 5 points 15 hours ago

That movie has its moments.

Lasers, aliens, dinosaurs, DINOSAUR ALIENS

maybe unpopular but I think Mike is funnier than Joel.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 hours ago

Mike is definitely the better host, even though he's a chud.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 hours ago

They were right, he deserved everything for having those footprints on the side of his van.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

I heard Mike turned out to be a chuddy dweeb, but I agree

[–] [email protected] 5 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

Mike is maybe the least annoying conservative. he might actually practice conservatism by keeping it (the conservatism) behind closed doors and not flashing it in public.

i haven't actually looked into this further so i can't say for sure and don't want to be disappointed

i think Kevin as servo is the one saying the most cringe lines, not sure about rifftrax but older mst3k episodes have some awkward chuddy riffs from him on occasion

Joel, Bill, Frank and Trace seemed good right?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 hours ago

At least Mike denounced Doug TenNapel, the piece of shit creator of Earthworm Jim, so that's something.

Yeah but that's character-appropriate for Tom Servo, who's absolutely full of himself. He genuinely doesn't care about anyone else.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 13 hours ago

yeah but i remember like for example when they would have one of those japanese movies on and he'd say some weird shit.

Bill has been on Chapo, Frank is a ~~lib~~ turbolib

[–] [email protected] 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

frank is a turbo lib along the lines of George takei

[–] [email protected] 3 points 16 hours ago

yeah, I should have said. thank you corrected

[–] [email protected] 7 points 18 hours ago

I don't doubt it lol, I make it a point not to look into people from the 90s if I can help it

All of the shorts, especially 50s industry produced ones, are so good! The naked propaganda of it all is unbelievable as well, and rightly mocked!

One of my personal favorites is from the short-lived spinoff series Cinematic Titanic, a live episode called "Alien Factor". It's a fairly cheap budget sci-fi horror, with an ending that feels like they realized they were on their last 10 minutes of film time as they were shooting the scene.

Now I wish the MST3K/Cinematic Titanic/Rifftrax crew(s) covered "Leviathan." The movie was somewhat acceptable if a bit cheesy, until the final few minutes that are so amazingly bad that it makes the rest of the movie feel stupid in hindsight.

I've often thought that Monster a Go-Go was also a great introduction. The intro host segment, the short, the feature, it's just a fun ride start to finish. In terms of "syllables to laughs" ratio, Tom Servo's "'Oops'." is probably one of the best in the series.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

It's a later episode, but Star Crash was probably the best of the Jonah run.

spoiler#Torpedo!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 18 hours ago

That Star Crash episode was an amazing ride. I loved it. I actually really liked the Jonah run. I think any long-running show needs regular cast changes to keep things fresh, even in a comedy show with robot puppets.
